Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Death's Last Defiance

Lin Xiao lay on the cold concrete in a back alley in the city he had always known as home. Rain hammered down like bullets from a machine gun, blood pooled beneath him. His chest rose and fell in shallow gasps. The knife wound in his gut burned like fire. He had trusted the wrong people again. Orphaned since birth, street rat turned small-time hustler. He had taken one last job, a delivery for a gang that promised easy cash. Instead they put a blade in him and left him to die alone.

His vision blurred, the world narrowed to a tunnel of gray. "Why always me?" he muttered through clenched teeth. No family, no friends. Just endless betrayal and scraps of survival. He had fought, every day of his twenty-two years. Fought to eat, fought to stay alive, now the fight was over. Darkness swallowed him whole.

Then came the pain.

Not the fading ache of death. This was something sharper. A ripping sensation like his soul was being yanked from one body and slammed into another. His eyes snapped open. He was no longer on wet concrete. He knelt on polished stone tiles inside a vast hall lit by flickering torches. Chains bit into his wrists. His body felt wrong. Smaller. Weaker. Younger. Eighteen at most. The robes hanging off him were torn and stained with fresh blood.

Voices echoed around him. Harsh. Condemning.

"Lin Xiao, you worthless trash. The Lin Clan has tolerated your existence long enough." The speaker stood on a raised dais. An old man with a long gray beard and eyes like black ice. Elder Lin Zhen. Power radiated from him in waves. Core Formation peak. The kind of cultivator who could crush mountains with a thought.

Lin Xiao blinked hard. Memories that were not his flooded in. This body belonged to the young master of the Lin Clan. Or rather, the former young master. A failure. No talent. Spirit Novice realm at best. A disappointment who had wasted every resource the clan gave him. The clan had decided to execute him for "disgracing the family name." Publicly. Painfully. To set an example.

He tried to stand. The chains held him down. Panic clawed at his throat. This was not a dream. The pain in his side from the modern-world knife was gone. Replaced by bruises and cuts from whatever beating this body had taken before he arrived. His mind raced. Transmigration? He had read stories like this online but those were fiction, this felt real. The cold stone under his knees, the scent of incense and blood in the air. The murderous intent pressing down on him like a mountain.

"Any last words, boy?" Elder Lin Zhen asked. His voice dripped with contempt. Behind him stood a dozen other elders and clan guards. All of them stared at Lin Xiao as if he were already a corpse. Cousin Lin Feng smirked from the side. The arrogant genius who had always looked down on him. Spirit Master early stage. The one who had probably orchestrated this whole farce.

Lin Xiao opened his mouth. But before words came out, a mechanical voice exploded inside his head. Cold, emotionless, like a machine from another universe.

[Infinite Defiance System activated.]

Lin Xiao's breath caught. A blue panel hovered in his vision. Invisible to everyone else. Stats appeared beside it.

Strength: 10

Agility: 10

Vitality: 10

Intelligence: 10

Defense: 10

Luck: 8

All base values. Trash tier. But the system promised unlimited growth. No caps. Just defiance.

The pressure hit him like a hammer.

Elder Lin Zhen raised one hand. Pure killing intent poured out. Invisible blades of qi sliced into Lin Xiao's skin. Blood welled up from a hundred tiny cuts. His body screamed. Every nerve ignited. This was not a physical attack. It was soul-deep terror. Designed to make strong men weep and beg for mercy.

Lin Xiao gritted his teeth. Pain flooded him. But something else rose with it. Rage. The same rage that had kept him alive on the streets. The refusal to bow. Not here. Not in this new life.

"Sixty seconds," the system intoned. A timer appeared in the corner of his vision. 59... 58...

Blood trickled down his arms. His health bar dropped. 95 percent... 90... Each drop earned him a point. 5 DP... 10 DP... The system fed the numbers directly into his mind.

He looked up at Elder Lin Zhen, their eyes met. The old man's expression twisted in surprise. Most victims at this stage were already crying. Pleading. This boy stared back with defiance burning in his gaze.

"You think this will break me?" Lin Xiao growled. His voice came out hoarse but steady. "I've died once today. I'll die a thousand times before I kneel to a scum like you."

The killing intent intensified. It felt like knives twisting in his organs. His vision swam red. Health dropped faster. 70 percent... 60... 15 DP gained so far. His body shook. Muscles tore. Bones creaked under the invisible weight. But he did not scream.

Memories of the old world flashed through him. The alley, the betrayal and the rain. He didn't give up then and he would not now.

Lin Feng laughed from the sidelines. "Look at the trash. Still pretending to be tough. Pathetic."

"Shut your mouth," Lin Xiao spat. Blood flew from his lips. Health at 45 percent. 55 DP earned. The pain was a living thing now. It clawed at his sanity. But the system rewarded every second he held on.

[Defiant Overdrive skill blueprint loading. Requires quest completion.]

The timer ticked. 32... 31...

Elder Lin Zhen narrowed his eyes. "Impressive for a trash but futile." He poured more power into the intent. The air around Lin Xiao cracked. Stone tiles beneath him splintered.

Lin Xiao's knees buckled. He forced them straight. Health plunged to 22 percent. 78 DP. His heart hammered like it would explode. Vision tunneled. But he laughed. A raw, broken sound that echoed through the hall.

"You call this power?" he shouted. "I've faced worse from street dogs. Come on. Hit me harder. I want every last drop."

The clan elders murmured in shock. This was not the weak young master they knew. Something had changed. The boy's eyes glowed with unnatural fire.

Health hit 12 percent. 88 DP. The system voice spoke again.

[Warning: Health critical. Under 5 percent threshold approaching. Quest progress: 92 percent complete.]

Lin Xiao's body felt like it was tearing apart. Blood poured from his nose, his ears, his eyes. But he locked his gaze on Elder Lin Zhen. Unyielding. Defiant to the core.

Twenty seconds left.

The killing intent became a storm. Lin Xiao's health bar flashed red. 8 percent... 7... 6...

He screamed then. Not in surrender. In pure rage. "I will not die here! Not like this! I'll defy you all!"

Health dropped to 4 percent. The system chimed.

[Quest complete! 800 Defiance Points awarded.]

[Defiant Overdrive unlocked: Activate to multiply all stats by 10 for 60 seconds. Cooldown: 24 hours. Backlash risk if overused.]

Lin Xiao felt power flood into him. Not yet activated. But the knowledge of it burned in his veins like liquid fire. He could use it now if he wanted. But he held back. Saved it for the real fight.

The killing intent vanished. Elder Lin Zhen lowered his hand. Confusion flickered across the old man's face for the first time.

"Impossible," he muttered. "No one survives that at Spirit Novice."

Lin Xiao coughed up blood. His body was a ruin. But he was alive. The chains still held him, but the system had already begun repairing the worst damage with the points earned. Vitality ticked up slowly.

"Release the chains," Lin Xiao said. His voice was steady now. "Or I'll break free myself."

Lin Feng stepped forward. "Elder, let me finish him. This freak needs to learn his place."

Elder Lin Zhen raised a hand to stop him. "No. The execution proceeds as planned. Guards. Prepare the execution blade."

Lin Xiao smiled through bloody teeth. The first real smile this new body had ever worn. "Come on then. Let's see how many of you I take with me."

The system panel updated again.

[Daily Quest issued: Survive the next hour or face soul deletion.]

[Main Quest progress: Clan execution escape route unlocked. Earn 500 more DP by reaching under 1 percent health in the coming battle.]

[Penalty timer: 7 days of no defiance equals system deletion.]

Lin Xiao rose to his feet as the guards approached. The chains rattled. His muscles burned. But inside, something unbreakable had awakened. He was no longer the trash young master. He was the host of the Infinite Defiance System.

And this world was about to learn what defiance truly meant.

The first guard swung a heavy sword. Lin Xiao dodged on pure instinct. The blade whistled past his ear. He grabbed the man's wrist with surprising strength. The 800 points had already begun boosting his base stats slightly. Not enough for a full fight yet. But enough to buy time.

He headbutted the guard. Cartilage crunched. The man staggered back and bkood spilled.

"Next," Lin Xiao snarled.

Elder Lin Zhen watched with growing fury. "Kill him. Slowly."

Three more guards charged. Lin Xiao activated nothing yet. He wanted the points. He let their strikes land. A fist to the ribs. A kick to the knee. Pain exploded. Health dropped to 35 percent again. 65 more DP earned.

He laughed through it all. The sound was mad. Unhinged. But it carried power.

Cousin Lin Feng drew his own sword. "I'll do it myself."

Lin Xiao met his eyes. "Try it, I've been waiting for this."

The fight spilled across the hall. Tables overturned. Torches scattered. Clan members shouted in alarm. Lin Xiao took hit after hit. Deliberately. Greedily. Each one fed the system. Each one made him stronger.

At 9 percent health he finally moved.

"Defiant Overdrive," he whispered.

Power surged. His stats multiplied by ten. The world slowed. He blurred forward. His fist connected with Lin Feng's chest. Bones cracked. The cousin flew twenty feet and slammed into a pillar.

Screams erupted.

Elder Lin Zhen roared and unleashed a full qi blast. A wave of energy that could level a building.

Lin Xiao stood his ground. Overdrive still active. He punched straight into the blast. The collision shook the entire hall. Cracks spiderwebbed across the walls.

Health dipped to 3 percent from the backlash. But the points poured in. Another 200 DP.

The timer on Overdrive counted down. 47 seconds left.

Lin Xiao charged towards the dais. Guards fell like wheat before a scythe. He grabbed one by the throat and used him as a shield against the next attack. Blood soaked his robes. His own and theirs.

Elder Lin Zhen leaped down. Core Formation power fully unleashed. The air turned thick with killing intent again.

But this time Lin Xiao was ready.

"You wanted an execution?" he said. "Here's one."

He met the elder head-on. Fists against qi. Defiance against cultivation.

The hall descended into chaos. Flames licked at the curtains. Shouts turned to panic. Lin Xiao's body screamed for rest. The Overdrive backlash would hit soon. But he kept moving. Kept fighting. Kept defying.

Sixty seconds of pure survival had bought him this chance. Now he would carve his own path out of this hell.

As the elder's next strike came, Lin Xiao smiled again. Bloody, broken and unstoppable.

This was only the beginning.
