Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Shadows Over the North

The dawn broke with a reluctant light, filtering through the dome's perpetual haze to paint Thornewood in muted golds. Liam stood at the strategy board in the central pavilion, fingers tracing the etched lines of the captured maps. Jax's main camp nestled in a fortified hollow two days' march north, ringed by jagged outcrops and patrolled by his die-hard loyalists. Estimates put their numbers at eighty, bolstered by scavenged traps and a few low-tier mages. A direct assault risked heavy losses, but delay invited reinforcements from outer fringes.

Simone joined him, her bracers glinting as she adjusted a strap. 'We hit them at dusk,' she suggested, pointing to a ravine approach. 'Use the shadows for Void Step, then roots to choke their escapes.' Her voice carried that familiar edge, practical yet laced with the thrill of the hunt. Liam nodded, the plan solidifying. Elaine would handle rear support with her growing cadre of chanters, weaving barriers from faith-fueled vines.

By noon, the expedition force assembled—thirty strong now, swelled by the newly contracted from the ridge skirmish. Maria had outfitted them with fresh pauldrons, the leather etched with thorn sigils that caught the light menacingly. Lira's provisions included stamina-infused broths, sipped from communal bowls as the group set out. The path wound through thickening underbrush, the forest alive with distant howls that set nerves on edge.

The march tested endurance; PER picked up faint system pings from minor beasts skirting their flanks, but Swarm Call deterred close encounters, insects humming a warning perimeter. Liam felt the Claw Amulet's pull strengthen as terrain shifted to rockier soil, roots delving deeper for purchase. Conversation flowed in low tones—veterans swapping tales of past culls, newer binds sharing wary glances at the clan's unyielding rhythm.

Dusk fell as they neared the hollow, the air cooling to carry smoke from Jax's fires. Liam signaled a halt in a concealed thicket, activating Identify on the distant watchtowers: crude wooden spires manned by archers, their bows nocked. The camp sprawled below, tents clustered around a central bonfire where Jax's lieutenants barked orders. No sign of the man himself, but his banner—a jagged axe on black—fluttered defiantly.

The assault began with subtlety. Liam channeled Earth-Thorn Bind, the amulet syncing with his core to summon hybrid snares: roots laced with stone shards erupting from the ravine floor, impaling two patrols mid-stride. Their cries shattered the quiet, drawing chaos. Void Step blurred him into the fray, short sword slashing throats in the confusion. Radiant Cascade followed, beams arcing to sear a cluster of tents, igniting supplies and forcing survivors into the open.

Jax's forces rallied with ferocity. A burly enforcer hurled boulders enhanced by crude earth chants, but Liam's pull reversed them mid-air, crushing the caster instead. Arrows whistled from the towers; Simone countered with Whispering Wind volleys, her shots curving to splinter wood and fell the archers. Elaine's group advanced from the flanks, mace-wielders smashing through barricades while chants bolstered allies—wounds knitting as devotion surged.

Deeper in, resistance thickened. A mage circle attempted a ward bubble, but Swarm Call overwhelmed it, bugs seeping through cracks to sting and paralyze. Liam pressed on, thorns coiling to drag foes underfoot, their struggles feeding the soil's hunger. One lieutenant, a scarred veteran with a flail, broke through to challenge him—chain whipping toward his chest. Liam dodged with Sage Boots' agility, countering with a root spear that pierced the man's gut, lifting him thrashing before slamming down.

Jax emerged then, from a reinforced hut, his frame hulking under spiked armor, eyes burning with vendetta. 'Thorne's pup thinks he rules the wilds,' he snarled, charging with an axe that hummed with infused mana. The clash rang out—blade meeting sword in sparks, Jax's strength forcing Liam back a step. But affinity turned the tide; roots surged from below, binding Jax's legs, thorns drawing blood. He roared, shattering them with a pulse, but the delay cost him—Void Step repositioned Liam behind, sword biting into his shoulder.

The fight devolved into brutal exchanges. Jax's axe grazed Liam's arm, tearing leather, but Root Resilience absorbed the worst. Simone's arrow grazed Jax's thigh, slowing him, while Elaine's light-infused strike from the side cracked his guard. Enraged, Jax swung wide, but Liam ducked, activating Light Explosion in close quarters—a nova blasting the man back, armor smoking. Roots finished it, coiling tight to crush ribs and still his struggles.

The camp fell silent soon after, survivors yielding under contract oaths. Looting yielded substantial hauls: mana-infused ores, a cache of potions, and Jax's personal ledger detailing alliances with fringe warlords. Three potential assets emerged—a healer, a scout, and a forger—bound into the fold, their skills eyed for Thornewood's growth.

Return journey lightened by victory, the group camped under starless skies. Around the fire, Elaine led a brief rite, devotees murmuring praises that wove faint auras over the weary. Simone tended Liam's graze with a salve, her touch lingering, fingers brushing his collarbone in silent invitation. 'We press the advantage,' she murmured, lips close. Heat built, but the watch rotation pulled them apart—duty over desire, for now.

Back in Thornewood by midday next, integration began. The ores fueled the forge, potions stocked the infirmary. Liam reviewed the ledger alone, noting threats from a coalition brewing east. The dome's contraction hummed louder, urging expansion. Power consolidated, but shadows lengthened.
