Chapter 13 - The Ocean Hotel

"Hubby, this place is really expensive. Let's just find something simple to eat."

As soon as they sat down in the seafood restaurant, Yao Nan whispered this.

The high-end decor and the prices on the menu made her a little uneasy.

"No can do, wifey. We were both exhausted yesterday, so we need to properly treat ourselves."

Yuan started looking through the menu.

Hearing this, Yao Nan's face turned red. She lowered her voice and said, "Then I'll use my credit card later. Just... don't tell Mom."

"Don't worry, wife. I'm not as poor as you think."

Yuan called the waiter over and started ordering.

"Hello, we'll have the sizzling marbled beef, one cheese-baked Australian lobster, and the Typhoon Shelter fried mud crab."

The prices flashed through Yao Nan's mind: Marbled beef for 168, lobster for 668, and the crab for 398...

These prices made Yao Nan's heart ache so much she almost couldn't breathe.

The waiter finished writing and asked politely, "Sir, would you like any drinks or soups to go with that?"

Yao Nan glanced at the menu.

Not a single drink was under 30 RMB, and most of the soups cost over a hundred.

She immediately interjected, "No need, just tea is fine."

Yuan quickly stopped her and said to the waiter, "Bring my wife a fish maw soup, and I'll have the morel mushroom soup. That's all for now."

The waiter had barely left when Yao Nan leaned in close, lowering her voice, "Husband, are you crazy? This meal is over a thousand, almost two thousand!"

"I know seafood is your favorite," Yuan said gently, reaching across the table to take her hand.

"Even so, we can't throw money away like this!"

Yao Nan was a thrifty woman by nature, the kind who kept the household running on a razor-thin budget.

She immediately started calculating and said, "If you're really craving it, I can buy the ingredients and cook it for you at home. It would save a lot of money."

She deliberately kept her voice very low because she knew she had to give her man face when they were outside.

It had to be said that her mother had taught her well in this regard, though, of course, this education was completely ineffective on Yao Xin.

"When the credit card bill comes next month, if Mom finds out, she'll tear me apart!"

Yao Nan was very anxious.

She earned 5000 a month, and 3000 of it she handed to her mother. Shen Ruyu called it "saving it for her," so the money Yao Nan actually had available to spend each month was very little.

"Don't worry, Wife. I haven't sunken to the point of actually eating soft rice!"

As Yuan spoke, he slid his phone across the table.

Yao Nan never had the habit of checking her husband's phone. When she picked it up and saw the withdrawal record, she froze.

"100,000... where... where did you get this money??"

Yao Nan suddenly felt very nervous. To her, this was a huge amount of money.

"Look again!"

Seeing the stock trading records, Yao Nan was a bit dumbfounded.

Yuan said cheerfully, "Wife, I'm not a lazy person either. I've always been working odd jobs and saving money. Just putting it in the bank for that measly interest isn't worth it. Actually, I've been making small investments."

"H-how come I didn't know?"

"You never asked. I thought you weren't interested!"

Yuan lied through his teeth, his face a mask of innocence, it looked like he really had the talent for this.

"During the last bull market, my stocks were almost at 200,000. But I got greedy and didn't sell, ending up losing 70%. This time, since I made a profit, I hurried up and sold first, taking the profits out to invest in other things."

Yao Nan finally let out a long sigh of relief.

Her face was full of adoration as she gently scolded, "Husband, you scared me to death. I thought you had done something bad."

"Your husband is brilliantly clever. If I really did bad things, I'd be a billionaire by now."

Yuan laughed cheerfully, boasting without the slightest bit of shame.

Yao Nan relaxed, feeling very happy.

She hugged his arm and asked softly, "Husband, since you're so capable, why don't you tell Mom and the others?

Yuan knew what she was thinking.

Even though Yao Nan was usually submissive and used to putting up with grievances, she hated seeing Yuan wronged.

A live-in son-in-law, a freeloader who eats soft rice, and a poor bastard to boot... actually, she was under a lot of pressure and it weighed heavily on her mind.

Being labeled a "live-in son-in-law" and a "freeloader" weighed heavily on her mind.

She hoped her husband could finally have some status in the family, or at least that her mother would stop picking faults all day long.

To put it bluntly, every woman has a desire for dignity and pride.

Yao Nan had it too, but her deep-seated inferiority complex usually made her too afraid to show it.
