Chapter 1 - Boni and Kalu

Page 1: Arrogant Boni and Calm Kalu

At one edge of a forest lived a hare named Boni. Boni was known to all the animals of the forest for his speed. But he had a major flaw—he was extremely arrogant. He believed that no one had ever been born on this earth who could defeat him in a race.

On the other hand, in that same forest, lived an old tortoise named Kalu. Kalu was very steady and patient. One day, Boni was standing in the middle of the forest, bragging about his speed in front of everyone. Suddenly, his gaze fell upon Kalu.

Boni said, laughing, "Hey there, brother Kalu! I feel pity seeing your slow pace of walking. Does it take you a whole day just to go one mile?"

The other animals of the forest started laughing. Kalu replied in a calm voice, "Boni, speed is not everything. Patience and perseverance are often much more powerful than speed."

Hearing Kalu's words, Boni burst out laughing! He said, "Perseverance? Those things have no value against speed. If you have the courage, why don't you compete with me in a race?"

Everyone in the forest was surprised. How could a tortoise race against a hare? But Kalu stunned everyone by saying, "Alright Boni, I agree. Tomorrow morning, our race will start from the foot of that hill and end at the old Banyan tree by the riverbank."

Boni said with a disdainful smile, "Be prepared to accept your defeat, Kalu!"

That night, Boni planned to sleep peacefully, knowing that defeating Kalu was child's play for him. Meanwhile, Kalu spent the whole night mentally mapping out how he would reach the destination.

The next morning, all the animals of the forest gathered. Uncle Jackal took the responsibility of the referee. As soon as the whistle was blown, the race began!

Boni vanished in the blink of an eye with his legendary speed. He started running along the forest path, raising clouds of dust. And Kalu? He began moving forward slowly, one step at a time, on his tiny four legs. His speed was very slow, but he had a focus in his eyes and unwavering faith in his heart.

After going some distance, Boni looked back and saw no sign of Kalu. He thought to himself, "Kalu probably hasn't even crossed the starting line yet! What's the harm in resting a bit midway?"

By the side of the path, Boni stopped, seeing a huge carrot field and a shady bush. He thought, "I am tired anyway from running so fast. If I take a little nap, I will win in one single run when Kalu arrives."

Boni ate carrots to his heart's content and lay down comfortably under the shade of the tree. His eyelids became heavy in the cool breeze. He thought he would close his eyes for just five minutes, but that sleep became deeper and deeper.

Meanwhile, Kalu did not stop for a single moment. The sun was rising higher, his body was sweating, but he did not stop. He saw Boni sleeping, but he did not wake him. Very carefully, silently, he passed Boni and moved ahead.

When the sun was about to set, Boni woke up with a start. He sat up quickly. "Oh God! It is very late!" He started running full speed towards the Banyan tree without wasting a single moment.

But reaching near the destination, his eyes widened in shock. He saw that Kalu had already touched the finish line and was sitting calmly. All the animals of the forest were celebrating around Kalu.

Boni stood before Kalu with his head bowed down. Kalu smiled and said, "Slow and steady wins the race."

Moral: Arrogance is the root of a fall, and patience and continuous hard work help fulfill any difficult goal.
