Chapter 3 - THE MAN EVERYONE FEARS

The next morning, Ariana Cole woke up with a strange feeling sitting heavily in her chest. It wasn't fear exactly. It was curiosity… mixed with something dangerously close to excitement.

She stared at the ceiling of her bedroom, replaying the events of the previous night over and over again—the loud music, the flashing lights, and most of all, him.

Damien Knight.

Even his name sounded powerful.

She turned on her side and grabbed her phone from the nightstand. Her social media notifications were overflowing, but one message stood out immediately. It was from her best friend, Lila.

Lila:

Girl, are you alive??? Do you know who that man was last night?!

Ariana sat up quickly, her heart starting to race.

She typed back.

Ariana:

I know his name is Damien Knight. That's all. Why?

The reply came instantly.

Lila:

THAT'S NOT ALL. He's the CEO of Knight Holdings… and people say he runs half the city from the shadows. Some even call him a mafia boss.

Ariana froze.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Mafia boss?

She remembered the way the crowd had parted for him, the way security had treated him like royalty, the way his dark eyes had scanned the room as if he owned it.

Maybe Lila was right.

Maybe he did.

Ariana slowly got out of bed and walked to her window. The city stretched out before her—tall buildings, rushing cars, people chasing dreams. Somewhere out there was a man who had stepped into her life like a storm.

And somehow… she knew this wasn't the last time she would see him.

Later that afternoon, Ariana arrived at Westbridge Academy, her prestigious private school in the heart of the city. Students were gathered in groups, laughing and gossiping, but the moment she stepped through the gate, whispers began to spread.

She felt their eyes on her.

It made her uncomfortable.

As she walked down the hallway, two girls standing near the lockers leaned closer to each other.

"Isn't that the girl who was at Club Nova last night?" one of them whispered.

"That's her," the other replied. "I heard Damien Knight talked to her."

Ariana pretended not to hear, but her cheeks burned.

She hurried to her classroom and slid into her seat just as the bell rang. Her best friend Lila rushed in seconds later, breathless and wide-eyed.

"You didn't tell me everything," Lila said, dropping her bag onto the desk.

Ariana frowned. "What do you mean?"

Lila leaned closer, lowering her voice.

"My cousin works at Knight Holdings," she said. "He told me Damien Knight never talks to strangers. Never. Especially not teenage girls."

Ariana swallowed.

"Maybe he was just being polite," she said softly.

Lila shook her head.

"No," she said firmly. "Men like him aren't polite. They're dangerous."

The word hung in the air between them.

Dangerous.

Ariana tried to focus on the lesson, but her mind kept drifting back to Damien—the way his voice had sounded low and calm, the way his presence had made the entire room feel smaller.

And the way he had looked at her.

Not like she was just another girl.

But like she was something… important.

That evening, the sky turned dark earlier than usual. Heavy clouds rolled over the city, and thunder rumbled in the distance.

Ariana sat alone in the living room of her family's penthouse, flipping through a magazine while her parents attended a business dinner across town.

The apartment felt too quiet.

Too still.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed on the coffee table.

She picked it up.

Unknown number.

Her heart began to pound.

She hesitated for a moment before answering.

"Hello?" she said cautiously.

There was a brief silence on the other end.

Then a deep, familiar voice spoke.

"Good evening, Ariana."

Her breath caught.

She knew that voice instantly.

"Damien?" she whispered.

"Yes."

Her hand trembled slightly as she stood up.

"How did you get my number?" she asked.

Another pause.

"I have my ways," he replied calmly.

Ariana's pulse raced.

This was impossible.

Terrifying.

And strangely thrilling.

"What do you want?" she asked.

There was a softness in his voice when he answered.

"I want to see you."

Her heart skipped a beat.

The room suddenly felt smaller, the air heavier.

"Why?" she asked, barely above a whisper.

"Because," Damien said, "since last night, you haven't left my mind."

Silence filled the room.

Ariana didn't know what to say.

No one had ever spoken to her like that before—so direct, so confident, so intense.

Thunder cracked loudly outside, making her jump.

Damien spoke again, his voice calm but firm.

"I'm outside your building."

Her eyes widened in shock.

"What?" she gasped.

She rushed to the window and pulled the curtain aside.

Down below, parked directly in front of the entrance, was a sleek black luxury car. Rain had begun to fall, glistening on its polished surface. Several men in dark suits stood nearby, scanning the area carefully.

And leaning casually against the car door…

Was Damien Knight.

Even from the twentieth floor, she could recognize him instantly—tall, composed, powerful.

Waiting.

For her.

Her heart pounded wildly against her chest.

This was crazy.

Completely insane.

But deep inside, a voice whispered something she couldn't ignore.

Go.

"Ariana," Damien said through the phone, his tone softer now. "Come downstairs."

She hesitated.

Every warning her parents had ever given her echoed in her mind.

Stay away from dangerous men.

Stay away from trouble.

Stay away from people with power.

But curiosity was stronger than fear.

Slowly, she grabbed her jacket and headed for the door.

Minutes later, the elevator doors opened in the lobby.

Ariana stepped out, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. Her palms were sweaty, and her heart felt like it might burst out of her chest.

The security guard at the front desk looked at her nervously.

"Miss Cole," he said, "that man outside insists on seeing you."

She nodded quietly.

"I know."

She pushed open the glass doors.

Cold rain kissed her skin as she stepped outside.

Damien turned toward her immediately.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, the world seemed to stop.

The sound of rain faded.

The city lights blurred.

There was only him.

Only her.

He walked toward her slowly, his dark coat moving with the wind. His expression was unreadable, but his gaze burned with intensity.

When he finally stood in front of her, he looked down at her as if studying every detail of her face.

"You came," he said.

Ariana swallowed nervously.

"You said you wanted to see me," she replied.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"Yes," he said. "And now that you're here… everything is about to change."

Her heart skipped.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

Damien's eyes darkened slightly.

"Because," he said quietly, "you're in danger, Ariana."

The words hit her like lightning.

Fear rushed through her veins.

"Danger?" she whispered.

He nodded once.

"Someone is watching you," he said. "And they're not going to stop."

Ariana's breath caught in her throat.

"Who?" she asked.

Damien stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"My enemies."

Thunder roared across the sky.

And in that moment, Ariana realized something terrifying.

Meeting Damien Knight hadn't just changed her life.

It had pulled her into a world of secrets, power, and danger—one she might never escape.
