Chapter 116 - Full Capacity

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN

### Full Capability

The cost cleared on the twenty-eighth day.

He was at the platform's edge when it happened. He held his hand toward the morning air.

The cold arrived.

Not gradually. Completely. The specific committed cold of Ice Sect's outer territory in deep winter. His hand registering it the way hands registered temperature — directly, immediately, without the domain's mediation.

He stood with it.

He counted his breaths.

One through twelve.

He stopped at twelve and then he kept going.

Thirteen.

Fourteen.

He stayed at fourteen.

New number.

He noted it.

Lin Mei was at the camp table. She felt him stop counting because she was always reading his cultivation condition.

She looked at him.

He held fourteen breaths toward her.

She understood without words.

She came to him.

"The cost cleared," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"And fourteen," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the platform.

"Two days," she said. "Before they arrive."

"Yes," he said.

He stepped onto the platform.

The formation received him.

He extended the domain.

Sharpening stage. Full capability. Not the developing range of the cost period. The full extension.

Twenty-three li.

He counted it automatically. The domain reaching outward through the valley and up the mountain approaches and into the dead zone's fringe territory and further south and further north and every seeded section within range was present in the peripheral awareness with Sharpening stage resolution — not eight to twelve li of Tempering stage range, not the twelve-breath deepening of the second reading phase.

Twenty-three li of full precision.

He could read the dead zone.

He could read the Shadow Sect guard formation already moving south two days ahead of the suppression specialists.

He could read the five generating sections' frequency signatures all simultaneously.

He looked at the platform.

At the focal point of the formation's three-century pathway structure.

He directed the between quality outward.

At Sharpening stage with formation amplification behind it.

The valley went quiet in a way that was not audible.

The nine standing stones' shadows were on the valley floor and the between quality moved through the geometric focusing structure they represented and the outward projection reached the dead zone's boundary in something that was not quite a breath and not quite a moment.

Li Shan said from the Sword Rain position: "The projection just read forty meters into the dead zone's suppression preparation staging."

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"The Void Anchor specialist is in that staging area," Li Shan said. "I can read him through the projection. He is calibrating the technique for the formation site's specific pathway structure."

"He has been studying us," Jian Yu said.

"Yes," Li Shan said. "Six weeks since the second deployment. He has been reading the formation's frequency signatures from the dead zone's coverage range." He paused. "He knows the pathway structure. He has calibrated the Void Anchor for the three-century depth."

"Show me the calibration pattern," Jian Yu said.

Li Shan extended the pattern-reading alongside the projection.

Elder Qin extended her depth reading.

The combined reading reached the staging area and returned with the Void Anchor's calibration.

Jian Yu read it.

The technique was precise. Calibrated to the formation's specific generative frequency. Designed to disrupt the pathway organization at the deepest level River-Stone's work had built.

He looked at the gaps.

Every structure had gaps.

The Void Anchor was the most precise technique he had ever read. The calibration was specific, deep, and refined over six weeks of study.

The gaps were small.

But they were there.

Three of them. Specific points in the Void Anchor's frequency structure where the calibration required a half-beat transition between layers. The between quality could find a half-beat transition.

"I can counter it," he said.

"You have read the calibration," Li Shan said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"All three gaps," Li Shan said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"Simultaneously," Li Shan said.

He looked at the outward projection reaching twenty-three li into the dead zone.

At Sharpening stage the absorbed principles were available simultaneously. Not the sequential application of Forging stage. All of them at once.

Full investment from the Vermilion Flame position absorption. Compressed power from the Dragon Roar Fang absorption. Geometric precision from the Frostbite absorption. Complete pattern-reading from the Sword Rain absorption.

All four simultaneously. Combined with the between quality. At fourteen breaths. At formation amplification.

"Yes," he said. "Simultaneously."

Li Shan was quiet for four seconds.

"The archive section on Sharpening stage active absorption," he said. "The theoretical documentation says simultaneous application is possible. It does not say whether simultaneous application at formation amplification is sustainable."

"No," Jian Yu said. "It does not."

"Because it has never been done," Li Shan said.

"No," Jian Yu said. "It has not."

He looked at the platform.

"Two days to practice it," he said.

He extended the projection.

He brought the simultaneous absorbed principles into the between quality.

The formation amplified.

He held fourteen breaths.

He practiced.
