Chapter 15 - Pregnancy

It had been two months since our wedding.

But something was wrong—I hadn't seen my period for the past two months. At first, I thought it was just my usual delay, but never had it been this late.

Fear gripped me. I had no symptoms—no sickness, no tiredness, nothing. But deep inside, I knew something wasn't right.

I was still lost in thought when Bolaji walked into the room. He sat beside me and looked closely.

Bolaji: "You haven't seen your monthly circle since you got here… I think you're pregnant."

Sarah: "Eh? God forbid! Not now. I have to finish my education first."

Bolaji's face hardened immediately.

Bolaji: "Are you okay? Why would you say that? Who told you you're going to school?"

I froze. My mouth dropped. Did I hear him right? Wasn't that the promise he made to me before marriage?

Sarah: "I don't understand. What are you saying? Isn't it our agreement already—that you'll let me further my education?"

Bolaji: "And I'm saying you're not going again. You haven't even gotten to school yet and you've been talking back at me. If you go, you'll definitely put your finger in my eyes. So forget it. Just stay at home. I'll provide everything you need. I'll even be sending your parents monthly allowance."

Tears pricked my eyes, but anger pushed them back.

Sarah: "I reject it! I will and must go to school. Do you think I want to remain like this? Our marriage is not even up to a year and you've already shown me hell. Do I know what more I'll still see from you?"

Bolaji hissed, shaking his head.

Bolaji: "I knew it. You're ungrateful. So your plan is to dump me after I sponsor you to school? You must be joking. Listen, if you ever think of leaving me, your parents will return every kobo I spent on you—and I'll still make sure you regret it forever."

I stared hard at him. I couldn't see myself living the rest of my life like this. Maybe it was better to end things now before the damage grew deeper.

Sarah: "If you can't send me to school, then I also can't continue this marriage. Calculate everything you've spent on me. My parents will refund what they can, and I'll work hard to pay the rest."

Bolaji burst into laughter.

Bolaji: "You're joking, right? So what's going to happen to my baby?"

Sarah: "What baby? I'm not pregnant!"

Bolaji: "Liar. No problem—we'll go to the hospital right now. Pregnant or not, you're going nowhere. I'm your husband, and I have every right over you. You don't leave me. I'm the one that can decide to leave you. I don't even know where you got this audacity from."

I rolled my eyes in disgust, but I followed him.

At the hospital, we waited anxiously. When the results came back, my heart sank.

I was eight weeks pregnant.

Bolaji's face lit up immediately. He was overjoyed—he was going to be a father soon.

But for me, it felt like the walls were closing in.
