Chapter 1 - The First Glance

The cold air of Darjeeling brushed softly against Harsh's face as he stepped out of the taxi, his small suitcase in hand and a quiet nervousness sitting deep in his chest. The hills were wrapped in mist, like a dream he wasn't sure he belonged in.

This was a new beginning.

After completing his 10th standard, Harsh had come here for further studies. A new place, new people… everything new.

And that scared him.

Harsh wasn't the kind of person who easily blended in. He wasn't the smartest, not the strongest, and definitely not the most handsome. Just… average. But what made him different was something no one could see at first glance—his heart. He loved deeply. His parents, his grandparents… they were his whole world.

And now, for the first time, he was far away from them.

"Stay calm… it's just school," he whispered to himself.

The classroom buzzed with chatter when Harsh entered. Students were laughing, talking in groups, already comfortable like they had known each other forever.

Harsh tightened his grip on his bag.

I don't belong here…

"New student?" the teacher asked, looking at him.

"Yes, ma'am…"

"Come, introduce yourself."

His heartbeat quickened as he walked to the front. Every eye in the class turned toward him. He swallowed nervously.

"My name is Harsh… I came from… uh… Siliguri… I like… reading sometimes…"

His voice faded. A few students nodded casually, some didn't care at all.

And then—

It happened.

His eyes, almost by accident, shifted toward the last row near the window.

And he saw her.

Time slowed.

She sat quietly, her hair gently falling across her face, her eyes calm yet distant. There was something about her… something he couldn't explain.

Harsh felt his breath hitch.

Who… is she…?

In that single moment, something inside him changed.

He didn't know her name. Didn't know where she was from.

But he knew one thing.

He had fallen for her.

The girl, Indu, watched him too.

Just for a second.

But that second was enough.

Why… is my heart beating like this? she thought, quickly looking away and pretending to be uninterested.

Her face showed no emotion. No curiosity. Nothing.

But inside… it was chaos.

He looks so simple… but… why do I feel this way?

She had always been calm, focused, one of the top students. Popular. Admired.

But this feeling?

It was new.

And she didn't like how it made her lose control.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

Harsh never gathered the courage to talk to her.

He would sit quietly, stealing glances whenever he could. Watching her laugh with friends, answer questions confidently, exist so effortlessly in a world where he struggled.

She's too good… he thought. Why would she ever talk to someone like me?

And Indu?

She noticed everything.

Every glance.

Every moment he looked away when she caught him staring.

She wanted to talk to him.

Many times.

But something stopped her.

Maybe pride.

Maybe fear.

Or maybe… she wanted him to come first.

One month passed like this.

Silence.

Distance.

Unspoken feelings growing stronger each day.

That evening, the sky turned dark unexpectedly.

Heavy rain poured over Darjeeling, the streets quickly flooding as people rushed for shelter.

Indu stood near the bus stop, holding her bag close. Her umbrella had broken earlier, and now she was stuck.

"No buses…" someone muttered nearby.

She sighed softly.

Great…

The rain only grew heavier.

And then—

A shadow appeared beside her.

She looked up.

Harsh stood there, slightly nervous, holding an umbrella over both of them.

"Uh… you can stand here… if you want," he said, his voice soft, almost lost in the sound of rain.

Indu blinked.

For a moment, she didn't say anything.

Then, slowly, she stepped closer under the umbrella.

"Thank you…" she said quietly.

Harsh's heart started racing.

She talked to me…

"I'm Harsh… by the way," he added, trying not to sound awkward.

"I know," she replied.

A small pause.

"And… I'm Indu."

Her name.

Finally.

Harsh smiled slightly.

"Nice name…"

Indu looked at him, just for a second.

And this time—

She didn't hide her smile.

The rain continued to fall.

But for both of them, something else had just begun.

Something neither of them fully understood yet.

A connection.

A story.

A love…

That would change their lives forever.
