Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The lies

The Vance house looms at the end of the road.

Elena stares at it through the car window. The front door is open. The lights are on. Eleanor is waiting.

Marcus parks at the bottom of the driveway.

"I'll be here," he says.

Elena's phone buzzes.

"Come alone. I'm watching."

She looks up. A curtain moves in the upstairs window.

She steps out.

The gravel crunches beneath her feet. The house grows larger, darker.

Eleanor stands in the hallway. Her hair is perfect. Her dress is pressed. But her hands tremble.

"You came," Eleanor says.

"You said to come alone."

She steps back. "Close the door."

Elena steps inside. The door clicks shut.

The parlor smells of lavender and lemon polish. Clara's piano sits untouched. The portraits watch from the walls.

"Sit," Eleanor says.

Elena doesn't move. "Where is she?"

"Who?"

"Celeste. You said you'd show me who she really is."

Eleanor walks to the piano. Lifts the lid. Pulls out a photograph.

She holds it out.

Elena takes it.

Celeste. Young. Dark hair. Standing beside a man Elena doesn't recognize. His arm is around her waist.

"You know who that is?" Eleanor asks.

Elena shakes her head.

"Daniel Cross. Damon's father." Eleanor's voice is poison wrapped in calm. "That photograph was taken three months before the fire. Three months before your mother tried to burn her lover's house down with his wife inside."

Elena's blood runs cold.

"You're lying."

"I was there." Eleanor steps closer. "I saw her pour the gasoline. I saw her light the match. I saw her run inside to save you—not because she loved you, but because she needed to be a hero."

"Why should I believe you?"

"Because I have proof." Eleanor opens a folder on the desk. "Witness statements. Insurance claims. Your mother didn't go into hiding because she was afraid of me. She went into hiding because she was afraid of the truth."

Elena looks at the papers. At the woman who was supposed to be her mother.

"Then why did you take me?" Elena's voice cracks. "If she was the monster, why did you steal me?"

Eleanor's face softens. "Because you were innocent. Because I thought I could save you from becoming her."

"You didn't save me. You buried me. You raised me like I was nothing."

Eleanor's face hardens. "You want the truth? Fine." She walks to the window. "Celeste Cross was obsessed with Daniel. He wouldn't leave his wife. So she burned them both."

She turns.

"Daniel's wife survived. Celeste ran. She left you behind because you were a liability. A witness. A child who would grow up to look like her."

Elena's hands curl into fists. "You're wrong."

"Am I?" Eleanor steps closer. "You married a man you didn't know. You dug into secrets that had nothing to do with you. You are exactly what she was—a woman who takes what doesn't belong to her."

Elena's phone buzzes.

Damon: "Where are you? I'm coming in."

She types: "No. Give me ten minutes."

Eleanor watches her. "You're already choosing him. Just like she chose Daniel."

Eleanor picks up the folder. Holds it out.

"This is everything. The truth. The proof. Take it. Let Damon decide what kind of mother he wants you to have."

Elena takes the folder.

"If this is true," she says slowly, "why did you wait until now to tell me?"

Eleanor doesn't answer.

"You kept this secret because it wasn't about protecting me. It was about controlling me."

Eleanor's face tightens.

"I know you never loved me." Elena's voice is steady. "I know you took me to hurt her. I know you raised me as a spare because you wanted me to feel like nothing."

She steps forward.

"But I'm not nothing. I'm whoever I choose to be."

Eleanor's mask cracks. Rage flashes beneath.

"You think walking out that door changes anything? She will use you. He will use you. They will take everything."

Elena clutches the folder to her chest.

"Maybe. But at least I'll know who I am."

She turns toward the door.

"Elena."

She stops.

"If you walk out that door, you are no daughter of mine."

Elena doesn't turn around.

"I never was."

She opens the door.

The cold air hits her face. She gasps.

Marcus opens the car door. She climbs inside. Her hands won't stop shaking.

"What happened?" Marcus asks.

"Drive."

Marcus pulls away.

Elena looks back. Eleanor stands in the doorway, watching.

Her phone buzzes.

Damon: "What did she tell you?"

She stares at the screen. She should tell him. But her fingers won't move.

She looks at the folder. At the photograph of Celeste and Daniel. A woman who poured gasoline. Or a woman who was framed.

She doesn't know who to believe.

Her phone buzzes again. A number she doesn't recognize.

"Your mother lied to you tonight. Open the folder. Look at the date on the photograph."

Elena's breath catches.

She opens the folder. Pulls out the photograph. Turns it over.

The date stamp: Six months after the fire.

Her mother lied.

"Who is this?"

Three dots appear.

"Someone who's been waiting for you to come home."

Elena's blood runs cold.

Headlights catch something ahead. A car parked across the road. Blocking them.

Marcus slams the brakes.

A woman steps out.

Dark hair. Familiar eyes. The face from the photograph.

Celeste.

She walks toward Elena's window.

Elena rolls it down.

"Your mother," Celeste says, "is a liar. And tonight, I'm going to prove it."
