CHAPTER 225
### The Third Faction Leader
Li Shan's message arrived on the sixth morning west of Jing He.
*The third faction leader. The one moving north into the last inert territory.*
*He has stopped moving.*
*He is not adapting. He has not contacted Mo Xuan or the archive.*
*He is sitting in the inert territory.*
*Wang Fei is in the southeastern approach territory. She read his cultivation signature through a remote relay station sensor.*
*He is practicing.*
*Not the suppression technique. Something else.*
*Wang Fei says: it reads like a cultivation exercise she does not recognize. Not Shadow Sect standard technique. Something older.*
*She cannot identify the frequency source.*
*I am sending the frequency data to Rong Yan for identification.*
He read the message.
He thought about the third faction leader.
Alone in the last inert territory.
Stopped.
Practicing something unrecognizable.
He sent to Wang Fei: *Send the frequency data to Bing Xi also. She reads unknown cultivation frequencies at the best resolution available.*
Wang Fei: *Sending.*
Bing Xi received it.
She read the data for five minutes.
She looked at Jian Yu.
"The frequency," she said. "I have not read this directly. But I have read something adjacent to it."
"Where," he said.
"The hollow," she said. "The ancient layer. The thing that the between quality was pointing toward. What the beginning words were describing."
He looked at her.
"The third faction leader is not practicing the suppression technique," she said. "He is practicing something that carries the ancient layer's frequency character."
"How," he said.
"I do not know," she said. "But the character is consistent. The ancient layer is the condition that makes separate things separate. His practice is—" She stopped.
She read the data again.
"His practice is about the edges," she said. "Where separate things meet. Not the things themselves. The edges."
He held the grey blade.
The between.
The space between separate things.
"He found the between quality independently," he said.
"Not the between quality specifically," she said. "Something near it. Something that approaches the same source from a different direction."
He looked at the domain.
He thought about the ancient layer.
He thought about what approached the ancient layer from multiple directions.
The hollow approached it from below — the continuous frequency deepening until it reached the layer.
The between quality approached it from the sides — the crack and the sword and the domain reaching inward through twenty-three breaths.
What approached it from above?
He thought about the third faction leader in the last inert territory.
Alone.
Stopped.
Practicing something older than the suppression technique.
Something he had apparently known or discovered that carried the ancient layer's frequency.
He sent to Li Shan: *The third faction leader's practice. What do Shadow Sect's historical records show about pre-foundational technique? The technique before the suppression methodology was developed.*
Li Shan's response took two hours.
*Shadow Sect's historical records are not in the archive's primary collection. But Mo Xuan's research archive — the one he gave to Li Shan without conditions — includes a historical section.*
*In the historical section: Shadow Sect's foundational technique was developed approximately two hundred and fifty years ago. Before that, the practitioners who would form Shadow Sect used a different approach.*
*Not suppression. Delimitation.*
*Not removing frequency from territory. Marking the boundaries between territories.*
*The edges where separate territories met.*
*The technique fell out of use when the suppression approach was found to be more operationally effective.*
*It was not documented in the primary technique library after the transition.*
*But it was not destroyed.*
*It was filed in the historical archive.*
*The third faction leader is a historical technique researcher. Mo Xuan identified this in his network notes — he had flagged this practitioner as someone who spent unusual time in historical archives.*
*He found the delimitation technique.*
*He is practicing it.*
*He is not adapting to option three.*
*He is going further back than option three.*
He read the message.
He read it to Lin Mei and Bing Xi.
"He found something older than the suppression technique," Lin Mei said.
"Yes," he said.
"Something that approaches the ancient layer from above," Bing Xi said. "From the edges rather than below."
"Yes," he said.
"Delimitation," Lin Mei said. "The edges where separate territories meet."
"Yes," he said.
"The between," she said.
"Adjacent to the between," he said. "A different approach to the same source."
She was quiet.
"He needs to be in the archive," she said.
He looked at her.
"What he found," she said. "The delimitation technique. The pre-Shadow Sect practice. It is older than anything currently documented. It approaches the ancient layer from a direction the archive does not have."
"Yes," he said.
"He is not our enemy," she said. "He is a researcher who found something significant in the last place anyone was looking."
"Yes," he said.
He sent one message.
To the third faction leader's relay address — which Li Shan had found in Mo Xuan's network notes.
*I read your frequency signature through a relay sensor. The technique you are practicing. The delimitation methodology from Shadow Sect's pre-foundational period.*
*The archive does not have it.*
*The archive should.*
*My name is attached. Contact me when you are ready.*
He put the relay away.
He looked at the grey blade.
He looked at the road.
The door was open.
He waited.
