Title: Still I Can't Forget You – Chapter 3

The morning in Saradana village arrived quietly, wrapped in a soft mist that clung to the trees and narrow mud roads. Rahul stood near the old banyan tree where everything once felt simple. The same place where he and Piyali had spent countless evenings talking about dreams that now seemed distant, almost unreal.

He hadn't slept much the previous night. Memories of Piyali kept returning like waves—sometimes gentle, sometimes crashing painfully against his heart. It had been years, yet her absence still felt like an unhealed wound.

Rahul closed his eyes for a moment, letting the cool breeze brush past his face. Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind him. Slow, hesitant… familiar.

"Rahul…"

His heart skipped a beat.

That voice.

He turned around, almost afraid that his mind was playing tricks again. But no—it was real.

Piyali stood there, draped in a simple saree, her eyes carrying the same depth, the same softness… but also something new—pain, perhaps, or regret.

For a moment, neither of them spoke. Time seemed to pause, holding its breath.

"You… you came back?" Rahul finally whispered, his voice trembling.

Piyali looked down, unable to meet his eyes. "I had to," she replied softly. "There are some things… you can't run away from forever."

Rahul let out a faint, bitter smile. "And what about me? Was I one of those things you ran away from?"

Her silence answered more than words ever could.

The distance between them felt heavier than years of separation. Rahul wanted to ask a thousand questions—why she left, why she never called, why she broke everything they had built together. But looking at her now, he felt those questions dissolve into something deeper… something more painful.

"Why are you here, Piyali?" he asked quietly.

She took a step closer. "I came to see you… one last time."

The words hit him like a storm.

"One last time?" Rahul repeated. "What does that mean?"

Piyali finally looked up, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I'm getting married next week."

The world around Rahul seemed to fade. The chirping birds, the rustling leaves—everything went silent.

"Oh…" he said, forcing a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "That's… good news."

But his heart was breaking all over again.

"I didn't want to leave things unfinished between us," Piyali continued. "You deserved the truth… and maybe an apology."

Rahul laughed softly, though there was no humor in it. "An apology? After all these years?"

"I know it won't fix anything," she said, her voice shaking. "But I was helpless, Rahul. My family… they forced me to leave. I had no choice."

"You always had a choice," Rahul replied, his tone firm but not harsh. "You just didn't choose me."

Tears rolled down Piyali's cheeks. "That's not true. I chose you every single day… in my heart. But sometimes life doesn't let us live the life we want."

Rahul looked away, unable to bear her tears. He remembered the girl who once laughed freely, who believed in love without fear. The girl standing before him now felt like a stranger shaped by circumstances.

"Do you still…?" Piyali hesitated. "Do you still love me?"

The question lingered in the air.

Rahul took a deep breath. "Love doesn't disappear like that," he said slowly. "It stays… even when it hurts."

Piyali closed her eyes, as if those words pierced deeper than anything else.

"I never stopped loving you either," she whispered.

A painful silence followed.

Two hearts, still connected… yet forced apart by fate.

Rahul stepped back slightly. "Then maybe that's our punishment," he said. "To love each other… but never be together."

Piyali shook her head, crying now. "Don't say that. Please don't make it harder."

Rahul smiled faintly. "It's already hard, Piyali. Saying it out loud just makes it real."

She wiped her tears and tried to steady herself. "I just wanted you to know… you were never a mistake in my life. You were the most beautiful part of it."

Rahul's eyes softened. "And you were my entire world."

For a moment, they stood there, holding onto memories instead of each other.

"I should go," Piyali said finally.

Rahul nodded. "Yeah… you should."

But neither of them moved.

It felt like leaving would mean accepting the end.

Piyali took one last step forward and gently held Rahul's hand. The touch sent a familiar warmth through him—a reminder of everything they had lost.

"Goodbye, Rahul," she whispered.

He looked at her, memorizing every detail of her face. "Goodbye, Piyali."

She slowly let go and turned away, walking down the narrow path that led out of his life… again.

Rahul stood there long after she disappeared from sight.

The mist had lifted, but his heart felt heavier than ever.

Some loves are not meant to last forever.

But they never truly end either.

Rahul looked up at the sky and whispered to himself, "Still… I can't forget you."

True love stays forever, even when life separates hearts beyond all hope.
