Chapter 4 - You Don’t Get to Walk Away

"Take your hands off her."

The voice came out of nowhere.

Sharp.

Cold.

And filled with something that instantly changed the air.

Clara froze.

Because she hadn't even realized how close she still was to him.

How her body hadn't moved.

How she hadn't stepped back.

But now—

someone else had noticed.

She turned.

A man stood at the door.

Tall. Confident. Angry.

His jaw tight.

His eyes locked directly on the CEO.

And suddenly—

everything felt exposed.

"Who is this?" the man asked, his tone hard.

But it wasn't a question.

It was a challenge.

Clara's heart began to race again.

Not like before.

Not slow.

Not heated.

This time—

fast.

Uneasy.

Because something in his voice told her…

this wasn't just concern.

It was personal.

The CEO didn't respond immediately.

Of course he didn't.

He simply straightened.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Too calm.

Then—

he stepped slightly in front of Clara.

Not touching her.

But positioning himself just enough…

to block the other man's view.

Possessive.

"She works here."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

A pause.

"For me."

Something shifted.

Hard.

Visible.

The man at the door clenched his fists.

"You didn't tell me you hired someone."

The CEO tilted his head slightly.

Almost amused.

"I don't recall needing your permission."

Silence.

Heavy.

Clara looked between them.

Her chest tightening.

Because now—

she understood.

This wasn't just tension.

This was power.

And she was right in the middle of it.

The man took a step forward.

Closer.

Too close.

"You always do this."

His voice dropped.

Dark.

"You take what you want."

Clara felt it.

That sentence.

The weight of it.

Because somehow…

it didn't feel like it was just about business.

Her gaze shifted back to the CEO.

And for the first time—

she saw something different.

Not calm.

Not distant.

Something sharper.

More dangerous.

"Careful."

The CEO said quietly.

But it wasn't a warning.

It was a promise.

The tension snapped.

"Stay out of this," the other man shot back.

His eyes flickering briefly toward Clara.

And that was enough.

Enough for the CEO to notice.

Enough for something to change.

In an instant—

he moved.

Fast.

Precise.

Closing the distance between them.

"Don't look at her like that."

The words were low.

Deadly.

Clara's breath caught.

Because that—

wasn't professional.

That wasn't normal.

That was something else entirely.

And suddenly…

she understood something she hadn't before.

This wasn't just control.

This was obsession.

"You don't own her," the man snapped.

A pause.

And then—

the CEO smiled.

Slow.

Cold.

Certain.

"No."

He turned slightly.

Just enough for his eyes to find Clara again.

"But she's here, isn't she?"

Silence.

The question hung in the air.

Because it wasn't directed at the other man.

It was directed at her.

And somehow—

that made it worse.

Clara's heart pounded violently.

Her thoughts tangled.

Because she knew…

this was the moment.

The moment where she could step back.

Speak.

End it.

Walk away.

And yet—

she didn't.

She couldn't.

Because something inside her…

refused.

And he saw it.

Of course he did.

That same quiet satisfaction returned to his expression.

"There it is," he murmured.

The other man's patience snapped.

"This is a mistake," he said directly to Clara now.

"Whatever he's pulling you into—"

"Enough."

One word.

And everything stopped.

The CEO didn't raise his voice.

Didn't need to.

But the room obeyed.

Even her.

Even her.

That realization hit harder than anything else.

Because she hadn't meant to listen.

But she did.

Without thinking.

Without resisting.

And that terrified her.

More than either of them.

The CEO turned to her fully now.

Ignoring the other man completely.

"Look at me."

And she did.

Instantly.

No hesitation.

No control.

Just… response.

His gaze softened.

Just slightly.

But it wasn't kindness.

It was focus.

Precision.

"You're staying."

Not a question.

A statement.

A decision already made.

For her.

And for a second—

she almost nodded.

Almost.

Until—

"I wouldn't."

The other man's voice cut in again.

Lower now.

More controlled.

But there was something else there.

Something that made her stomach tighten.

"If you stay…"

He looked directly at her.

"…you won't be able to leave when you want to."

Silence.

That sentence landed deep.

Because part of her…

already knew it was true.

Her eyes slowly returned to the CEO.

Waiting.

For denial.

For explanation.

For anything.

But he didn't deny it.

He didn't explain.

He just watched her.

Calm.

Certain.

Like he already knew…

what she was going to choose.

And that—

was the most dangerous part of all.

Clara's lips parted slightly.

Her pulse racing.

Because now…

it wasn't about them.

It was about her.

Her choice.

Her control.

Or the illusion of it.

And deep down…

she felt it.

That pull again.

Stronger than ever.

Not fear.

Not logic.

Something else.

Something darker.

Something that whispered—

Stay.

And before she could stop herself…

She did.

"I'm not leaving."

The words left her mouth quietly.

But they echoed.

And the moment they did—

everything changed.

The other man stepped back.

Disbelief written across his face.

The CEO didn't react immediately.

But that small…

almost imperceptible smile returned.

Victory.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But absolute.

And Clara felt it.

The shift.

The weight.

The consequence.

Because now—

there was no pretending.

She hadn't been pulled in.

She had chosen it.

And that made it worse.

Much worse.

Because now…

whatever happened next—

wasn't just on him.

It was on her too.

And somehow…

that made her want it even more.
