Dr. Faras removed his gloves before dictating the delivery details.
"Female infant. Six pounds, eight ounces. Time of birth, six forty-two. Placenta complete. No significant tear."
Serene sat at the desk beside the wall, recording each detail before Vera added the mother's postpartum observations.
"Congratulations. Both the mother and the baby are doing well." Joan stepped out of the delivery room carrying the infant in her arms.. Hearing the continuous prayers of relief, she headed to the nursery.
Even after settling the newborn safely in the nursery, Joan could not fully relax.. As of today's morning, the ward admitted two mothers, one of them was on her first delivery, while the second was having the second child, which we just finished with.
They were now waiting for the first mother's cervix to dilate further, which is expected to take longer on a woman's first birth.
"Would you like me to take her to the nursery, for the night? Of course we would bring her back when it's time for breastfeeding?"
Although hesitated, the exhausted mother agreed, Joan took the infant to the nursery, put her in her designated bed with the same mother's name written on her small bracelet. Finishing her work Joan headed to the dining hall to have dinner before the dining hall closed, before heading back to her dermatory, she needed to catch a few snacks so she could go through the night shift.
"How is she? Anything new?" Vera who has finally had time to pass by asked.
"No worries, both their vitals are normal" fixing the baby's blanket, Joan asked in return " How are things in your end?"
"Its will still take sometime , I came to check on you, just in case the delivery takes longer"
"No worries, I know the procedure, and I will ask for help if necessary"
"I'm reassured, I came just in case you need something, while I'm not available"
Vera conveyed her confidence in Joan, but also her standing responsibility.
The night went on with June's full moon fully displayed through the hospital's window. Until Joan heard an intermittent cry from the end of the hallway, presicly the delivery room.
"Push——Push...Come on Mrs Simpson, hold on, don't faint. Miss Scandria!"
"On it—
"Forceps" Dr Fares said calmly
Twelve hours after admission, and after more than two hours of active labour…, finally resulted in a newborn boy, Although the delivery was harder as the mother had become exhausted, and the baby's condition began to worry the staff. Thankfully, the staff were experienced, and were able to assist the situation, encouraging the mother, then finishing the operation before she fainted.
"Now we Just have to wait and see, hopefully, the hard part has passed, and there is no substantial effect on either of them" Vera prayed hopefully as she sighed in relief.
Taking a look at the wrinkled red infant, Joan found it still sleeping, thankfully, so his mother could sleep more peacefully.
Gratefully, everything went routinely well for the rest of the night, until Joan signed off her shift and headed to the dining hall.
".....yes, I will visit her today before lunch, after having a few hours of sleep"
Said Joan as she spread the butter.
"Why don't you visit her another day? maybe when you don't have a night shift"
"No need, I'm going out today anyway, it will be on my way"
A few hours later, although Joan felt listless, she forced herself to get up and change. She will freshen up with a walk down the street.
She feels too tired to do anything else right now, so she continued to walk leisurely to Lily's house, with a bouquet of flowers and some groceries she bought on the way.
