Chapter 11: Recovery and Revelation
Recap: Fang Yuan defeated Shang Xin Yue using fusion with the mysterious creature, earning his second badge. Exhausted, he collapsed in the forest outside Shang Clan City.
---
Fang Yuan woke to the sound of water.
He lay on his back, the forest canopy shifting above him, sunlight filtering through the leaves in broken patterns. His body ached—every muscle, every bone, every joint screaming in protest. He tried to move, and his arms refused to respond.
I overdid it. The fusion… it drained me more than I thought.
He lay still, letting his breathing slow, his mind cataloguing the damage. His Subjects were all in their spheres, their vitals weak but stable. The Lotus Gu had survived the hydro pump, barely. The Vine Gu's tendrils were regrowing. The Rock Skin Gu's plates were cracked but healing. The White Boar Gu was exhausted from its charge. The Wind Bird Gu's feathers were singed. The Fire Cricket Gu's glow was dim. And the Moonlight Gu… the Moonlight Gu was unchanged. Its light was steady, calm, as if nothing had happened.
My first capture. My weakest. And yet, when I fused with the creature, its light changed. Became something else.
He reached into his pocket and touched the cracked stone. It was cold now, silent. The creature's presence was gone—or sleeping. He couldn't tell.
What are you? What did you do to me?
He forced himself to sit up. The forest spun around him, and he waited for it to settle. His hands were scraped, his robes torn, but he was alive. That was all that mattered.
He opened his Status screen.
TRAINER: Fang Yuan
Rank: 1 (Mortal)
Badges: 2/8
Primeval Stones: 153
Active Subjects: 9/18
Total Captures: 9
Subjects: Moonlight Gu, Vine Gu, Rock Skin Gu, White Boar Gu, Wind Bird Gu, Fire Cricket Gu, Water Flea Gu x3, Lotus Gu.
Fusion Partner: ?? (Dormant)
Fusion Cooldown: 7 days
Seven days. I can't fuse again for a week. That's fine. I need time to recover. Time to train. Time to plan.
He pulled out the two badges. The silver moon of Gu Yue. The blue teardrop of Shang. Two keys. Six to go.
The third Gym Leader is in the Tie Clan territory. A Rank 4 Earth specialist. His Gu are Rock and Steel types. Strong against physical attacks. Weak against Water and Fighting.
He looked at his Subjects. Water Flea Gu were Rank 1, too weak to matter. White Boar Gu was Normal type—neutral against Rock. No Fighting types at all.
I need more. A Water type at Rank 2 or higher. A Fighting type, if I can find one. And I need to evolve some of my Subjects. Now that evolution stones are unlocked…
He opened the Shop. The Evolution Stones section was now visible, the stones priced at 3 Immortal Essence Stones each. He had no IES, only primeval stones. But there was a new option he hadn't noticed before.
[Conversion: Primeval Stones → Immortal Essence Stones]
Rate: 100 PS = 1 IES
One hundred stones for a single IES. Three IES for one evolution stone. Three hundred stones for one evolution.
He had 153 stones. Not enough.
I need more captures. More battles. More stones.
He stood, his legs shaking. The forest was quiet, the morning sun warm on his face. Shang Clan City was behind him. Ahead, the road to Tie Clan territory stretched across the plains.
Three days' walk. I can capture along the way. Train. Recover.
He started walking.
---
The first day was slow.
His body was still weak from the fusion, and his Subjects needed rest. He walked at a leisurely pace, stopping often to rest, to eat, to check his spheres. The forest gave way to farmland, then to grassland, then to rocky hills.
By evening, he had captured two new Subjects: a Sandshrew Gu (Ground type, Rank 1) in the hills, and a Geodude Gu (Rock type, Rank 1) near a stream. His primeval stones rose to 173.
He made camp beneath a rocky overhang, released his Subjects, and let them feed. The Moonlight Gu hovered near his shoulder, its light steady. The Lotus Gu's petals were still torn, but they were regrowing. The White Boar Gu lay in the grass, snoring.
He sat against a rock and pulled out the cracked stone. It was warm again, pulsing faintly. The creature's presence stirred, a whisper at the edge of his thoughts.
You're awake.
Barely. The creature's voice was weaker than before, like a voice from far away. The fusion cost me more than I expected. I need time to recover.
Seven days.
Yes. Use them wisely. The next Gym Leader will not be as forgiving as the last.
Fang Yuan tucked the stone back into his pocket. "What are you?" he asked aloud. "What are you really?"
The creature was silent for a long moment. Then, slowly, it began to speak.
I am a fragment. A remnant. A piece of something that existed before the system, before the Gu, before this world was shaped. I was called many things by those who found me. Spirit. Demon. God. None of them were true.
What were you?
I was a tool. A weapon. A key to a door that should never have been opened. The system was created to seal that door. To keep what lies behind it from escaping. But I… I was left behind. A stray piece of a broken lock.
Fang Yuan's eyes narrowed. "And now? What are you now?"
I am yours. For now. Use me, and I will help you break the system's chains. But be warned, little demon. Every time you use me, the door opens a little wider. And something on the other side is waiting.
Fang Yuan said nothing. He had heard warnings before. He had ignored them all.
What's on the other side?
Something older than Heaven's Will. Something that devoured worlds before the Gu existed. Something that the system was built to contain.
And if it escapes?
Then there will be nothing left to conquer.
The creature's presence faded, leaving Fang Yuan alone with his thoughts.
He stared at the fire, his face blank. A door. A lock. A world-devouring entity waiting on the other side. It should have terrified him. Instead, it made him smile.
If there's something that can destroy the system, then it can destroy the chains binding me. And if it escapes… I'll deal with it then.
He lay back and closed his eyes.
---
The next day, he reached Tie Clan territory.
The landscape had changed. The rolling grasslands gave way to rocky badlands, the soil red and hard. Mountains rose in the distance, their peaks capped with snow. And everywhere, the red banners of the Tie Clan snapped in the wind.
He found a small village at the edge of the territory—a mining settlement, its buildings built from stone, its streets dusty. He rented a room at an inn, paid with primeval stones, and asked the innkeeper about the Gym Leader.
"Tie Shan," the innkeeper said, spitting into the dust. "He's the clan leader. Rank 4 Earth specialist. His Gu are Rock and Steel. They say he's never lost a match in thirty years."
"Where can I find him?"
The innkeeper laughed. "You want to challenge him? You and every other fool who comes through here. He lives in the fortress at the mountain's base. But he only accepts challenges from those who've proven themselves."
"How do I prove myself?"
The innkeeper shrugged. "There's a trial. A cave in the mountains, filled with Rock Gu. Clear it, and you earn the right to face him." He leaned closer. "But no one's cleared it in five years. The last man who tried came out without his Gu. Or his mind."
Fang Yuan paid for three nights and went to his room.
---
That night, he prepared.
He laid out his Pokeballs on the bed. Eleven Subjects now—he had captured two more on the way, a Magnemite Gu (Electric/Steel, Rank 1) and a Rhyhorn Gu (Ground/Rock, Rank 2). His primeval stones were at 201.
The cave trial. Rock Gu. Probably Rank 1 and Rank 2. My Water Flea Gu and Lotus Gu will be strong against them. But I need more.
He opened the Shop and looked at the new items unlocked by his second badge.
Evolution Stones – 3 IES each (300 PS conversion)
New Items Unlocked:
· Exp. Share – 80 PS – Equipped Subject gains experience even if not used in battle.
· Focus Sash – 60 PS – Prevents fainting from a single lethal blow.
· Choice Band – 80 PS – Increases attack but locks the Subject into one move.
· Ability Capsule – 120 PS – Changes a Subject's ability. (Locked: 5 Badges)
He didn't have enough for evolution stones, but he could afford an Exp. Share and a Focus Sash. He bought both, his stones dropping to 61.
He attached the Exp. Share to his Lotus Gu. It needed to grow. It would be his main weapon in the cave. The Focus Sash he gave to his White Boar Gu. If it could survive one lethal blow, it could turn the tide of any battle.
He lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling.
Tomorrow, I clear the cave. Then I challenge Tie Shan. Then the third badge.
He reached into his pocket and touched the cracked stone. It was warm, pulsing.
Four days until fusion recovers. I'll need it for the Gym Leader.
You'll need more than me, the creature whispered. Tie Shan is stronger than Shang Xin Yue. His Gu are harder, his defense absolute. You'll need to break him before he crushes you.
Fang Yuan closed his eyes. "I've broken stronger men than him."
Have you?
He didn't answer. He slept.
