Chapter 1: Whispers of the Script

In the classroom, sunlight filtered through the half-open blinds, casting dappled shadows across the chalkboard. The teacher was droning on about a nearly forgotten ancient language—the Whispering Script.

"This script existed only in ancient texts and murals a thousand years ago," the teacher's voice was low and slow, intentionally creating an air of mystery. "Today, almost no one can read it."

At that exact moment—

A faint, bizarre whisper suddenly tickled his ear, like a call echoing across time and space. The sound wasn't clear, yet it was automatically translated into meaning within his mind. In that instant, his chest tightened.

Stunned, he turned to look at his desk-mate—Lin Mo.

Lin Mo's expression remained as calm and indifferent as ever, but his brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.

"Did you... hear that?" he whispered.

Lin Mo remained silent for a moment, his eyes flickering as if weighing whether to respond.

"I don't understand it," Lin Mo said softly. "But... I know what it means."

Those words sent a jolt through his heart. You don't understand it, but you know the meaning?

Meanwhile, the teacher continued: "These characters are long lost to time. Who among you could possibly understand them? I'm afraid no one can..."

The class fell into a heavy silence. Only the two of them remained quiet, sharing a secret they both understood.

The bell rang, and the classroom instantly erupted into chatter. As everyone packed their books, Qian Qizhang remained in his seat, his fingers tracing the wood grain of the desk, lost in thought.

Lin Mo didn't leave immediately either. He pushed up his glasses, his gaze fixed on Qian Qizhang, waiting for a word.

"Lin Mo," Qian Qizhang finally spoke, his voice barely audible. "Don't mention what just happened to anyone."

Lin Mo nodded, his expression steady: "Alright, I'll listen to you."

That blunt trust made Qian Qizhang's heart tremble slightly. Lin Mo was a renowned top student but a total blank slate when it came to social cues; he was always direct. That was exactly why he obeyed without hesitation.

However, their whispers didn't go entirely unnoticed.

"Hey, what were you two... talking about just now?"

I couldn't help but cut in, my curiosity overriding everything else. Their expressions had been strange during the lecture, and now they were acting all secretive.

Qian Qizhang startled, then flashed a somewhat helpless smile.

"Alright... it's just me."

Lin Mo tilted his head slightly, not denying it, just watching quietly.

The air grew still for a moment, as if three different worlds were being silently stitched together.

Just as the atmosphere began to solidify, the chalk writing on the blackboard suddenly trembled.

No one had touched it, but that row of ancient "Whispering Script" symbols seemed awakened by some unseen force. They twisted slightly, rearranging themselves.

A second later, the symbols formed a new sentence—

"Can you... hear me?"

The wind in the classroom died down. It was as if the entire space was holding its breath.

Qian Qizhang snapped his head up, his gaze turning razor-sharp.

Lin Mo took a shallow breath; he had expected this, yet his heart still sank.

And as for me, my heart skipped a beat—

It turned out the secret was only just beginning.
