The Hunter in the Shadows – Episode 1: The Warning

The wind whispered through the trees, cold and quiet, carrying the smell of damp earth and something rotten. Marcus Vale stood at the edge of the forest, staring at the fog that moved like it had a life of its own. Moonlight barely shone through the trees, leaving the forest dark and full of shadows. Somewhere out there, something was watching him. And it was not human.

Marcus held his sword tightly. He had fought monsters before—beasts that ate people, creatures that could vanish into the night—but this forest made his stomach twist. Something about it was… wrong.

A branch cracked. Marcus spun, crossbow ready. A black crow flew out, cawing loudly. Marcus exhaled slowly. He was not afraid—he had learned not to be—but a shiver ran down his spine.

"Marcus Vale." The voice was soft, almost carried by the wind.

Marcus froze. From the fog stepped a woman. Her hair was dark and messy, and she walked barefoot, as if she belonged to the forest. Her eyes were sharp and serious.

"You shouldn't be here," she said. "Not yet. This forest… it's alive. And it's hungry."

Marcus studied her. "Who are you?"

"Elara," she said. "I've warned hunters before, but most don't listen. You should turn back, before it finds you."

"I hunt monsters," Marcus said. "I go where danger is. That's what I do."

Elara shook her head. "This is not like any monster you've faced. It can change you. It can break your mind. And it will follow you… always."

Marcus felt a cold fear he hadn't felt in years. He remembered past hunts, people he couldn't save, hunters who never came back. His hands tightened on his weapons.

A shadow moved in the trees. Quick. Wrong. He spun, sword ready, but it disappeared. The crow cried again, sharp and angry.

"They're watching," Elara whispered. "They've been waiting for you."

Marcus squared his shoulders. "Then I'll make them regret it."

Elara's eyes softened. "You may regret more than that… Hunter. Once you step into the darkness, it never lets go. And when it catches you, it won't be the forest that mourns you… it will be you."

Marcus took a deep breath and stepped into the fog. The ridge behind him faded.

From the shadows came a soft whisper, almost like it was inside his head:

"Hunter… you are mine."
