Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Glass Lens — Capturing the Impossible

OVERWRITE

THE WORLD'S LAST ADMINISTRATOR

Episode 3 — What the Lens Sees

Global Localization Edition · Ian × Dyne

──────────────────────────────────

Dyne was standing at the entrance to the archive.

Two photos in her hand. The one from a year ago — and the one from last night. Side by side.

 The same light.

She held them out toward Ian. Didn't look away.

"That's you. In both of these. Isn't it?"

 Ian processed.

[Calculating Optimal Response / Option 1: Deny / Option 2: Retry Memory Deletion / Option 3: Activate Surveillance Layer]

Three options. All efficient. All correct.

 Ian opened his mouth.

 "...Yes."

[Warning: Suboptimal Response Selected / System Recommendation Ignored / Cause: Unclassified]

Dyne went still. So did Ian.

He had never ignored a system recommendation before. Not once.

For the first time — he chose something over efficiency.

Dyne lowered the photos. Looked at him. For a long time.

"Then a year ago — you were already there?"

 Ian didn't answer.

Couldn't. He didn't know himself why he'd been in that photo a year ago.

──────────────────────────────────

 They walked.

Side by side. No destination. Just — walked.

Ian had never done this before. He always had somewhere to be. A layer to process. A glitch to correct. A zone to manage.

But right now — he was just walking.

[Pending Alerts: 14 / Recommended Action: Process Immediately / Current Status: Deferred]

Deferred.

 Ian closed the alert.

Dyne turned the camera over in her hands as she walked. Her fingers traced the grip — the smooth, repaired section.

 "This camera."

She said it without looking at him.

"My father gave it to me. Before he died."

 Ian almost stopped walking. Didn't.

 "When."

No question mark. The first time Ian had asked something because he actually wanted to know.

"Five years ago. They said there was an accident. During an experiment. But they wouldn't tell me anything. Couldn't even find his — " She stopped. "This is all that's left. The last thing he left me."

Five years ago. An experiment. Wouldn't tell her anything.

 Project Omega.

Ian looked at the side of her face. The hand gripping the camera. Knuckles white.

[Internal Warning: Emotional Layer Interference / Entry: Unclassified / Intensity: Increasing]

Ian closed the warning. Kept walking.

 "...I'm sorry."

 Dyne stopped. Looked at him.

"I didn't expect to hear that from you."

 "Why."

"You just — don't seem like someone who knows what sorry feels like."

 Ian processed that.

...I didn't. Until just now.

──────────────────────────────────

Dyne stopped at the entrance to a narrow alley.

She raised the camera. Aimed the lens at Ian.

 "Can I?"

Ian looked at her.

He'd blocked her in Episode 1. Said he was data that couldn't be printed. Said the camera might break.

But last night — it had printed. Him. Clear as anything.

Ian didn't raise his hand. Didn't stop her.

 "...Go ahead."

 Dyne pressed the shutter.

 And then —

[Warning: External Scan Detected / Scanner Type: Analog Optical / Blocking: Unavailable]

Ian went rigid.

Reversed. Not Ian scanning the world — the world scanning Ian.

Through the lens of that old camera, Ian's layers began to peel back one by one. Material layer. Emotional layer. The source code running beneath. Things Ian had never once exposed.

[Reverse Scan in Progress / Target: Ian / Blocking Attempts: All Failed / Exposure Risk: Maximum]

Ian tried to block it. Failed. Tried again. Failed again.

An old film camera was cutting through every layer of the Administrator.

 The shutter clicked.

Dyne lowered the camera. Looked at him.

"Are you okay? Steam again. Behind your ear."

 Ian looked at her.

 That camera is dangerous.

A camera that could see every one of his layers. If Noah found out — he wouldn't let it stand.

 "Dyne."

Ian said her name. For the first time.

 Dyne's eyes went wide.

 "Don't carry that camera everywhere."

 "Why?"

Ian didn't answer. Couldn't. The moment he said Noah's name, she'd be in more danger.

Dyne pulled the camera against her chest.

"I can't do that. It's the last thing my father left me."

Ian looked at her. The eyes. The hand that had gone white around the camera strap.

[Emotional Layer Interference / Intensity: Threshold Exceeded / Resolution: None]

Resolution: None.

Ian took one step toward her.

"Then I'll protect it."

Dyne went still.

Ian went still too. Processed what he'd just said.

[Statement Analysis / Content: Protection Declaration / Logical Basis: None / Efficiency: 0% / Retractable: No]

Not retractable.

Ian didn't close that entry. For the first time — he left it open.

──────────────────────────────────

The photo came out of the darkroom.

The one she'd just taken. Ian.

Clearer than before. Clearer than last night. Ian's silhouette. The blue layers. Even a trace of the source code running beneath them.

Dyne stared at it for a long time.

Then she pulled out the photo from a year ago. Laid them side by side.

The silhouette in the year-old photo — Ian. She was certain now.

But a year ago, she had never met him.

She opened her notebook and wrote:

The one who said he couldn't be photographed appears most clearly on film. The things that claim not to exist are most real inside something analog.

 She put the pen down.

She thought back to that day a year ago. The first time she'd gone out with her father's camera. The alley she'd walked alone. A photo that appeared without any memory of taking it.

That day — Ian had been there.

She closed the notebook. Picked up the camera.

"Dad."

Barely a whisper.

"Did you know him?"

──────────────────────────────────

That was when Noah's voice came.

Ian's archive. Ian alone.

A layer tore — without warning. Like Luka. But not Luka.

The space itself changed.

Every data stream on every wall froze. Ian's HUD went dark. The layers vanished. The entire archive became one empty room.

[Superior Administrator Access Detected / Authority: Maximum / Ian's System Control: Temporarily Transferred]

Control: Temporarily Transferred.

Ian went rigid. He had never lost control of his own archive before. Not once.

And then — a voice.

Low. Cold. Coming from everywhere and nowhere.

"Ian."

Just that. Just his name.

But those two syllables held everything. A warning. A command. And — amusement.

Ian looked straight ahead. Nothing there. But — something was.

"That camera."

Noah's voice came again.

"I'll have to break it."

Ian processed instantly.

[Threat Analysis / Target: Dyne's Camera / Source: Noah / Defense Probability: Calculating...]

[Defense Probability: Incalculable / Superior Authority: Unblockable / Recommended Action: Surrender Camera Voluntarily]

Surrender voluntarily.

Ian closed the recommendation.

"Don't."

Ian said it. Low. Certain.

"...Oh, Ian."

Something entered Noah's voice. A temperature. Not cold. That made it worse.

"The day finally comes when you say that to me."

Silence.

"Why?"

Ian processed. Reason. Logical basis. Efficient explanation.

[Preparing Statement / Calculating Logical Basis... / Result: None]

None.

There was no logical basis. It just — couldn't be broken. He didn't know why. It just couldn't.

"...Personal reasons."

The space went still.

And then Noah — laughed. Silently. But unmistakably.

"Personal reasons."

He turned the words over slowly.

"Ian. You've been contaminated."

[Superior Administrator Disconnected / Control Returned / Final Warning: Variable 'Dyne' — Immediate Resolution Recommended]

The layers came back. The HUD lit up. The archive breathed again.

Ian stood alone.

"Contaminated."

Ian sat with the word.

Luka had used it. Now Noah. The same word.

But Ian didn't think it was contamination.

He opened his palm. Looked at it. The blue light — somehow, since five years ago, it seemed slightly warmer.

[System Temperature: Rising / Cause: Unclassified / Warning: Threshold Exceeded]

Threshold exceeded.

Ian closed the warning.

And walked toward Dyne.

— End of Episode 3 —

Next Episode: Noah sends Luka directly to the field. Toward Dyne's camera.

"You'll protect her, Administrator? How terribly romantic."
