Chapter 5 - Make Him Beg

Daniel Hayes didn't sleep that night.

Not even for a minute.

The city lights flickered outside his penthouse windows, but for the first time in years, they brought him no comfort.

Only pressure.

Only questions.

Only one name—

Emily Carter.

By morning, Hayes Corporation had already taken another hit.

Two minor investors pulled out.

Stock down 4%.

Not catastrophic.

Not yet.

But enough to send a message.

A warning.

Daniel stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his tie.

Perfect.

Controlled.

Untouchable.

That's who he was.

That's who he had to be.

Even now.

"Your car is ready, sir," his assistant said.

Daniel nodded.

"Let's go."

Carter Holdings Tower.

This time—

Daniel wasn't the one waiting.

As his car pulled up, he looked up at the building.

Tall.

Dominant.

Imposing.

It didn't feel like just another corporate office anymore.

It felt like…

territory.

Hers.

Inside, everything was different from his own company.

Sharper.

More controlled.

More… powerful.

Employees moved with precision.

Security was tighter.

Even the air felt heavier.

"Mr. Hayes," a receptionist greeted politely. "Miss Carter is expecting you."

Of course she was.

Daniel was escorted to the top floor.

Private elevator.

No delays.

No waiting.

But still—

It felt like he was the one being summoned.

The doors opened.

And there she was.

Emily Carter stood near the window, sunlight outlining her silhouette.

She didn't turn immediately.

Didn't rush.

Didn't acknowledge him.

She simply…

let him stand there.

For a few seconds—

Daniel Hayes waited.

Then—

"Enjoying the view?"

Her voice was calm.

Controlled.

Unfamiliar.

Emily turned slowly.

And this time—

There was no trace of the woman he once knew.

No softness.

No hesitation.

Only presence.

Only power.

"Cut the act," Daniel said, stepping forward. "We need to talk."

Emily raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Do we?"

The question hit harder than expected.

Daniel stopped a few steps from her desk.

"This ends now," he said firmly. "Whatever you're trying to do—pulling investors, manipulating the market—it stops."

Emily walked past him.

Unhurried.

Then took her seat behind the desk.

Her desk.

"And why," she asked, folding her hands calmly, "would I do that?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Because this isn't a game."

Emily tilted her head slightly.

"You're right," she said softly.

"It's not."

Silence.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Daniel leaned forward slightly, his voice lowering.

"Emily," he said, trying to regain control of the conversation, "whatever happened between us… that's personal. Don't mix it with business."

For a brief second—

Something flickered in her eyes.

Then disappeared.

"Personal?" she repeated.

Her lips curved faintly.

Not a smile.

Something colder.

"You divorced me," she said calmly."In public."

A pause.

"You called me convenient."

Another pause.

"You replaced me."

Each word landed with precision.

No emotion.

Just facts.

Daniel straightened.

"That's not the point."

Emily's gaze sharpened.

"It is the only point."

Silence again.

But this time—

It wasn't balanced.

Emily leaned forward slightly.

"You built your empire on control," she said."On power."

Her eyes locked onto his.

"So did I."

Daniel felt it then.

That shift.

That imbalance.

"You want this to stop?" Emily continued.

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he already knew—

There was a condition.

Emily reached into a drawer.

Pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

"Sign this," she said.

Daniel frowned.

"What is this?"

"Read it."

He picked it up.

And as his eyes moved across the page—

His expression darkened instantly.

"Are you serious?" he said sharply.

It was a contract.

A brutal one.

Carter Holdings would continue its support—

But—

Hayes Corporation would become a dependent subsidiary.

Decision-making power?

Reduced.

Profit share?

Controlled.

Authority?

Gone.

"You're asking me to hand over my company," Daniel said coldly.

Emily didn't react.

"I'm offering you survival."

The words hit.

Hard.

Daniel let out a short laugh.

"You think I'm going to agree to this?"

Emily leaned back slightly.

Calm.

Unbothered.

"No," she said.

"I think you'll refuse."

A pause.

"And then," she continued, "I'll withdraw completely."

Her voice dropped slightly.

"And within a month… your company will collapse."

Silence.

Daniel stared at her.

Trying to find a crack.

A weakness.

Anything.

But there was nothing.

Because this—

Was no longer the woman he had controlled.

This was someone else.

"Why are you doing this?" he asked finally.

Not angrily.

Not arrogantly.

Just—

Trying to understand.

Emily's expression didn't change.

"Because I can," she said.

And that—

Was worse than anything else.

Daniel looked down at the contract again.

His grip tightened.

His mind raced.

Options.

Strategies.

Damage control.

But every path led back to the same place.

Her.

He placed the document back on the table.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"I don't beg," he said.

Emily met his gaze.

Steady.

Unshaken.

"You will," she replied.

A pause.

Then—

She stood.

"This meeting is over."

Daniel didn't move immediately.

Because for the first time in his life—

He didn't know what his next move was.

And that terrified him.

As he turned to leave—

Emily's voice stopped him.

"Daniel."

He paused.

"You said you'd never regret it."

A beat.

"Let's see how long that lasts."

He didn't turn back.

Didn't respond.

Because something inside him—

Had already started to crack.

And Emily knew it.

Back at the window—

She watched him leave.

Not with satisfaction.

Not yet.

This wasn't the end.

This was just—

The beginning.
