Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: THE FIRST FRACTURE

Morning came too quickly.

Amalos was already alive by the time Kael stepped into the research facility again. The building felt different today, not quieter, not louder, Just… aware.

Kael moved through the glass doors with her usual calm precision, her expression composed as always. To everyone around her, she was simply Dr. Kael Arden—the new researcher.

But beneath that carefully crafted identity, her senses were sharp and alert.

Humans passed by her in small groups, their voices low as they discussed experiments, data, deadlines.

None of them noticed anything unusual, none of them ever did.

Still…The air felt wrong, too still, too controlled.

Kael paused briefly in the hallway, her gaze shifting almost imperceptibly toward one of the security cameras mounted above.

 A red light blinked steadily.

 Everything looked normal.

 And yet—Her instincts said otherwise.

 "Dr. Arden."

The voice pulled her attention back.

 Kael turned.

Eryndor stood a few steps behind her, a tablet in one hand. His expression was neutral, but his eyes, those sharp observant eyes—were already studying her.

As if he had been watching her longer than she realized.

 "You're early," he said.

Kael gave a small, polite smile.

 "I prefer to be prepared."

 Eryndor nodded once.

 "That makes two of us."

A brief silence followed, not uncomfortable but not entirely natural either. There it was again, that strange, quiet tension that seemed to exist only when they stood this close.

 Eryndor broke it first.

"I'll show you around the lab," he said, turning slightly. "You'll be working closely with the main research team."

Kael fell into step beside him.

As they walked, she allowed her gaze to move subtly around the environment.

Glass walls, reinforced doors. Secured labs.

Humans loved their barriers,it almost amused her.

"This facility focuses on multiple branches of research," Eryndor explained. "But our primary work involves the biological effects of vampire interaction."

Kael tilted her head slightly. "Interaction," she repeated.

 Eryndor glanced at her briefly.

"A safer term than 'attack,'" he said.

 Kael hummed softly. "Of course."

They stepped into a larger laboratory space.

Inside, several scientists were already at work. Screens displayed complex data. Equipment hummed quietly. A controlled, focused environment. Eryndor gestured toward the room. "This is where most of the analysis happens."

Kael stepped inside, the moment she crossed the threshold—She felt it, Faint but unmistakable.

Her eyes flickered for the briefest second. Blood. Not fresh but present. Contained and Studied.

Her gaze landed on a sealed container across the room. Dark liquid vampire blood.

So this was where humans tried to understand them.

 A dangerous game.

"You'll have access to most sections," Eryndor continued. "But some areas are restricted until further clearance."

Kael nodded. "I expected as much.

"Eryndor watched her carefully and there the feeling again like something didn't quite align.

"You're very calm," he said suddenly.

Kael turned her gaze at him.

 "Should I be nervous?"

 "Most new researchers are."

She held his gaze steadily. "I'm not most researchers."

For a moment, neither of them looked away.

Then—A loud metallic clatter echoed from across the lab. Both of them turned instantly.

One of the scientists had dropped a tray of instruments.

"Sorry!" the man called out quickly, kneeling to pick them up.

Eryndor exhaled lightly. "Careful," he said. "Those aren't easy to replace."

The tension broke slightly but not completely.

Kael's gaze lingered on the room a second longer than necessary. Her instincts hadn't reacted to the noise, they had reacted before it to something else.

Later that afternoon, the lab had settled into a steady rhythm.

Data analysis. Quiet discussions. The low hum of machines.

Kael sat at one of the workstations, reviewing files on the system.

To anyone watching, she looked completely absorbed in her work and she was. Just not in the way they believed. Every piece of information she accessed, she memorized patterns, weaknesses and Progress.

Humans had come further than expected. Closer to understanding vampire biology than they should have been, that alone made this mission critical. But her thoughts drifted—Unwanted to the memory from the night before, to 1890,to him.

Timon. The name surfaced quietly in her mind, her fingers paused briefly over the screen. His voice, his warning.

 "They're organizing.

Her jaw tightened slightly. Was that when it had begun.? Or had they all simply been too blind to see it?

"Lost in thought?" Eryndor's voice came from behind her.

Kael didn't startle. "Just reviewing the data," she replied smoothly, turning slightly in her chair.

Eryndor stepped closer, glancing at the screen.

 "You're adapting quickly."

 "I told you I would."Kael smiled.

That same unsettling feeling creeping back in.

"You don't ask many questions," he said.

 Kael raised a brow slightly.

 "Is that a problem?"

"Most people are curious." Eryndor smiled back at her.

She leaned back slightly. "Maybe I prefer observation."

 "Observation can be dangerous."he replied

A faint smile touched her lips.

"Only for those who don't understand what they're seeing."

Their eyes met again and for a moment,The rest of the lab seemed to fade into the background.

Eryndor felt it clearly this time, that pull, strange and unexplainable and yet real.

He stepped back first as if breaking something before it could fully form.

"You'll be assisting with sample analysis tomorrow," he said, his tone returning to professional.

Kael nodded. "I look forward to it."

But as he turned to leave— He hesitated just slightly, then walked away.

The evening came slowly. One by one, the lab began to empty, lights dimmed in certain sections. Conversations faded, but not everything rested.

Kael remained, standing near one of the observation windows, looking out into the darkening city.

Her reflection stared back at her once more unchanging and unreadable. But her mind… Was not as still.

 "Timon's voice echoed faintly again.

 "If something changes…

Her eyes narrowed slightly. Alot had changed, she could feel it now more than ever. Not just in the city not just in the lab but around Eryndor.

That strange disconnect the way her presence didn't affect him the way it should, something in him resisted her nature. It wasn't normal,it wasn't natural and it wasn't random.

Behind her, a faint sound broke the silence.

A door closing. Kael didn't turn.

"You're still here," she said calmly.

Eryndor's reflection appeared beside hers in the glass.

"So are you." A pause. The city lights flickered below them.

"Do you ever feel it?" he asked suddenly.

Kael's gaze shifted slightly. "Feel what?"

He frowned faintly. "The balance had shifted."

Her expression didn't change. But her answer came carefully.

 "Define 'shifted.'"

Eryndor let out a quiet breath.

"I don't know," he admitted. "Lately it just feels like whatever was coming, it wasn't small."

Kael finally turned to look at him fully. Her eyes met his. Sharp, ancient Measuring, and for the first time there was the faintest hint of something real beneath her calm. Not fear but awareness.

"You might be right," she said softly.

Eryndor held her gaze. "About what?"

A small pause, then Kael looked away, back to the city.

 "About something changing.

Silence settled between them again and he didn't push further.

But the feeling stayed stronger now. And as night fully claimed the city of Amalos—Neither of them realized…

that somewhere in the darkness beyond the lab

something had already begun moving watching and waiting .

And when it did, Amalos wouldn't see it coming.
