Chapter 100 - The Formation Again

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED

### The Formation Again

The Shadow Sect agents saw them coming down the ridge.

Forty-three people saw three people descending from the mountain pass and the specific quality of that observation produced a pause in the reorganization that Jian Yu was counting on.

Not confusion. Assessment.

Three people. Three swords visible. One sword with a color that had no name.

The Lost Blade.

He counted ten of the forty-three agents shift their attention fully toward him. The ones who knew what they were looking at. He counted seven more shift partially. Seventeen total who understood the situation had just changed.

Good.

He did not slow his pace.

He reached the valley floor and walked toward the formation with the specific directness of someone who knew exactly where they were going and was not considering alternatives.

The Shadow Sect agents did not move.

He walked between two of the nine standing stones.

The formation received him immediately.

The vein concentration expanded around him the way it had expanded during the combination — more of the same medium, more demanding of attention, the spiritual energy present in a way that was palpable rather than ambient. The Lost Blade brightened fully. Not the active application. Just recognition.

The formation knew him.

Seven Ice Sect cultivators looked at him.

Shen Hua was at the central platform. Forty years old. The bearing of someone who had spent a career in difficult postings and had decided long ago that difficult was simply the default condition of useful work. She looked at the Lost Blade.

"The wielder," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"You read the archive," she said.

"You read it too," he said.

"Six months," she said. "Every section I could find." She looked at the northern entrance where the Shadow Sect agents had resumed their reorganization. "They are going to split. East approach in approximately eight minutes."

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"The amplification," she said. "What you can do in here — the domain you have. I read the cascade data section."

"Yes," he said.

"What does it change," she said.

He looked at the formation. At the nine standing stones. At the platform. At the vein concentration that the domain was reading with the precision of the second reading phase — every detail, every frequency, the complete picture of what the formation could amplify.

He had combined five swords here.

He had stood in the center of this and let something very large move through him.

He understood this formation the way he understood the crack in his dantian — not as an obstacle, as a mechanism.

"I can direct the domain's frequency outward from the formation's geometry," he said. "The stones focus the output. Not toward the platform. Outward. The formation was built to amplify inward. I can reverse that."

Shen Hua looked at him.

"An outward projection," she said.

"Yes," he said. "The vein concentration amplified through the Lost Blade's domain extended outward through the formation's geometric focusing structure. Not combat technique. The between quality. Extended outward at amplified range."

"What does that produce," she said.

He thought about what the between was. The space where different things met. The crack. The adapted portion. The specific quality that found pathways through breaks rather than around them.

"It finds the breaks in their formation," he said. "Not their cultivation. Their coordination. Their specific arrangement. It reads the gaps." He paused. "And gives that reading to everyone in the formation."

Shen Hua looked at her six people.

She looked at the northern entrance.

"Eight minutes," she said.

"Less now," Lin Mei said. She was at the formation's eastern edge. "Seven."

Shen Hua looked at Jian Yu.

"Do it," she said.

He stepped onto the platform.

The vein concentration met him the way it had met him before the combination — recognizing, amplifying. But this time he was not receiving. He was directing.

He extended the domain.

Twelve breaths. The second reading phase. Full resolution.

He let the between reach outward through the formation's geometry.

The nine standing stones focused it. He had not known they could do this in reverse. He felt the moment the formation responded to the reversed direction — a specific shift in the vein concentration's organization, like a lens adjusting its focal length.

The outward projection extended into the valley.

He read forty-three coordination arrangements simultaneously.

Every gap. Every break. Every moment where forty-three people would need to adjust and the adjustment would cost them a half-second.

He spoke.

Not a command. Information. Specific, immediate, visual.

"Three splitting right. The lead agent is three paces ahead of the flanking position. He will step into the gap between the second and third stones in four seconds."

Shen Hua's people moved.

Not in response to his command. In response to the information he was providing that their own senses could then confirm. He was not directing them. He was giving them the reading the domain was producing.

The lead agent stepped into the gap.

He was not there.

He was somewhere else. Specifically he was in the position the reading had shown four seconds before he arrived there. Shen Hua's person was already in that position.

The lead agent stopped.

The split movement stalled.

Jian Yu read the next three seconds and spoke.
