Waylinn moved swiftly through the dense forest. His mind was filled with a mixture of determination and dread. In his mouth, he carefully held the basilisks, a small creature he needed for feeding Heka.
The path to the grottverna, a hidden cavern deep within the ancient woods, was familiar to him. Yet this time it felt different. A shadow of unease crept over him as he approached.
From a distance, the entrance to the grottverna came into view. It was framed by jagged rocks and thick trees. But something was off. The vibe around the cavern shimmered faintly. A subtle but unmistakable sign that the protective barrier had changed.
Waylinn's instincts screamed at him. This was not the barrier he had created before. Someone else had been here. Someone had breached the sanctity of the grottverna before him.
His pace quickened, feet pounding against the earth as panic began to rise within him. What if Heka was in danger? What if the intruder had harmed him or worse? The thought twisted his mind into knots.
He reached the entrance. His hand trembled as he touched the cold, rough surface of the flowstone that sealed the cavern.
The barrier was unlike anything he had encountered before. It was stronger, more complex, layered with enchantment that was foreign to him. He whispered his name, barely audible. "Heka..."
The word was a plea. A hope that he was safe beyond the enchanted wall.
Summoning every ounce of his will, Waylinn pressed his palm against the barrier and uttered the incantation. "Paraviazo…"
The spell, meant to shatter enchantment defenses, met resistance. The barrier held firm, unyielding.
He tried again. His voice was boosted with urgency. "Paraviazo!"
Time seemed to stretch as he repeated the spell over and over. However, the word became a desperate chant. "Paraviazo... paraviazo... paraviazo..."
His mind grew ragged, but he refused to relent. Each attempt chipped away at the enchantment barried. The vibe thickened with the strain of his efforts.
Finally, with a sharp crack that echoed through the cavern mouth, the barrier shattered. The flowstone shimmered and dissolved, revealing the dark interior of the grottverna. Waylinn stepped inside. His eyes scanned the shadows for any sign of Heka. His heart still raced, but now it was fueled by a fragile hope.
What awaited him inside was unknown. But one thing was certain. He would face whatever it was.
Waylinn burst into the room with a sudden rush. His mind pounded fiercely against his ribs. Without hesitation, he dashed toward the basilisks lying motionless on the ground.
A low groan escaped his lips, a mixture of frustration and relief. His sharp eyes darted around the dimly lit cave. He scanned every shadow, every corner. He sought the one who might be lurking, someone suspicious, someone dangerous.
In his urgency, Waylinn barely registered Heka's presence. The old friend's quiet figure was almost invisible to him, overshadowed by the storm of his own fears and instincts.
Unconsciously, Waylinn's demeanor shifted his tense posture and the wildness in his gaze. Something primal and fierce that even he did not realize was terrifying.
Heka, startled by Waylinn's sudden and intense arrival. He froze in place. The man barely recognized the figure before him.
The familiar face was twisted by desperation and hunger, as if Waylinn had transformed into a wild beast driven by some insatiable need. The fear in Heka's eyes deepened. His breath caught in his throat.
Slowly, trembling, Heka reached for the flowstone beside him. With shaking hands, he pulled it up. He wrapped it around himself like a fragile shield against the unknown threat. His body curled inward. He sought protection from the man who once was a friend but now seemed a predator, a hungry beast.
Waylinn's gaze softened as he finally noticed Heka's trembling form. After he found nothing suspicious, he took a cautious step forward. His voice was gentle but firm. "Heka, don't be afraid, it's safe now."
But Heka remained silent, his eyes wide and unblinking, still hidden beneath the protective cover of the flowstone. The silent vibe between them stretched, thick with unspoken fears and confusion.
"Heka…." Waylinn's voice dropped to a whisper. As he reached out, carefully pulled the flowstone away to reveal the man's pale, frightened face.
Suddenly, Heka's fear erupted into a scream, sharp and desperate. His voice cracked with terror. "Arrgghh!"
Waylinn recoiled slightly. His eyes furrowed in confusion. "Heka... why are you still afraid?"
"Don't get closer!!! Don't kill me, please…" Heka's voice trembled. His hands raised in a pleading gesture. His eyes sought Waylinn's for any sign of mercy.
The cave seemed to hold its breath as the two men faced each other. One haunted by unseen dangers. The other haunted by the fear of a friend turned into a stranger.
The fragile thread of trust between them strained under the weight of silence and suspicion.
Waylinn waited for a spark to either ignite hope or shatter what little remained. His mind raced as he realized the root of Heka's fear. This was the first time he had revealed his original form to his old friend.
Over the years, Heka had only ever seen him in his half-human guise. A figure familiar enough to trust, yet distant enough to mask the full truth. Now, standing before him in his true, unmasked shape. Hence Waylinn understood why Heka's heart had seized with terror.
"Heka…it's me Waylinn." Waylinn said softly. His voice was steady but filled with a gentle urgency. He tried to break through the wall of fear.
"Waylinn…" The name slipped from Heka's lips like a fragile whisper, barely audible.
"Yeah, it's me Waylinn." Waylinn repeated. He stepped closer, his eyes sought any sign of recognition.
But Heka remained hidden, his body curled behind the flowstone as if it were the only barrier between him and an ordeal. From his small vantage point, he peered cautiously. His wide eyes locked onto the beast that claimed to be Waylinn.
The sight was almost impossible to reconcile. How could this terrifying creature be the friend he once knew? It felt like a cruel trick, a trap laid by some malevolent force.
