Chapter 1 - The Last Signal

The storm arrived without warning.

At first, it was just a whisper across the horizon—a strange, electric shimmer that flickered like a dying pulse. Then the skies darkened, swallowing the stars one by one, until the entire world seemed wrapped in a suffocating silence.

Arjun had seen storms before. Living in a remote coastal research station taught him to respect nature's fury. But this… this was different.

The instruments began failing first.

"Power fluctuation," he muttered, tapping the console. The screens flickered violently, displaying strings of corrupted data before going blank. Outside, the wind howled—not like air moving, but like something alive, something searching.

Then came the signal.

A sharp, piercing tone erupted from the communication panel, cutting through the chaos. Arjun froze. No one was supposed to be transmitting—not in this region, not at this hour.

The station had been isolated for months.

Slowly, he leaned forward and activated the receiver.

"Hello?" His voice sounded small, swallowed by static.

For a moment, there was nothing. Just crackling interference.

Then—

"…help me…"

Arjun's breath caught.

The voice was faint, distorted… but unmistakably human.

"Who is this?" he asked quickly. "Identify yourself!"

A long pause followed, filled with a low, humming noise that made his skin crawl.

"…don't let it in…"

The transmission cut off.

Arjun stared at the console, his heart pounding. "Don't let what in?"

Outside, lightning tore across the sky, illuminating the ocean in brief, terrifying flashes. And for just a second—only a second—Arjun thought he saw something in the water.

Something moving.

The research station wasn't large—just a cluster of reinforced structures perched on a jagged stretch of coastline. It had been built for deep-sea signal monitoring, tracking unusual electromagnetic activity beneath the ocean floor.

For months, Arjun had recorded strange readings. Unexplained pulses. Rhythmic patterns that almost felt… intentional.

His colleagues had dismissed it as noise.

Until they stopped replying.

One by one, communication with the mainland had gone silent. No calls. No updates. Just an empty void where voices used to be.

Arjun had told himself it was a system failure.

Now, he wasn't so sure.

The signal returned at exactly midnight.

Arjun hadn't left the control room. He sat there, eyes locked on the dead screens, waiting.

And then—

BEEP.

The sound was louder this time, sharper.

He activated the receiver instantly. "Hello? I'm here! Can you hear me?"

Static crackled, louder than before. Then the voice returned, clearer now… but wrong.

"…Arjun…"

He froze.

"How do you know my name?"

The line pulsed with a low, rhythmic hum. It almost sounded like breathing.

"…it sees you…"

A cold chill ran down his spine. "Who sees me? What are you talking about?"

The lights flickered.

For a moment, the entire station plunged into darkness.

Then, as the emergency lights kicked in, the voice whispered—

"…it's already inside…"

The transmission died.

Arjun stood there, paralyzed.

Inside?

"That's impossible," he said aloud, his voice trembling. "There's no one here."

But even as he spoke, a faint sound echoed from the hallway.

A soft… dragging noise.

He turned slowly.

The corridor outside the control room stretched into darkness, illuminated only by the dim red glow of emergency lights. The sound came again—closer this time.

Something scraping against the floor.

Arjun swallowed hard. His rational mind fought to take control.

Probably just loose equipment… something fell during the storm…

But deep down, he knew better.

He grabbed a flashlight and stepped into the hallway.

"Hello?" he called out, his voice shaking. "Is someone there?"

No answer.

Only the wind… and that dragging sound.

He moved cautiously, each step echoing too loudly in the silence. The beam of his flashlight cut through the darkness, revealing empty walls, overturned chairs… nothing unusual.

Then the beam flickered.

For a split second, the light died—

—and when it returned, something stood at the end of the corridor.

Arjun gasped.

A figure.

Tall. Unmoving.

Its outline was wrong, like a shadow trying to imitate a human shape. Its limbs seemed too long, bending at unnatural angles.

"Who… who are you?" Arjun whispered.

The figure didn't respond.

It just stood there.

Watching.

Then, slowly… it tilted its head.

And smiled.

Arjun ran.

He didn't think. Didn't look back. He sprinted down the corridor, heart hammering in his chest, lungs burning as panic took over.

The control room—he needed to get back to the control room.

He slammed the door shut behind him, locking it with trembling hands. "Stay calm… stay calm…" he muttered, backing away.

The radio crackled to life.

"…you opened it…"

Arjun spun around. "What?!"

"…the signal… it's a door…"

His mind raced. "No… no, that doesn't make sense…"

"…it followed the sound…"

A loud bang echoed from the other side of the door.

Arjun flinched.

Another bang.

The metal frame groaned under the impact.

"…it wears your fear…"

The voice was fading now, breaking apart into static.

"Wait!" Arjun shouted. "Tell me how to stop it! Please!"

Silence.

Then—

"…don't listen…"

The transmission ended.

The banging stopped.

For a moment, everything was still.

Then, slowly… the door handle began to turn.

Arjun's breath caught in his throat.

"No…" he whispered, backing away.

The handle twisted… once… twice…

And then it stopped.

A long, agonizing silence followed.

Arjun waited.

Seconds passed.

Then minutes.

Nothing happened.

Finally, he exhaled shakily. "It's gone…"

A voice behind him whispered—

"Is it?"

Arjun froze.

That voice…

It was his own.

He turned slowly.

And there it was.

Standing in the corner of the room.

A perfect copy of him.

Same face. Same clothes.

Same terrified expression.

But its eyes…

Its eyes were empty.

"You shouldn't have answered," it said, smiling.

Arjun stumbled back. "You're not real…"

The thing tilted its head. "Then why are you afraid?"

The lights flickered again.

And suddenly—

There were more of them.

Reflections of Arjun, standing all around the room. Each one staring. Each one smiling.

The real Arjun screamed.

Hours later, the storm passed.

The sky cleared.

The ocean grew calm.

Rescue teams arrived at the station the next morning, responding to the sudden loss of all signals.

They found the facility abandoned.

No signs of struggle.

No bodies.

Just a single radio, still active.

Crackling softly.

"…help me…"

The voice looped endlessly.

"…don't let it in…"

One of the rescuers frowned. "Strange…"

He leaned closer to the receiver.

"Hello? This is a rescue unit. Can anyone hear me?"

The radio hissed.

Then, slowly…

"…it sees you…"

The rescuer's expression changed.

"What did you say?"

The voice whispered—

"…you opened it…"

And far out in the ocean…

Something moved.
