Chapter 1 - The Mark

The night I turned nineteen I died.

Not literally but something inside me stopped breathing. It started at the party. So much loud music, flashing lights, people I barely know dancing, having fun, pretending to care because my father owned half of the city.

I should've felt powerful. Instead I felt watched, happy, strange and nervous at the same time. My extended families were present to celebrate with me friends and well wishes.

Relax, Elena. You look like you have seen a ghost. I forced a smile at my best friend Nora, but my fingers tightened around the glass of wine in my hand. The air felt... Wrong, heavy like something dangerous was hidden beneath it or was about to explode.

The lights flickered, once twice then went out. A few people around me laughed nervously. Some screamed as drinks shattered on the floor. And then silence. Not normal silence, the kind that presses your ears until your heart start pounding till you feel it.

That's when I felt it. A presence right behind me, my breath caught, couldn't get hold of myself anymore.Dont turn around, a voice whispered, low, cold, masculine too close. Every instinct in my body told me to run but I didn't, I couldn't.

Good, he murmured as if pleased by my fear. You listen well.My pulse hammered in my throat. "W-who are you?" A soft chuckle brushed through my ear. "Someone who's been waiting patiently for a long time for you, Elena.

My name. He knew my name, before I could react something could found its way to the side of my neck, his fingers, no not fingers fangs. A sharp sting pierced my skin. I gasped my throat tried up instantly, my knees buckling as a strange heat exploded through my body. It wasn't pain, it was something worse, something alive.

What did you do to me? I whispered, my voice trembling. His grip tightened around me just good enough to hold me in place. "I woke you up".

The lights snapped back on music continued as if it never stopped, the party continue as if nothing happened. But he was gone, no one noticed no one saw. Then I touched my neck, there were no bite marks, only I fade faint burning symbol beneath my skin. That was the moment I realized the truth, I was been haunted, l was been claimed.

Many thoughts creaped through my mind, unsure of what just happened to me drawn in the chaos of confusion, thinking while trying to observe my surroundings and gain full control of myself. My heart still racing from many thoughts I tried not to make it look obviously, I requested more whine from a waitress nearby, faked a smile even though I knew deep down my heart was not in one piece.

Throughout the the party I tried to erase what I just experience from my mind, interacting more with my friends and family in a way a was not standing or watching at the crouds alone, my best friend Nora made sure she kept me going. I listened more even though I never really gave thought to anything I did onward.

The Dj at the party slowed the music a little, because my father was on stage and about to make a speech.I watched as everyone gazed slightly at me while cheering and clapping loud. My father soon gave his wonderful speech same as mom. I was finally called up on stage, with lots to cheering and music mix up and claps as well, I was nervous not know what to do or say I just wished myself more fortune as deliberate within myself knowing it's a new beginning towards the prospective of life for me.
