Chapter 159 - Letters

CHAPTER 159

### Letters

Two messages arrived on the same morning.

He read them both at the hollow's edge with the morning sun on the ground.

The first was from Feng Luo.

*I stayed at Vermilion Sect for twelve days.*

*I showed my father the directed heat application on the first day. He watched for twenty minutes. He did not say anything. He went inside.*

*I thought it had not worked.*

*The next morning he came to the training ground before I was awake. He was watching from the wall when I arrived. He watched my morning practice for an hour.*

*Still did not say anything.*

*On the fourth day he asked me to show him again. I showed him. This time he watched for two hours.*

*He said: where does the precision come from.*

*I said: the cross-absorption from the combination. The Lost Blade's between quality and the Vermilion Flame's fire.*

*He said: explain what that means.*

*I explained it for two hours. He listened for two hours.*

*On the eighth day he asked me to show him the human record section. I showed him. He read for five hours.*

*He did not say anything when he finished.*

*On the twelfth day, when I was leaving, he stopped me at the gate.*

*He said: Feng Luo.*

*Just that.*

*My name.*

*I said: yes.*

*He said: come back.*

*I said: yes.*

*That was everything.*

*It was enough.*

*Tell Jian Yu: right decisions for wrong reasons still produce right outcomes. But sometimes the right reason follows the right decision. You just have to leave the door open long enough.*

He read the message.

He read the last paragraph twice.

He showed it to Lin Mei.

She read it.

"Xian Yue said the same thing," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"She said she was wrong to stop asking," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"And the door was still open," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the hollow.

"Feng Luo left the door open for twelve days," she said. "Not twelve years. Twelve days."

"Yes," he said.

"Because he showed his father what he actually was," she said. "Not what his father had decided he was. What he actually was."

"Yes," he said.

"The directed heat application," she said. "That was the key."

"Yes," he said.

She was writing before he finished the sentence.

The second message was from the third practitioner.

The one in the fringe section.

His name, he said in this message, was Pei Song.

He had not given his name in the previous messages.

*My name is Pei Song.*

*I have been in this section for five weeks. I have read the archive sections Mo Xuan sent. I have read Before The Words. I have read Mo Xuan's adaptation document.*

*I have been practicing every morning.*

*Yesterday I felt the section change.*

*Not much. A specific deepening in the frequency quality. Mo Xuan says it is the propagation effect from the hollow you are at. Fourteen percent increase in the between quality across the network. I felt it.*

*I have never felt a network change before. I have been a cultivator for twenty years and I have never felt the network change.*

*Mo Xuan says: that is because the network has never been this alive. He says the combination and the hollow are doing something that has not been done before.*

*I do not know if I am doing the right thing by staying here.*

*Mo Xuan says: yes you are.*

*I think he is right.*

*I am sending my name because the archive should have it. Mo Xuan showed me the Before The Words section. He showed me Shen Hua's entry. He showed me the eight children watching the dawn.*

*He showed me the blank entry.*

*He said: you are in the blank entry.*

*I asked what that meant.*

*He said: the oldest thing in the archive is the source of the between quality. You are practicing near a section that carries that source frequency at range. You are one of the first practitioners to sustain daily contact with the between quality as it deepens and propagates.*

*He said: your name belongs in the archive. Not as a significant practitioner. As the person who stayed.*

*Staying is what the archive is made of.*

*My name is Pei Song.*

*I am staying.*

He read the message.

He folded it.

He held it for a moment.

He sent it to Li Shan with a note: *Pei Song. Fringe section practitioner. Archive entry. Before The Words — new section: The First To Feel The Deepening. He felt the fourteen percent propagation increase. He named it. He stayed.*

Li Shan's response was immediate.

*Adding. Pei Song. The first to feel the deepening. His name is in the archive.*

*Also: the hollow's continuous frequency propagation is still increasing. Current rate — seventeen percent above pre-Wei Han application baseline. Climbing slowly. I do not know what ceiling it has or if it has one.*

He looked at the hollow.

At the between quality conducting outward through the connected network.

At seventeen percent and climbing.

At Pei Song in a fringe section feeling the change and sending his name.

At eight children watching a different dawn.

At Shen Bo's wife twice a year for thirty years.

At River-Stone three centuries ago choosing to stay.

He held the messages.

One from Feng Luo who had been given his name at the gate after twelve days.

One from Pei Song who had given his name after five weeks.

Both of them choosing.

Both of them staying long enough for something to change.

He looked at the unnamed color.

More complete than it had been a week ago.

More itself.

The between.

He committed.

"Don't waste it," he said quietly.

To both of them.

To all of them.
