Chapter 4 - 4. Acid Rain World

When Wei Yuexin arrived at the hospital, the caregiver was wiping her grandmother's face.

The old man lay quietly on the bed with his eyes closed. His hair had been shaved off due to brain surgery, and he wore a net bag on his head and had an oxygen tube in his nose. He looked much older than before the accident.

Wei Yuexin felt a lump in her throat as she looked at her, and cautiously called out, "Grandma."

The elderly man did not react.

She asked the caregiver, "Has my grandma still not woken up?"

The caregiver shook her head. "No."

Wei Yuexin felt a heavy weight in her heart; her grandmother had been in a coma for half a month.

That day, she was at work when she suddenly received a call from a neighbor saying that her grandmother had fallen from the building. The neighbors worked together to take her grandmother to the hospital, and when she arrived, her grandmother was already in the operating room.

She sat outside waiting blankly for the surgery, which lasted more than ten hours.

I don't know who came and went, or who explained all the risks of the surgery to her, made her sign so many names, and made her go to this place and that place to pay fees.

She felt like a puppet, as if her entire soul had ascended into the sky.

Fortunately, the surgery was relatively successful. After her surgery, my grandmother was transferred to the ICU, where she stayed for a week until she stabilized, and then she was transferred to a regular ward.

Everything is moving in a positive direction, except that Grandma is still unconscious.

"The patient is recovering quite well, and the brain CT scan results are also good, but we really can't explain why she is still unconscious. It may be a self-protective mechanism of the brain. Was the patient emotionally agitated or sad before the incident?" the doctor told her.

But no one knows what happened before Grandma's accident.

"Xinxin, are you there?"

Wei Yuexin turned her head and saw Grandma Xu and her daughter from next door.

She quickly stood up and said, "Grandma Xu, Aunt Xu."

Grandma Xu placed the fruit basket she was carrying on the bedside table. "We've come to see your maternal grandmother. She's still not awake. Oh dear, she's really suffering!"

Wei Yuexin shook her head. "Grandma Xu, do you really not know what happened the day my maternal grandmother had the accident?"

Grandma Xu said, "No one was around at the time. We just heard a loud thud. When we went to check, your grandma was lying on the ground, and there was blood everywhere."

Aunt Xu moved her lips as if she wanted to say something, but Grandma Xu quickly turned her back on her words.

Wei Yuexin noticed this and hurriedly asked, "Grandma Xu, Aunt Xu, do you know anything? If you do, please tell me. The doctor said that my grandmother hasn't woken up yet, which may be related to what happened before her accident."

Grandma Xu said awkwardly, "Oh, I see. Actually, we didn't want to hide this from you, but we just didn't know how to tell you. The day your maternal grandmother had her accident, someone saw your mother."

Wei Yuexin was startled.

Aunt Xu said, "Mom, what are you still hiding?"

She told Wei Yuexin, "That day, someone heard your mother and your maternal grandmother arguing. It must have been quite a heated argument. Your mother said that your maternal grandmother was a kidnapper who abducted her from her home. Now that she has been recognized by her ancestors, her family is going to sue your maternal grandmother. When your mother left, it seems she was in a luxury car. Then, not long after, your maternal grandmother fell from the building."

Wei Yuexin was completely shocked. "Is...it really like that?"

Grandma Xu glared at her daughter. "Does anyone talk like that?"

She comforted him, saying, "These are just rumors passed around. No one saw or heard them with their own eyes or ears. No one was home at the time. We heard it from others later. They were worried that we outsiders wouldn't understand anything and would just tell you nonsense, ruining your relationship as mother and daughter."

Wei Yuexin nodded haphazardly. "I know, thank you for telling me."

Grandma Xu felt she couldn't stay any longer, so she took her daughter and left.

Wei Yuexin sat by her grandmother's bedside, her mind a little confused.

She knew from a young age that her mother and maternal grandmother had a bad relationship. Her mother felt that her grandmother was too controlling and too strict with her. Whether it was her whirlwind marriage, her whirlwind divorce, or her insistence on having her, it was all a form of rebellion against her grandmother.

She was just a month old when her mother went out to work.

In her memory, she had only seen her mother three times.

The first time was when she was learning to read. Her mother came back and gave her a new schoolbag and some new clothes. She stayed at home for one night and then left.

The second time was when she was transitioning from elementary to junior high school. They brought her some new clothes again and asked her if she wanted to go with them, saying that junior high schools in big cities were better.

She refused, and her mother left that same day.

The third time was when she turned eighteen. Her mother came back, looked at her, and said that she was now an adult and could be independent. She said that she would arrange a job for her in the future, and that the rest was really none of her business.

At that time, she was preparing for the college entrance examination and was completely bewildered by what she was being said. Her grandmother was so angry that she kicked her mother out of the house.

She never came back after that.

But she never expected that her mother was not her maternal grandmother's biological daughter.

So, has she now returned to her ancestral roots?

She rubbed her face. More than the shock that her mother wasn't her maternal grandmother's biological daughter, she was furious—furious at this woman she had only met three times for causing her grandmother such harm.

She absolutely refused to believe that her grandmother was the kind of person who would kidnap someone else's child.

Wei Ruochu has harmed Grandma so badly, that's unacceptable!

She clenched her fists tightly, feeling such intense anger towards someone for the first time.

"Bed number 7, you're in arrears. Go pay as soon as possible, or your medication won't be dispensed," the nurse reminded him as she came in.

Wei Yuexin quickly replied, "Okay, I'll go pay right away."

DouDou can withdraw money every Wednesday. Today happens to be Wednesday, so she withdrew 3,000 yuan, plus the big red envelope from last night, and went downstairs to pay the bill. If nothing unexpected happens, it should be enough for the next few days.

The top priority now is to make money.

Just as she was thinking this, the HR sent her a WeChat message saying that her second video content was not good.

Wei Yuexin's heart skipped a beat. How could it not work?

She hurriedly sought advice, and the HR sent a voice message with a gentle voice saying, "You have to think about it. Everyone is playing a game. If you directly tell them that the protagonist is so-and-so and that he has something that can save the world, everyone will flock to find the protagonist. How can the game be played like that?"

"If you accidentally kill the protagonist... the protagonist is the center of a world, and if the protagonist dies, the game is over."

"So at most you can only hint and guide, half-revealing, that's what makes it more interesting."

Wei Yuexin...

You guys need to be so particular about the protagonist-centric approach when you're playing a game?

Forget it, the client is the boss. As long as I can make money, why not?

However, if the protagonist's cheat ability cannot be explicitly stated, there will be very little video content that can be made.

She thought for a moment, then took out her computer and sat by her grandmother's bedside, editing the video.

...

Acid rain in the world.

Three days have passed since the acid rain in City A.

Because City A was well-prepared, apart from those reckless individuals who deliberately waited for the rain in the open, everyone else was fine.

The arrival of that acid rain silenced everyone who was waiting to see what would happen in City A, and they all became uneasy.

The arrival of acid rain means that what Tianmu said is true, and the end times are really coming.

Moreover, netizens later learned that besides City A, 12 other cities in China experienced acid rain that night, resulting in heavy losses, numerous deaths in each city, and hospitals overflowing overnight.

Meanwhile, in other countries, as many as thirty or forty cities have experienced acid rain.

In 12 cities in China, people at least tried to stay home at night after being bombarded with news reports and live broadcasts of the horrific tragedy. But abroad, there was absolutely no preparation, and the casualties were far more severe.

The next morning, a super acid rain warning was issued in China, and the entire nation entered a battle against acid.

In the 13 cities where acid rain has already occurred, emergency disaster relief and rescue efforts are underway. In other cities, non-essential outdoor activities have been suspended, all schools have closed, and many non-essential companies and businesses have ceased operations. People are advised to stay indoors as much as possible, and if they must go out, they should bring acid rain protection gear.

Major grain-producing provinces immediately launched a large-scale grain harvest.

Important freshwater resources should be strategically stockpiled and protected immediately.

Many materials suddenly became strategic resources and were strictly prohibited from being exported.

Factories across the country began mass production of acid-resistant materials, such as the materials for fiberglass sulfuric acid tanks, some polymer synthetic materials, and ceramic materials, etc.

Drug development is also moving in this direction.

Acid-resistant rain gear, protective clothing, filter masks, and neutralizing solutions have become popular production areas.

Every household is urgently reinforcing their houses. In some towns and communities, there is a unified building upgrade, with acid-resistant coatings and materials being applied to the walls and roofs.

People went crazy hoarding food, drinking water, and even gasoline and firewood in their homes.

Even after all that has been done, people still can't stop feeling anxious.

For three days, acid rain fell without warning in different cities. Each drop of acid rain ruined people's preparations, turned their plans into nothing, and caused countless people to get injured and sick.

"Where does this damn acid rain come from?"

"This is still the adaptation period before the apocalypse; the real apocalypse is unimaginable."

"This is a natural disaster that humanity cannot withstand!"

"I'm starting to believe what's in that video; that humanity is destined for destruction."

"Didn't Tianmu say there would be an acid-resistant city in the apocalypse? Where exactly is it? Why is there no follow-up?"

Everyone was waiting anxiously for the sky to clear, their eyes practically green with anticipation. The eyes of the entire world were focused on the skies above City A.

The day after the acid rain appeared, the government dispatched troops to City A to urgently repair the roads damaged by the acid rain, maintain city order, and distribute supplies to every household.

It's clear that City A is being treated as a key strategic city.

Kiki stayed inside, wearing several layers of masks, completely covered up. Looking out the closed window, all the vegetables in her garden were charred black. The little shed next door was really useless.

In the distance, everyone's farmland was also darkened, and the trees on the mountain were also blackened and had lost all their leaves.

Some of the old houses in the village seem to have collapsed or are leaking.

Also, I heard that all the fish and shrimp in the river have floated to the surface and are smelly.

Many of the chickens and ducks raised in the village have died, and the water in the wells and springs is no longer drinkable.

Fortunately, they had plenty of water stored in their water tanks and buckets, but once that water was used up, it would be gone, so they had to use it very sparingly.

Her parents wouldn't let her go out with her grandma, saying the air outside was acidic. Grandma had been coughing for three days. A couple of days ago she could still take Grandpa Zhang's medicine, but Grandpa Zhang's medicine was limited; it was only enough for everyone in the village.

The parents could only try to get medicine for their grandmother, but it seemed like they couldn't find any medicine anywhere.

Qiqi rubbed her nose, feeling that her nose and eyes were also sore and dry.

Suddenly, a large truck drove onto the dirt road at the entrance of the village. Qiqi saw many adults pass by, and then it seemed like something was being delivered from the truck.

After a while, Mom and Dad came back. They took off their clothes and changed their shoes at the door before opening it.

They rushed in quickly and then closed the door, but even so, a strange gust of air still rushed in from outside, sour, and it seemed to be more than just sour.

It smells really bad, and makes you want to cough.

Mom and Dad were very happy, and told Grandma, "It's an army truck, here to deliver supplies. The army has taken over our city, so we don't have to worry about chaos in the city!"
