Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Siege Shadows

The three days passed in a blur of feverish preparation, the air in Thornewood thick with the acrid tang of forge smoke and the metallic reek of sharpening blades. Liam's roots delved deeper into the earth, weaving a subterranean lattice that hummed with latent power, ready to erupt at his command. Overseers drove the slaves harder, their whips singing through the humid haze as bodies collapsed and were hauled away for the Corpse Trees to devour. No respite; the dome's contraction gnawed at the edges of their territory, forcing patrols to venture into fog-shrouded wilds where mutated beasts prowled, their howls a prelude to the human storm brewing.

In the inner sanctum, beneath the Mother Tree's colossal canopy, Liam gathered his inner circle. Elaine knelt at his feet, her lithe form draped in translucent silks that clung to her sweat-slicked skin, the Diadem of Eternal Grace perched on her brow, amplifying her healing auras. Her eyes, wide and adoring, traced the lines of his muscular frame as she massaged his calves with oiled hands, fingers digging into corded muscle. Simone lounged against a root throne nearby, her legs crossed, the Bracers of Whispering Wind glinting on her wrists as she toyed with a dagger, her sharp features set in calculating focus. Hannah paced, her powerful thighs flexing under leather breeches scarred from countless battles, auburn hair cropped short and practical.

"Jax's vanguard hit our outer pickets at dawn," Hannah reported, slamming a bloodied map onto the table. Her fist left a smear of crimson from a fresh kill—a scout she'd interrogated with her bare hands, twisting limbs until joints popped and confessions spilled. "Two hundred berserkers, foaming at the mouth from those elixirs. They're probing the eastern flank, testing for weak points. Sappers behind them, burrowing like maggots."

Liam absorbed the details, his mind syncing with the root network's whispers: vibrations of digging tools, the thud of armored feet, the guttural chants of Iron Fist's horde. He rose, shrugging off Elaine's touch with a casual shove that sent her sprawling, her breasts heaving as she gasped in mock protest, arousal flickering in her gaze. "Let them come. The bait's set—outer slaves on the ramparts, armed with scrap and false hope. When they charge, the venom pits activate."

Outside, the assault began with a roar that shook the walls. Horns blared from the fog, and the ground trembled as Jax's berserkers surged forward—hulking figures twisted by system mutations, their skin stretched taut over bulging veins, eyes wild with rage-induced frenzy. They crashed against the outer ring like a tidal wave of meat and fury, axes cleaving through the first line of slaves who screamed and fired erratic volleys from rusted bows. Limbs flew in sprays of gore; one slave's head burst open from a club strike, brains splattering the barricades as his body jerked in death throes.

Mira led the defense from the front, her scarred lip curling in a snarl as she drove her spear through a berserker's throat. The man gurgled, blood bubbling around the shaft, but his momentum carried him forward, slamming her against the wall. She twisted the weapon, shredding his windpipe, then kicked the corpse free, only for another to grab her arm. He wrenched it back, dislocating the shoulder with a wet pop, but she headbutted him, shattering his nose in a fountain of crimson. Enraged, she drew her dagger and jammed it into his eye socket, twisting until the hilt ground against bone, his body slumping as she shoved him into the crush.

Deeper in the fray, the sappers emerged from their tunnels, faces smeared with dirt and madness, swinging picks at the root-reinforced barriers. Liam felt their intrusion through his connection, a itch in his veins. He channeled the command, and the earth answered: roots burst from the soil like spears, impaling three sappers mid-swing. One man's chest exploded outward as a tendril punched through his ribs, coiling around his heart and yanking it free in a gush of blood that painted the tunnel walls. Another screamed as thorns wrapped his legs, sawing through flesh and bone, leaving him crawling in his own entrails, whimpering until a root crushed his skull like overripe fruit.

The horde pressed on, Jax himself visible now—a behemoth of a man, seven feet tall, his body a patchwork of grafted mutations: arms like tree trunks ending in claws, a jaw unhinged to reveal jagged teeth filed to points. He bellowed, cleaving a slave in half with a single sweep, the bisected torso flopping wetly to the ground, intestines uncoiling in the dust. "Thorne! Your roots end today!" His voice boomed, laced with some vocal affinity that rattled armor and bones alike.

Liam teleported to the breach via Void Step, materializing amid the chaos. A berserker lunged, axe raised, but Liam's Entangling Roots shot up, snaring the attacker's ankles and yanking him down. The man face-planted into the mud, teeth shattering on stone, and Liam stomped on his spine, vertebrae crunching under his boot. He followed with Light Explosion, the blast erupting in a dome of searing radiance that incinerated five foes, their skin blistering and peeling away in charred sheets, exposing sizzling muscle that twitched in the aftermath.

Simone flanked him, her arrows whistling through the air, each tipped with wind-infused barbs that pierced armor and exploded outward, shredding organs in bursts of red mist. One shot took a sapper in the gut, the arrow burrowing deep before detonating, his abdomen rupturing in a spray of bile and shredded intestines that splashed across his comrades. She grinned, feral and alive, as she nocked another, her body moving with lethal grace.

From the rear, Elaine's chants rose, her healing waves washing over the loyal fighters, mending gashes and fractured bones even as she directed a squad of devotees to drag wounded slaves into the fray as cannon fodder. One devotee, a young woman with ritual scars across her thighs, paused to press her lips to Elaine's hand in worship before charging forward, only to be gutted by a berserker's blade. Her entrails spilled hot and steaming, but she clawed at his legs, buying time for Hannah to close in.

Hannah barreled through like a storm, her massive hammer swinging in arcs that caved skulls and shattered collarbones. She caught a berserker by the throat, lifting him off the ground as his legs kicked futilely, then slammed him down onto a protruding root. The impact drove the spike through his back and out his mouth in a skewer of flesh and splintered teeth, blood drooling from the entry and exit wounds. "For the Divine One!" she roared, wrenching the body free and hurling it into the horde like a battering ram.

Jax locked eyes with Liam across the melee, his mutated form shrugging off a glancing root strike that gashed his arm, blood welling black and viscous. He charged, trampling slaves underfoot, their ribs cracking like eggshells, screams cut short by the crush of his boots. Liam met him head-on, Bramble Wall erupting to block the path, thorns lashing out to rake furrows across Jax's chest, peeling skin in ragged strips that hung like wet banners.

The warlord laughed, a guttural rumble, and smashed through the barrier, splinters embedding in his flesh as he swung a claw at Liam's head. Liam dodged with Blink, reappearing behind and driving his Rooted Staff into Jax's kidney. The gemstones flared, channeling Nature's fury—a surge of vines that burrowed into the wound, inflating inside his torso, stretching skin until it split along the seams, organs bulging against the pressure. Jax howled, swinging wildly, but Liam Void Stepped again, the space rippling as he unleashed Swarm: a cloud of razor-leaved insects that swarmed the giant, burrowing into eyes, ears, and mouth, chewing through soft tissues in a frenzy of chittering.

Jax clawed at his face, gouging out chunks of his own cheeks in bloody handfuls, but the insects feasted deeper, emerging from his nostrils in wriggling masses slick with gore. He staggered, dropping to one knee, and Liam finished it with a point-blank Light Bolt to the temple. The beam punched through skull and brain, exiting in a spray of gray matter and bone fragments that arced over the battlefield. Jax's body convulsed, piss and shit voiding in death, before toppling face-first into the mud, his horde faltering at the sight.

The system pinged: Victory: Iron Fist Vanguard Defeated. +1500 EXP. Territory Expansion Possible. Mana Absorbed: +10%. Cheers erupted from Thornewood's defenders, mingled with the moans of the dying. Slaves dragged Iron Fist survivors to the thorn pits, stripping them and forcing them face-down into the barbs. One man thrashed as thorns pierced his ass and thighs, tearing upward in jagged paths that flayed him from groin to shoulders, his screams a symphony of defeat. Women among the captives fared worse—pinned and used by victorious enforcers, cocks thrusting into unwilling mouths and cunts amid the blood, their cries drowned in the revelry.

Liam surveyed the field, roots retracting to haul corpses into the earth for absorption. The main force would come tomorrow, but this breach bought time. Simone sidled up, wiping arrow blood on her thigh, her hand brushing his arm suggestively. "They break easier than expected. Shall we celebrate? Elaine's been eager all day."

Elaine crawled forward on hands and knees, silks tearing to expose her curves, nipples hardening in the cooling air. "Bless us, Divine One," she murmured, nuzzling his boot. Liam considered, the adrenaline stirring heat in his veins, but waved them off. "Later. Fortify the lines. The real bloodbath awaits."

As night fell, fires dotted the walls, slaves tending wounds while enforcers patrolled, occasionally pulling one aside for a quick rut against the battlements—grunts and slaps echoing into the dark. Thornewood held, its roots drinking deep from the slain, growing stronger in the shadow of the siege.
