Chapter 5: The Academy of the Unseen

The transition from the silver forest to the Academy was not just a change of scenery; it was a violent assault on the senses. The air here was thin, sharp with the ozone of a thousand active enchantments and the cloying sweetness of incense that burned in braziers of floating brass.

Kaelen led Akira through a hallway that felt as if it had been carved from the interior of a giant diamond. The walls were translucent, showing glimpses of other dimensions—swirling nebulae, oceans of liquid gold, and forests made of glass. Students in robes of every imaginable color hurried past, their eyes fixed on floating scrolls or whispering to small, glowing familiar spirits that hovered around their shoulders.

"Eyes down," Kaelen's voice was a low vibration in her ear. "In this place, curiosity is a luxury for the powerful. For someone like you, it is an admission of guilt."

Akira pulled her hood lower. Her oversized boots made a dull, rhythmic thud against the crystalline floor, a sound that felt dangerously out of place amidst the soft, rhythmic chanting that echoed through the halls. She felt like a smudge of grease on a pristine silk gown.

They reached a set of double doors forged from "Sun-Steel," a metal that glowed with a heatless, white light. The doors didn't have handles; instead, two massive stone statues of winged lions guarded the entrance. As Kaelen approached, the statues' stone eyes ignited with a cold, blue flame.

"State your intent, High Mage Kaelen," the stone lions spoke in unison, their voices sounding like grinding boulders.

"I bring a ward. A stray spark from the southern fringes," Kaelen replied, his voice devoid of any warmth. "She is here for the Initiation of the Grimoire."

The lions turned their frozen gazes toward Akira. She felt a cold shiver run down her spine, a sensation of being peeled open and inspected by something ancient and uncaring. After a heartbeat that felt like an eternity, the doors swung inward with a silent, heavy grace.

The Great Hall of the Academy was a chamber that defied human comprehension. It was a cathedral of light, with a ceiling so high it was obscured by a swirling, artificial galaxy of stars. At the far end, seated on a throne of woven obsidian and starlight, was the Headmaster—a woman known only as Archmage Valeska.

Her skin was the color of ebony, and her hair wasn't hair at all, but a flowing cascade of literal white flames that licked the air around her head. Her eyes were solid gold, without pupils, reflecting everything and nothing at once.

"Kaelen," Valeska's voice boomed, vibrating in the very marrow of Akira's bones. "You return from your self-imposed exile with a... pet? Explain this unrefined creature."

Kaelen bowed, but his back remained stiff. "She is a 'Silence-Walker', Archmage. I found her near the veil. She possesses a minor affinity for the cold—a flickering spark, nothing more. But the laws state that all who cross must be tested."

"A minor spark," Valeska repeated, her golden eyes narrowing as they landed on Akira. "She looks like she was dragged through a coal pit. She smells of the mud and the rot of the Silence."

"Which is why she needs the discipline of the Academy," Kaelen countered smoothly.

Valeska snapped her fingers. From a pedestal behind her, a heavy, iron-bound book began to float. It was the Grimoire of Truth, an ancient artifact that could read the very essence of a person's soul. It drifted toward Akira, its leather cover groaning like a living thing.

"Place your hand upon the leather, girl," Valeska commanded. "If you are truly a minor mage, the book will show us a spark of frost. If you are a lie... the book will scream."

Akira looked at Kaelen. His face was a mask of indifference, but she saw the slight tightening of his jaw. Building the silver cage, he had told her. She closed her eyes and reached inward, finding that dark, roiling ocean of violet fire that lived inside her. She imagined Kaelen's silver light wrapping around it, layer after layer, until the darkness was buried under a mountain of ice.

Her palm touched the cold, rough leather of the Grimoire.

For a moment, there was absolute silence. Then, the book began to vibrate. A low, guttural growl emitted from the pages, and a wind whipped through the hall, tearing at Akira's hair and hood. The stars in the ceiling began to swirl violently.

Suppress it! Kaelen's voice echoed in her mind. If it breaks out, we both burn!

Akira gritted her teeth so hard she felt her molars crack. She poured every ounce of her will into the "ice," forcing the violet fire into a tiny, suffocating corner of her heart.

The howling wind suddenly died. The book stopped vibrating. On the blank cover of the Grimoire, a single, glowing rune appeared. It was the symbol for 'Frost'—but it was dim, flickering, and pathetically small.

A wave of laughter erupted from the students who had gathered in the shadows of the hall.

"A peasant who can barely chill a glass of wine!" a tall boy with gold-trimmed robes sneered, his voice dripping with aristocratic disdain. "Kaelen, you brought us a servant, not a student."

Valeska remained silent, her golden eyes fixed on Akira for a long, uncomfortable moment. She sensed the disharmony, the echo of something much larger, but the Grimoire had spoken.

"She stays," Valeska finally said, her voice cold. "But she will be placed in the lowest tier. She will eat with the laborers and sleep in the Drafty Towers. Kaelen, she is your responsibility. If she fails the first trial—the Labyrinth of Echoes—she will be cast into the Cloud-Sea without a second thought. Do you understand?"

"Perfectly," Kaelen said, his voice as sharp as a blade.

As they walked out of the hall, Akira felt the weight of a thousand mocking eyes on her back. She didn't care. The violet fire was still there, hidden behind the ice, and it was hungrier than ever.
