Chapter 1 - The Night My Fate Was Stolen

Chapter 1

The moon should have felt warm on my skin that night, welcoming, familiar, the way it always did during a Ceremony of Fate. But under the silver glow, all I felt was dread curling like smoke in my lungs.

I shouldn't have been shaking. I shouldn't have been holding my breath.

This night was supposed to be my salvation.

I was finally going to meet my mate.

Every girl dreamed of this moment, stepping onto the ceremonial stone, the pack gathered in a perfect crescent, waiting for the goddess to reveal the pair destined by blood and moonlight. A promise etched into our bones. A future no one could take away.

But deep inside, something whispered that my future was already slipping through my fingers.

"Elaine," Alpha Rowan called, his voice echoing through the clearing. "Step forward."

I did. Feet steady. Heart violently unsteady.

The entire Mooncrest Pack watched, their gazes sharp, murmurs rising like wind through dead leaves. Not admiration. Not excitement.

Suspicion.

Disgust.

Pity.

They all knew I was different, born without a wolf, without the strength our kind lived and bled for. A weakness my stepmother made sure was never forgotten.

Still, the moon had chosen nights like this to repair broken lives.

Maybe it would fix mine too.

I stepped onto the stone. Its surface was cold beneath my bare feet.

Across the clearing stood Eamon Blackwood.

My breath caught.

The Alpha's son. The strongest warrior of his generation. Tall, broad-shouldered, with storm-gray eyes that always seemed to see too much. The one everyone assumed would reject an omega-born girl like me.

But tonight, when our eyes met… something in his gaze shifted.

Hope. A dangerous, traitorous hope flickered in my chest.

Alpha Rowan raised his staff. The sky trembled. The light of the moon intensified, funneling down in a swirling column that wrapped around me and Eamon like silver mist.

Gasps rippled through the pack.

This was it.

The bond was forming.

I felt a pull, soft at first, then sharp, yanking at my ribcage, drawing me toward him as if some invisible thread had been tied between us.

Eamon inhaled sharply. His eyes widened.

He felt it too.

The tether. The spark. The signs of a destined mate.

My heart soared.

Finally… finally something in this life was mine.

But Eamon's face changed, hope collapsing, replaced by shock… then horror.

"No," he whispered.

The pack stirred.

He took a step back.

"No. This—this can't be happening."

The moonlight pulsed once more, sealing what the goddess had chosen.

And Eamon snapped.

"I reject her!"

The words cut through me like claws. The pack erupted into gasps and whispers. My knees buckled, and pain crashed through my entire body, raw, searing, suffocating.

The rejection was like being torn apart from the inside.

Eamon kept going, voice frantic, almost terrified:

"I refuse this bond! I refuse her! She is nothing. She has no wolf, she's defective!"

My vision blurred. The moonlight shattered around me like broken glass.

Alpha Rowan tried to intervene, but Eamon shouted louder:

"I will not be bound to someone who can't even shift!"

Laughter, whispers, mockery, everything blurred together. Someone spat near my feet. My stepmother smirked, finally seeing her perfect moment to destroy me.

I tried to breathe, but air wouldn't come.

I forced out a whisper. "Eamon… please…"

He looked at me as if I were disease.

"Don't say my name." His voice was a blade. "You were never meant to stand beside me."

Something inside me cracked.

And for the first time, I wished I could hate him.

The Alpha lifted his staff again, but before he could speak, a roar cut through the night, deep, ancient, powerful enough to shake the trees.

The air thickened.

The ground trembled.

Every wolf in the pack dropped to their knees.

A shadow descended into the clearing, massive, dark, and radiating a terrifying, magnetic power. The moon dimmed as if bowing to him.

A figure stepped forward, tall, broad, cloaked in black, with eyes like molten gold burning through the dark.

My heart froze.

This wasn't a wolf.

This was a Lycan.

And not just any Lycan.

Whispers tore through the pack:

"The Lycan King…"

"Why is he here?"

"Hide your children—don't look directly at him!"

Fear suffocated the clearing.

But his eyes… his eyes were locked on me.

He approached slowly, each step measured, predatory, controlled by a power I felt vibrating beneath my skin.

The crowd parted without being told.

He stopped right in front of me.

Eamon tensed like he was preparing to fight, but one low growl from the stranger made him collapse to one knee, trembling.

The Lycan King tilted my chin up with one gloved hand.

His touch was cold, but somehow warmer than the pack I had lived with my entire life.

His gaze dragged over my face, down to my trembling hands, lingering as if cataloging every inch of me.

Then he spoke, voice deep and dangerous:

"Who rejected you?"

The crowd erupted in trembling silence.

I swallowed. "He… he did."

Eamon couldn't move. Couldn't speak.

The king's golden eyes hardened, glowing with something violent.

"He rejected the one under the moon's protection?" His gaze returned to me. "Your pain called to me across the woods."

Pain.

Called to him.

My blood ran cold.

Was that even possible?

The king's voice lowered, intimate and final:

"You are not mate-less, little wolf."

My breath hitched.

He leaned closer, and the entire pack recoiled like lightning had struck.

"I claim you."

The world stopped.

No one breathed.

I stared at him, stunned. Claimed… by the Lycan King? The most feared ruler in the realm? The male whose name mothers used to scare their children into behaving?

He straightened, voice booming across the clearing:

"From this moment, she belongs to me."

Gasps. Screams. Shock.

And me, standing in the center of the chaos, heart pounding in terror and something else I couldn't name.

My entire fate—once stolen—had just been rewritten by the most dangerous creature alive.

And I had no idea if this new destiny would save me…

or destroy me.
