Unknown Footsteps

Unknown Footsteps

It was almost midnight. It was raining heavily outside. Ayan was sitting at his study table, making last-minute preparations for tomorrow's exam. Suddenly, there was a sound downstairs—as if something heavy had fallen on the glass.

Ayan stopped. He was home alone today. His parents had gone to a relative's house in a neighboring town. He thought the window panes might have been blown open by the wind. Gathering his courage, he went downstairs with a torch in his hand.

As he walked into the living room, his heart pounded. The window panes hadn't broken, but his father's expensive vase was lying shattered on the floor. Ayan shone the torch light around. Suddenly, he felt a shadow move behind the sofa.

"Who? Who's there?" Ayan shouted in a trembling voice.

There was no answer. Only the sound of rain and the ticking of the clock. Ayan slowly started walking towards the sofa. Just then, a message came on his mobile. He took out his phone from his pocket and read his mother's message.

The message was: "Ayan, get out of the house now! We saw on the CCTV camera a man enter through the back door. He is still hiding behind the sofa in the drawing room! We have called the police."

The phone was almost falling from Ayan's hand. He felt someone standing right behind him and hot breath on his neck. Ayan did not dare to turn back. At that moment, the house's calling bell rang loudly and the siren of a police car could be heard outside.

The shadow behind him jumped out of the window in an instant and merged into the darkness. Ayan sat down on the floor with a thud. He realized that if he had been a few seconds late today, his life could have been different.
