Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Eyes in the Dark

The music in the grand hall continued as if nothing had changed, but something invisible had already shifted. Conversations resumed, laughter returned, glasses clinked—but beneath it all, tension lingered like a shadow no one could quite see.

Elena Rothschild remained where she stood for a few seconds after he left, her gaze still fixed on the crowd where Kael Draven had disappeared. She didn't follow him. She didn't need to.

She could still feel him.

That presence… it hadn't vanished.

"…This is ridiculous," she muttered under her breath, forcing her expression back into its usual calm indifference. She turned away, picking up a glass from a passing tray, though she didn't drink it. Her mind was no longer on the event.

It was on him.

---

Across the hall, Kael stood near a tall window, his reflection faint against the dark glass. From the outside, he appeared completely composed, engaged in light conversation with a group of influential figures. His posture was relaxed, his tone smooth, his responses perfectly measured.

But his mind was elsewhere.

"…What are you?" Elena's voice echoed faintly in his thoughts.

His fingers tightened ever so slightly around the glass in his hand.

No human had ever asked him that before.

Not like that.

Not with certainty hidden beneath doubt.

Kael's gaze lifted subtly, scanning the room without moving his head. The crowd blurred in his perception as he focused on something deeper—something beneath the surface.

And then he felt it.

Not Elena.

Someone else.

Watching.

---

In the far corner of the hall, where light dimmed and attention rarely reached, a man stood partially concealed behind a pillar. His presence was quiet, controlled—almost invisible to ordinary perception.

But not to Kael.

Their eyes met for a brief moment across the distance.

The man didn't look away.

Instead, a faint smile appeared on his lips.

"…Interesting," Kael murmured softly.

---

Moments later, Elena stepped out onto the balcony, the cool night air brushing against her skin as the noise of the hall softened behind her. The city stretched endlessly before her, glowing beneath the dark sky.

She exhaled slowly, placing her hands lightly against the railing.

Peaceful.

But not enough.

Her thoughts were still restless.

"You always leave when things get complicated."

The voice came from behind her.

Elena's expression didn't change, but her grip tightened slightly.

"I don't remember inviting you," she said calmly without turning.

A man stepped forward into the soft light of the balcony.

Adrian Vale.

Tall, refined, and undeniably handsome—but there was something sharp in his eyes, something calculating hidden beneath the charm.

"It's been a while, Elena," he said, his voice smooth.

Now she turned.

Slowly.

Her gaze met his—and for the first time that night, something colder than indifference appeared in her eyes.

"…You shouldn't be here."

Adrian chuckled lightly. "That's not exactly the warmest welcome."

"You lost the right to expect one," she replied, her voice cutting through the air like glass.

For a moment, silence hung between them.

Then Adrian's expression shifted slightly—not anger, but something closer to curiosity.

"I heard about him," he said casually. "The new heir."

Elena didn't respond.

"He's interesting," Adrian continued, stepping closer. "But you should be careful."

That made her pause.

"Careful?" she repeated quietly.

Adrian's gaze sharpened. "There's something wrong with him."

Elena's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…I know."

---

Inside the hall, Kael's attention shifted the moment he felt Elena's presence move further away. His gaze flicked toward the balcony doors, his expression darkening ever so slightly.

Then—

He felt it again.

That same presence from before.

Closer now.

A voice spoke beside him.

"You're not from around here, are you?"

Kael didn't turn immediately.

"I could say the same about you," he replied calmly.

The man stepped into his line of sight.

Lucien Graves.

His appearance was unremarkable at first glance—dark hair, sharp features, dressed like any other elite guest. But his eyes… they were different.

Too aware.

Too knowing.

Lucien smiled faintly. "You hide it well," he said quietly. "Most wouldn't notice."

Kael finally turned fully toward him, his crimson gaze meeting Lucien's without hesitation.

"Notice what?" Kael asked, his tone smooth.

Lucien's smile deepened slightly.

"The fact that you're not human."

---

For a brief moment—

The air around them grew heavy.

Invisible pressure clashed, subtle yet dangerous.

Kael didn't react outwardly, but something cold flickered beneath his calm exterior.

"…Careful," he said softly. "That's not something you should say lightly."

Lucien leaned in slightly, his voice dropping.

"And you should be careful," he replied, "coming into a world that already has monsters of its own."

---

On the balcony, Elena's heartbeat suddenly spiked again.

Stronger than before.

She froze.

Her hand moved to her chest instinctively, her breathing uneven for a brief second.

"…What is this…?" she whispered.

It wasn't just Kael anymore.

There was something else.

Something darker.

And it was close.

---

Back inside, Kael's gaze remained locked with Lucien's.

The faint smile on his lips disappeared completely.

For the first time since arriving in the human world—

Something had stepped into his path.

Not prey.

Not a pawn.

But something… unpredictable.

---

Lucien straightened, adjusting his sleeve casually as if nothing had happened. "We'll talk again," he said lightly before turning away, disappearing into the crowd just as smoothly as he had appeared.

Kael didn't stop him.

Didn't follow.

But his eyes remained cold.

"…This world," he murmured quietly, "might be more interesting than I thought."

---

On the balcony, Elena turned sharply toward the doors, her instincts pulling her back inside despite every part of her telling her to stay away.

Because whatever she had just felt—

It was connected to him.

---

As she stepped back into the hall, her gaze immediately searched for Kael.

And across the room—

He was already looking at her.

---

This time, there was no distance in their awareness.

No confusion.

Only one clear, unspoken truth:

Something dangerous had begun.
