Chapter 1 - A life too heavy

THE PENCIL

Chapter 1:

The morning sun crept through the cracked window, landing softly on Ava Carter's face.

But there was nothing soft about her life.

"Ava… are you awake?" her mother's tired voice called from the other room.

Ava opened her eyes slowly, staring at the ceiling. For a moment, she wished she could stay there—just for a little longer. Just a few more seconds without thinking about everything waiting for her.

"I'm up," she replied quietly.

She pushed herself out of bed, her feet touching the cold floor. The house was silent… too silent for a place filled with so many people.

When she stepped into the living room, the reality of her life stood in front of her—just like it did every day.

Her father sat in the corner, motionless, his legs covered with a thin blanket. Once strong, once full of life… now unable to walk.

Her grandmother coughed softly on the couch, her body weak from illness. Beside her, her grandfather lay resting, his breathing uneven.

And in the small kitchen, her mother stood, staring into an empty pot.

Empty.

Again.

Ava swallowed hard. "There's… nothing?" she asked, even though she already knew the answer.

Her mother shook her head slowly. "I tried yesterday. No one is hiring."

Ava clenched her fists.

No one is hiring.

Those words again.

Always those words.

Her younger brother walked in, rubbing his eyes. "Sis… is there breakfast?"

Ava forced a smile.

"Not yet," she said gently. "But I'll figure something out."

Figure something out.

She always said that.

But how…?

Later that morning, Ava walked through the dusty streets of the town, her heart heavy but determined.

Shop after shop.

Door after door.

Rejection after rejection.

"We're not hiring."

"You're too young."

"Come back when you're older."

By the time the sun stood high in the sky, her legs were weak, and her hope was even weaker.

She stopped walking.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

"God… please," she whispered under her breath. "Just help me. I can't do this anymore."

Her voice cracked.

For the first time in a long time… Ava felt like giving up.

She turned into a quiet alley, needing space—needing silence.

That's when she saw it.

A pencil.

Lying on the ground.

Old… but strange.

It didn't look broken. It didn't look ordinary either. Something about it felt… different.

Ava frowned slightly and picked it up.

"Who would just leave a pencil here?" she muttered.

For a moment, she just stared at it.

Then she shook her head lightly. "It's just a pencil, Ava. Don't be weird."

She slipped it into her pocket and started walking home.

She had no idea…

That simple pencil…

Was about to change everything.
