Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: shifting sides

The calm didn't last.

It never really does.

At first, everything felt manageable. Classes had fully resumed, assignments were piling up, and the dorm had settled into a routine that almost felt normal. Almost. Mia was her usual lively self, Marvel kept her distance—at least on the surface—and I tried to focus on my own life without letting everything around me get into my head.

But something was shifting. Slowly. Quietly.

And I could feel it.

That afternoon, I noticed something I hadn't paid attention to before—Cassie hadn't been around much. She was always quiet, always in her own space, but now that I thought about it… she had barely been in the room at all.

When she finally returned later that evening, she looked… different.

Tired.

Not the normal kind of tired, but the kind that sat heavily in her eyes. She dropped her bag quietly and sat on her bed without saying a word.

I watched her for a moment before speaking. "Cassie… are you okay?"

She looked up, slightly startled, as if she wasn't expecting anyone to notice. "Yeah… I'm fine," she said quickly. Too quickly.

I frowned. Something didn't feel right.

"Have you eaten?" I asked.

There was a pause. A small one, but enough.

"No," she admitted softly.

That was all I needed to hear. Without saying anything else, I grabbed my slippers and headed downstairs to get food. It wasn't much, just something simple from the cafeteria, but when I handed it to her, the look on her face caught me off guard.

Relief.

Gratitude.

"Thank you," she said quietly, almost like she meant more than just the food.

As she ate, slowly at first, then with more ease, she explained. "I spent most of my money already… that's why I've been out a lot. Just trying to manage."

My chest tightened a little. I hadn't expected that.

"You could have said something," I said gently.

She shrugged. "I don't like asking."

I nodded. I understood that more than I wanted to admit.

For a while, we sat in silence, the kind that wasn't uncomfortable. Just… real.

Then, out of nowhere, Cassie spoke again.

"You should be careful."

I turned to her. "Careful about what?"

She hesitated, glancing briefly toward Marvel's empty bed before lowering her voice.

"Marvel," she said simply.

My heart skipped. "What about her?"

Cassie took a deep breath. "Sometimes… the way she talks about you. It's not direct, but… it's there. You might not notice it, but I do."

I felt a chill run through me.

"What does she say?"

Cassie shook her head slightly. "Nothing you can hold onto. Just… little things. Tone. Comments. The way she laughs after certain sentences."

I swallowed.

So it wasn't just in my head.

"I'm not saying she's planning anything," Cassie added quickly. "Just… don't be too comfortable."

Her words settled heavily in my mind.

That night, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

At first, I tried to brush it off. Maybe Cassie was overthinking. Maybe I was. Maybe everything really was fine, and I was just letting small things get to me.

But then… I started noticing something else.

Mia and Marvel.

They were getting close.

Too close.

At first, it was harmless—just conversations, laughter, small jokes. Mia had always been friendly, and Marvel had this way of blending in when she wanted to. It didn't seem like a big deal.

But then it became more.

They started sitting together more often. Whispering. Laughing at things I wasn't part of.

And one night… it crossed a line I couldn't ignore.

I couldn't sleep.

I don't know why—maybe it was Cassie's words, maybe it was the tension I kept pretending wasn't there. I turned on my bed, adjusting my pillow, trying to force myself to rest.

Then I heard it.

Voices.

Soft at first, then clearer.

Mia and Marvel.

I opened my eyes slowly, my heart already starting to race.

They were on the same bed.

Marvel's bed.

Talking. Laughing. Whispering like they shared secrets.

I stayed still, not wanting them to know I was awake.

"…she doesn't even notice," Marvel said softly, her voice laced with something I couldn't quite place.

Mia laughed. "You're actually bad."

"I'm just saying," Marvel replied. "Some people are too calm for their own good."

My chest tightened.

Were they talking about me?

I couldn't be sure. And yet… it felt like they were.

I turned slightly, my back facing them, my eyes wide open in the darkness. I wanted to sit up, to say something, to stop whatever was happening—but I couldn't.

Mia had the right to have her own friends.

I couldn't control that.

But still… it hurt.

Not because she was close to Marvel, but because it felt like I was slowly being pushed out of a space I once felt comfortable in.

The laughter continued, soft but sharp enough to reach me. Every word, every giggle, every whisper made it harder to ignore the feeling building in my chest.

Isolation.

That was the word.

I lay there, pretending to sleep, while my thoughts raced uncontrollably. Cassie's warning echoed in my head.

"Don't be too comfortable."

And for the first time since everything began, I felt it clearly—

This wasn't just about the past anymore.

Something was changing.

Something I didn't fully understand yet.

And whatever it was…

I had a feeling it wasn't going to end well.

From the tension.

From the overthinking.

From everything.

I stood in front of the mirror longer than usual, adjusting my outfit, fixing my hair, making sure everything sat just right. It wasn't for anyone in particular—or at least, that's what I told myself—but deep down, I knew I just wanted to feel like myself again.

Normal.

Confident.

Unaffected.

When Sami texted me, asking if I could come out, I didn't hesitate this time.

We hadn't seen each other since that night.

And maybe… I missed him too.

We met at the field, where the evening breeze carried a calmness that the dorm no longer had. The grass stretched out endlessly, students scattered in small groups, laughter echoing faintly in the distance. It felt peaceful.

Sami smiled the moment he saw me.

"Wow," he said softly, looking me over in a way that made my cheeks warm. "You look… really good."

I tried not to smile too much. "I always do."

He laughed, stepping closer. "I missed you."

Something about the way he said it—low, sincere, almost like he had been holding it in—made my heart skip.

"I missed you too," I admitted quietly.

We sat down on the grass at first, talking about random things, laughing like we used to. For a moment, it felt like everything was okay again. Like nothing complicated existed outside of that space.

Then, after a while, Sami shifted slightly and looked at me.

"Come here," he said, patting his lap playfully.

I raised an eyebrow. "Sami…"

"Just come," he insisted, smiling.

I hesitated for a second before moving closer and sitting carefully on his lap. His arms wrapped loosely around my waist, and I felt the warmth of him instantly.

But just as quickly… I stiffened.

Something felt off.

I froze for a second, my body reacting before my mind could fully process it, and immediately stood up.

Sami blinked, then suddenly burst into laughter.

"What?" I asked, slightly embarrassed.

He shook his head, still laughing softly. "Relax, Nuella," he said, pulling me back gently. "It just means I've missed you."

I frowned slightly, trying to process what he meant.

"My body reacts to you," he added more quietly, his tone softer now. "That's all."

My cheeks flushed instantly, and I looked away, not knowing what to say. Part of me felt shy, another part… strangely aware of the closeness between us.

He tilted his head, watching my reaction with a small smile. "You're overthinking again."

"Maybe," I muttered.

He reached for my hand, his thumb brushing gently over my fingers. "You don't have to. Not with me."

I exhaled slowly, letting the moment settle. The tension I had been carrying didn't disappear completely, but it softened. Just enough for me to relax again.

For a while, we stayed like that—close, quiet, comfortable.

In that moment, I let myself believe everything was fine. I let myself forget the whispers, the tension, the drama in the dorm. I let myself think that maybe… just maybe… I could finally relax.

Then, a soft beep broke the calm.

Sami's phone lit up beside us.

Curious, I glanced at the screen—and my heart froze.

The name that popped up was Marvel.

My chest tightened.

They were still talking.

All the reassurances, the smiles, the laughter—it felt heavier now. Somehow, heavier and wrong.

And just like that, the fragile bubble of peace I had built… shattered.
