Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Thing That Waits

The fracture did not close.

It remained exactly as they left it—half-sealed, half-open, like a door that had been stopped mid-motion.

Waiting.

Not struggling.

Not forcing its way through.

Just… waiting.

No one moved for a while.

Even the wind seemed hesitant to return.

Jeanne stood a few steps behind Damon, her eyes fixed on the crack in the ground like it might suddenly lunge forward again.

"…it stopped," she said quietly.

Selene shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"It changed."

Damon didn't speak.

His gaze was still on his hand.

The same hand he had reached into the fracture with.

There was no mark.

No visible difference.

But he could feel it.

Something faint.

Not inside him—

Connected to him.

The prince stepped closer to the fracture again, more cautious this time.

His golden light remained controlled, but it didn't push forward like before.

It hovered.

Testing.

"…it's stable," he said.

Selene gave a faint, humorless smile.

"For now."

Jeanne exhaled slowly.

"I don't understand this."

She looked at Damon.

"You touched it. It didn't attack you. It didn't break through. It just… stopped."

Damon finally lowered his hand.

"…it wasn't trying to attack."

That made her frown.

"Then what was it doing?"

Damon hesitated.

Not because he didn't want to answer.

But because the answer didn't sound right.

"…it was trying to connect."

Silence followed that.

Selene watched him carefully.

"…and you let it."

Damon met her gaze.

"I didn't have a choice."

Selene tilted her head slightly.

"There's always a choice."

Damon didn't respond.

Because this time—

he wasn't sure that was true.

The ground gave a faint pulse again.

But this time—

it didn't feel like pressure.

It felt like recognition.

Jeanne stepped back instinctively.

"…I don't like that."

The prince straightened.

"Neither do I."

He turned slightly, looking out across the trees surrounding them.

"…this isn't just a fracture point."

Jeanne blinked.

"What do you mean?"

He looked back at the ground.

"It's reacting differently than the chamber did."

Selene nodded.

"Because this one isn't as contained."

That didn't help.

Damon crouched slightly near the edge of the fracture.

Not touching it this time.

Just observing.

"…it's not trying to open anymore."

Selene stepped closer.

"No."

Jeanne crossed her arms tightly.

"Then what is it doing?"

Damon answered quietly.

"…waiting for something."

The prince's gaze sharpened.

"For what?"

Damon didn't answer immediately.

Because the answer was already forming.

And he didn't like it.

"…for me."

Jeanne let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"…that's not good."

Selene didn't disagree.

"No. It isn't."

Another faint ripple moved through the fracture.

Soft.

Controlled.

Not violent.

The prince stepped back this time.

"…then we don't give it what it wants."

Damon stood.

"And how do you plan to do that?"

The prince didn't hesitate.

"We destroy it."

Selene's expression shifted—just slightly.

"That won't work."

The prince looked at her.

"And you know this how?"

Selene met his gaze evenly.

"Because if it could be destroyed that easily… it wouldn't have needed to be sealed across the world."

That landed.

Jeanne ran a hand through her hair.

"So we can't destroy it. We can't leave it. And it's waiting for Damon."

She looked between them.

"…those are terrible options."

Damon gave a faint smirk.

"Yeah. I noticed."

The prince stepped forward again, this time not toward the fracture—but toward Damon.

"…then we change the approach."

Damon raised an eyebrow.

"I'm listening."

The prince's voice remained calm.

"We don't let it act first."

A pause.

"We find the next fracture before it does."

Selene smiled faintly.

"That's ambitious."

The prince didn't react.

"It's necessary."

Jeanne frowned slightly.

"…how do we even find the next one?"

All eyes turned—

to Damon.

He sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't say that."

Selene's smile widened slightly.

"You're the only one it responds to like this."

Jeanne crossed her arms.

"Lucky you."

Damon looked back at the fracture one last time.

It pulsed again.

Soft.

Patient.

Waiting.

"…fine," he said.

"I'll find it."

The prince nodded once.

"Good."

Selene stepped back, already turning slightly toward the trees.

"Then we should move."

Jeanne hesitated.

Then followed.

Because staying felt worse.

Damon lingered for half a second longer.

Just enough to feel it again.

That connection.

Faint.

But real.

Then he turned away.

Behind them—

the fracture remained.

Half-open.

Unbroken.

And beneath it—

something waited.

Not trying to escape.

Not trying to fight.

Learning.
