CHAPTER 164

### Seventeen Breaths

He found seventeen on the morning they left Dusthaven.

He was not looking for it.

He was at the morning fire with the tea Han Ru had packed for the road and Lin Mei was writing and Bing Xi was at the camp's edge reading the nearby sections and the fire was the fire.

He counted his breaths.

One through sixteen.

He tried seventeen.

It arrived.

He stayed at seventeen.

He thought about three.

The night Master Feng died. The count that stopped at three and could not continue.

He thought about nine. The specific distance from three to nine and what had happened in between.

He thought about twelve. About fourteen. About sixteen.

About seventeen stalls in Linsha that he had counted without managing the counting.

He looked at the fire.

At seventeen breaths.

He did not know what seventeen meant yet.

He did not need to know yet.

He had learned from fourteen months of stages and costs and the hollow and the grandmother's frequency in the pathway structure and the continuous source of the between quality deeper than the archive's oldest entry —

He had learned that not knowing yet was not the same as not knowing.

It was just knowing at the correct distance.

He sent a message to Li Shan.

Not about the seventeen. That was his.

About the growing season sections in the territory west of Dusthaven that the domain was currently reading.

Eleven sections. Three at threshold proximity. The calibrated Sovereign stage application would address them more efficiently than the standard passive contribution.

He described the three sections' specific development characters.

Li Shan responded: *Cascade data confirms the three sections. I am updating the growing season schedule for the western territory. Also: the propagation rate from the hollow is now twenty-one percent above baseline and stable. It is not continuing to climb. It has found its level.*

*Twenty-one percent above baseline is the new normal.*

*The network is more alive than it has ever been in documented history.*

*I am stating this without comment except to note that I predicted this general outcome fourteen months ago based on incomplete data and the prediction was correct.*

*I am not being insufferable about this. I am simply noting it for the archive.*

He showed the message to Bing Xi.

She read it.

"He said he is not being insufferable," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"He is being insufferable," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"But he is also correct," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

She handed the message back.

"Seventeen," she said.

He looked at her.

"I was reading the domain while you were at the fire," she said. "The reading quality changed at the seventeenth breath. I read it in the network's frequency signature."

He looked at her.

"The network felt the seventeenth breath," he said.

"The Sovereign domain at the seventeenth breath," she said. "It produced a frequency propagation I have not read before. Brief. Clear. Then gone."

"What character," he said.

She thought about how to describe it.

"Like a door opening," she said. "And then closing. A space that was not there before and then was and then was not again. But the space existed."

He held seventeen breaths.

He looked at the domain.

He looked at the unnamed color.

He thought about the brief propagation.

"The next stage," he said.

"Yes," Bing Xi said. "That is what I think."

He held seventeen.

He looked at the road west.

"Not yet," he said.

"No," she said. "Not yet. But soon."

"How soon," he said.

"The calibrated application work," she said. "The Sovereign stage meeting each section where it is. You have been doing this for twenty days. Each day the frequency deepens slightly. Each day the seventeen-breath quality is slightly more present." She paused. "The work develops the worker."

He looked at the road.

"The next stage cost," he said.

"The historical record does not document a stage beyond Sovereign," she said.

"No," he said.

"Which means," she said.

"Which means the cost is undocumented," he said.

"And the capability," she said.

"And the capability," he said.

He picked up his pack.

He looked at Lin Mei.

She was looking at him with the expression he could not read in real time.

He looked at her face without reading the expression and without managing the not-reading.

Just looking.

"You heard," he said.

"Yes," she said.

"The next stage," he said.

"Yes," she said.

"Are you going to say it is undocumented and therefore concerning," he said.

"No," she said.

"Why not," he said.

She looked at the road west.

"Because everything we have done has been undocumented and the work keeps doing the right thing," she said. "The hollow. The calibrated application. The grandmother's frequency in the pathway structure." She paused. "The archive documents what already happened. What happens next is not documented because it has not happened yet."

He looked at her.

"And when it happens," she said, "I will document it."

He committed.

He walked west.

Seventeen breaths.

He stayed at seventeen.

The road was long.

The work was large.

And somewhere ahead, undocumented and approaching, the next thing was building toward the threshold the way sections built toward threshold — not visible until it was ready, not ready until it was time, not wasted because none of it had ever been wasted.

Don't waste it.

He walked.
