Chapter 155 Reactivation
The crowd looked at each other in disbelief at what was happening before their eyes.
K has now become a completely new, unprogrammed robot.
"No, Dr. Ye, you didn't reset it, did you…" He Liang interjected.
"That's impossible." Ye Jian was also a bit confused. "I haven't connected the system yet; I've just simply reconnected the broken wires."
Everyone watched as the severed arm was reattached.
Ji Feng coughed lightly and continued, "If it needs to be activated for the first time, it means that all its save data, memories, and settings have been cleared. It is unknown whether this data is still stored somewhere, but now it only needs to be reset, which will not affect its later use."
Ye Jian knew it wouldn't affect usability, but clearly everyone didn't want a cold robot; they wanted the original K back.
Ye Jian calmed himself down, connected the computer to K, and then entered the following command: K, tell us what happened? Why do you need to perform the initial activation process?
K's electronic voice remained calm and mechanical, seemingly no different from his previous voice, yet it had a different, unfamiliar feel to it.
"I'm sorry, I cannot provide previous data or event logs. The current system indicates that this is my first launch. Please begin the activation process to unlock more features."
Ye Jian's fingers flew across the keyboard, trying to find a clue through the background data.
"No, all identification information and history have been cleared. It looks like a very thorough system reset. There might be a setting in the factory that automatically resets the system if it is severely damaged by an attack. This is to ensure that our information is not leaked. This is also a consideration for information security by the military."
Everyone was visibly disappointed.
"Then is it impossible to recover?"
"No, if the machine is to be recycled, there must be some way to reactivate the original programs and records. And the fact that it can be reactivated proves that its core chip was not damaged; we just haven't found a way yet." Ji Feng pondered for a long time before stating his conclusion with certainty.
This conclusion has brought new ideas and new hope to everyone.
Ye Jian took a deep breath and tried to remain calm.
"Let's complete the activation process first; at least that will ensure K's basic functions are working. Re-establish contact with the Underground City military, and we'll figure out the rest later."
The activation process went smoothly, and K gradually demonstrated more functions, but his memory of the past remained blank.
Ye Jian and Ji Feng divided the work: Ye Jian was responsible for training K to adapt to the current work content and intensity, while Ji Feng tried to find backup data or any clues that might help K recover his memory.
After Ye Jian contacted the base military through K, he also obtained some corresponding repair solutions, but they had never encountered a situation where the memory could not be recovered.
" Dr. Ye, normally we only need to enter the command code to restore the data and it will be automatically generated. Even if we switch to another machine, we can log in again to use the original data. We have never encountered such a complete clearing of data, or a situation where I need to see the machine in person to find a solution."
"Okay, I understand. Thank you."
"It seems they haven't encountered this situation before either. I'm unable to restore K's original program settings even following the instructions they provided."
Ye Jian announced the news to everyone with some reluctance.
Everyone else looked gloomy and dejected, but K, the person involved, acted as if nothing had happened and continued driving his RV endlessly.
"Forget it, don't be so pessimistic. At least K still exists..." Yu Miaomiao tried to comfort everyone, saying it wasn't a matter of life and death.
"Let's just assume K has temporarily lost his memory, but he is still himself."
"Is he really still himself? A robot, the shell isn't his true self; his memories and the experiences of constantly learning and imitating are what truly make him who he is. And that part of him has vanished. He doesn't even react to Sesame Paste anymore..."
Lu An watched as Sesame Paste's big head rested on K's lap, wagging its tail and waiting to be petted, but after receiving no response, it lowered its tail in disappointment.
This sense of loss swept over everyone in Yu An Squad; everyone felt as if they had lost something, but couldn't quite put their finger on it.
Just as the atmosphere reached its lowest point, K suddenly parked the RV on the side of the road, turned his head to look out the window at the dilapidated, endless highway, and his eyes seemed to have a deeper look than usual.
After a moment, he spoke softly, "Although I don't have the memory of the previous data, I can feel that you are very important to me. Don't worry about me. Is this feeling called anxiety? Or worry? I am willing to find a way to become K in your memories."
Yu Miaomiao and the others exchanged surprised glances; they hadn't expected K to speak up at this moment.
Normally, he only responds after receiving a command and rarely expresses himself independently.
"No, you don't need to change. Just become who you want to be."
Lu An also sat down in the passenger seat, hugged the dejected Sesame Paste, and let it rub against K's palm again: "Look, K, Sesame Paste is your friend. It doesn't care whether you remember it or not, it just hopes that you can still stay by its side, and so do we."
"Everyone, I think I've found it."
Ji Feng's voice came from the rear of the car. He didn't join the conversation, but instead kept searching for possible memory data codes in K's database.
"I noticed that K's hardware design has some non-standard interfaces, which may be used for special maintenance or data exchange. There should be some areas that cannot be publicly accessed. I don't know why this robot has such a blocked area. It is completely different from the design draft provided by the military. But that's not the point. The point is that after I tried to analyze it, I found that a set of data was a bit suspicious."
The crowd gathered around and saw lines of code flashing on the screen, seemingly revealing the existence of a hidden partition.
"There's an encrypted data module here, labeled 'Emergency Reboot Resource,' which looks like what we've been looking for."
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's start the program!"
He Liang's eyes lit up, feeling that he was about to witness the moment when K regained his memory.
"Not yet. Our existing equipment cannot complete the full decryption command operation. If we force it, it may trigger the next self-destruct program."
Ji Feng's words poured cold water on everyone's enthusiasm once again.
"But at least it proves that there is hope for K to recover his memories."
This news is already good news for Yu Miaomiao.
"Yes, the problem is with the equipment right now. Once we rejoin the base, we can use the military's equipment for repairs, and then there shouldn't be any issues."
Lu An also felt that this was not a big deal; as long as there was still a solution, it wasn't a dead end.
"You may be disappointed, but the military doesn't have the equipment to perform such high-precision maintenance. Such large equipment is usually only purchased by laboratories. The initial tsunami took away almost everything, so it's hard to find equipment that is still functioning normally."
