Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – Shadows and New Eyes

The morning mist curled around the stone pathways of God's Sanctuary, softening the jagged edges of the hunting grounds. Veer Raheja adjusted the Sacred Black Beetle armor over his shoulders, feeling the familiar surge of power it granted. Each movement felt fluid, instinctive—he had long stopped thinking of the armor as a mere shell; it was part of him now, amplifying reflexes and strength beyond ordinary limits.

"System: Daily Mission – Beginner Hunt Active. Target: Mutant Mantises. Reward: Experience Points and Beast Soul Fragments," a calm, neutral notification echoed in Veer's mind. Unlike the flashy alerts he had seen in games or stories, this system's voice was precise, almost mechanical, yet perfectly clear. He didn't need to speak; the system simply relayed, and he understood.

Veer's Ass Freak persona was already stirring whispers in the Sanctuary. Hunters in nearby shelters had begun talking about a new mysterious contender: agile, precise, and merciless in combat. No one suspected that the boy under the armor and mask was merely fifteen years old, still learning, still growing.

He focused on the task at hand. Mutant mantises emerged from the underbrush, their limbs slicing the air with deadly intent. Veer pivoted and struck with the beetle shield, its reinforced edges crushing claws and snapping exoskeletons alike. Every movement was measured, deliberate—a dance honed over days of observation and battles. The mantises fell, one by one, feeding his growth and the pulse of the Sacred Black Beetle's black crystal embedded in his chestplate.

Ping. Another system notification:

"Beast Soul Absorbed: Mutant Mantis. Experience Gained: +42. Total Progress Toward Evolution: 11%."

The crystal hummed faintly, syncing with Veer's heartbeat. Each kill, each precise strike, was feeding not just his body but the unseen power of Shadow Talon lurking beneath. Ass Freak was public; Shadow Talon was private—a force that, for now, even he barely comprehended.

A flicker in the treeline drew Veer's gaze. Nandini, a girl with sharp eyes and a quiet aura, crouched behind a boulder. Her expression was unreadable, a mix of curiosity and calculation. Veer recognized the type immediately: observer. Not one to interfere directly yet, she measured him, analyzing skill and style.

"System: Observation Detected. Unknown Female Presence. Recommend Caution and Awareness," the notification chimed softly. Veer's lips curled into a faint smile. The Sanctuary was as much a game of perception as of skill, and he had always enjoyed a challenge.

The mutant mantises had been replaced by a larger target—a berserk creature reported near the glade's edge. Its hide was mottled and thick, its claws glistening with poison. Veer shifted, beetle armor enhancing each motion. Ass Freak precision guided his strikes, while Shadow Talon reflexes allowed him to anticipate the creature's deadly swipes.

Wham! The berserk creature crashed against the ground as Veer's shield met claw with calculated force. System notification:

"Critical Strike! Berserk Creature Killed. Beast Soul Gained: +85 XP. Mutation Potential Rising."

Veer extracted a tiny fragment of black crystal from the creature's remains, feeling the familiar resonance pulse through him. It whispered of possibilities—new techniques, faster reflexes, sharper instincts. Shadow Talon's power was growing, layer by layer, hidden beneath the surface.

While he packed up the crystal and prepared to return to his temporary shelter, he noticed movement nearby. Three figures—new arrivals—watched from a distance. Kavya, with her fiery aura, and Rhea, quiet and calculating, remained partially concealed behind the rocks. Nandini, previously observed, stepped slightly forward, still hidden but more attentive now.

Veer didn't approach. He wasn't ready for conversation, and these girls weren't here for friendship—they were here for observation. Each of them carried potential and danger, their own styles and abilities waiting to unfold. System notification:

"Potential Allies or Rivals Identified. Recommendation: Record Behaviors for Future Reference."

The day passed in a rhythm of training, observation, and silent evaluation. Veer adjusted his stance, performed precision strikes, and took notes in his mind of each encounter. The Sanctuary tested not just strength but composure, intelligence, and adaptability. Ass Freak earned fame in whispers and rumors, yet Shadow Talon remained a shadow even to the closest eyes.

As dusk fell, Veer ventured toward a rocky outcrop overlooking the glade. A rare sight—a golden phoenix-like mutant—hovered over a stream below. Its presence was majestic and dangerous. The system notification pulsed once:

"Rare Creature Detected. Potential Beast Soul: High. Reward: Significant Experience and Power Stone."

Veer crouched in the shadows, shield ready, senses heightened. He studied the creature's pattern, timing each movement, waiting for the perfect moment. With a single, flawless strike, he incapacitated the beast, extracting a crystal embedded in its chest.

Ping.

"Beast Soul Absorbed: Rare Creature. Experience +150. Mutation Potential Rising: 20%."

A soft rustle behind him made Veer spin—but no one was there. Or so it seemed. A pair of eyes, hidden in darkness, observed every move. The Sanctuary had many secrets, and Veer's reputation as Ass Freak only attracted more attention. The whispers would grow, the observers would multiply, and yet, the truth of Shadow Talon would remain untouched, a secret even to those who admired—or feared—Ass Freak.

Veer returned to his shelter, exhausted but satisfied. Each encounter had built not just strength but reputation. Each crystal absorbed added a layer of potential. And somewhere, hidden in the crowd of spectators, female leads had begun their silent watch. They didn't know the full story, but the name Ass Freak carried weight. Shadow Talon would remain veiled, waiting for the moment to emerge.

Before sleep, Veer checked the system once more. Notifications awaited—missions, challenges, and hints of rewards. The black crystal's pulse in his palm reminded him that growth was constant. One day, Ass Freak would be revealed as Shadow Talon, and the Sanctuary would finally know the boy who moved like a shadow, struck like lightning, and hid more than anyone could guess.

Veer smiled faintly. For now, the legend was only beginning. And as long as the eyes of Nandini, Kavya, Rhea, and the others watched, the story was far from over.
