Chapter 36 - Episode 16:The One chosen to Disappear...

Darkness.

Complete.

Absolute.

Even the sound of breathing—

felt distant.

Like reality itself had been muted.

"Selection process initiated."

That voice—

still echoing.

Cold.

Unfeeling.

Final.

I couldn't see Riya.

But I could feel her hand—

still holding mine.

Tight.

Desperate.

"Don't let go…" she whispered.

Her voice trembling.

"I'm right here," I said quickly.

Even though—

I wasn't sure how long that would remain true.

A faint light appeared.

Not around us—

but beneath us.

Symbols.

Strange.

Glowing.

Forming a circle.

The moment I looked at it—

something inside me understood.

This wasn't random.

This was a decision space.

A place where the system chooses.

"Two connected entities detected."

The voice returned.

Closer now.

Inside my head.

"Only one may continue."

Riya's grip tightened.

"No…" she whispered.

"No, we can't let it decide."

"I won't," I said instantly.

But the truth?

I had no idea how to stop it.

The light split.

Two paths.

Two circles.

One beneath me.

One beneath her.

"Step forward."

"What happens if we don't?" Riya asked.

Silence.

Then—

"Both will be erased."

My heart dropped.

So that was the trap.

No escape.

Only choice.

"I'll do it," I said immediately.

Stepping slightly ahead.

"No!" Riya pulled me back.

"You're not leaving me!"

"I'm not leaving you," I said softly.

"But I'm not letting you disappear either."

Tears filled her eyes.

"You don't get to decide that!"

Neither did she.

But someone had to.

The shadow appeared again.

Standing just outside the light.

Watching.

"This is where it always ends," it said quietly.

"Then change it!" I snapped.

"You said I escaped once!"

It looked at me.

Long.

Deep.

"You didn't escape," it said.

"You replaced."

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

"What…?" I whispered.

"Every cycle," it continued.

"One version survives…"

"…by taking the place of another."

My blood ran cold.

"So even if I choose…" I said slowly—

"…I'm just continuing the system?"

It nodded.

That's when I realized.

This wasn't a choice.

It was a loop disguised as one.

"Decision time exceeded."

The system voice interrupted.

"Automatic selection will begin."

"No!" Riya shouted.

The light beneath her started glowing brighter.

"Riya…" I stepped toward her.

"Don't," she said.

Smiling through tears.

A broken smile.

"If one of us has to go…"

her voice shook—

"…I'd rather it be me."

"No."

I grabbed her hand again.

Tighter.

Stronger.

"If this system wants one of us…"

I said slowly—

"…then it can't have either."

The shadow's eyes widened.

For the first time—

genuine shock.

"That's not possible," it said.

"Watch me."

I stepped forward—

pulling Riya with me.

Out of the circles.

Out of the system's defined paths.

The moment we crossed the boundary—

everything glitched.

The light shattered.

The symbols broke apart.

"Error."

The voice distorted.

"Invalid action."

"System destabilizing."

The ground beneath us trembled.

Riya held onto me.

Fear mixed with something else now—

hope.

"Keep going!" she shouted.

We ran.

Not knowing where.

Not knowing how.

Just—

away.

Behind us—

something screamed.

Not human.

Not mechanical.

Something…

angry.

And then—

everything stopped.

Silence.

We were back.

In the room.

Lights normal.

Walls intact.

Reality—

restored.

But something had changed.

The shadow stood in front of us.

Closer than ever before.

"You did it…" it whispered.

Not shocked anymore.

Not regretful.

Relieved.

"You broke the selection."

I shook my head slowly.

"No…"

Because deep down—

I could feel it.

Something wasn't over.

It had just begun.

⚡ FINAL LINE:

"You didn't escape the system…"

"…you forced it to notice you."
