Chapter 27 - Calm Before the Coils

The Nile gifted the crew a fragile peace.

Three days from Memphis' rusting spires, they camped at Per-Wadjet oasis—emerald pools ringed by date palms, far from Pharaoh's chariots and Sokar's plague-wind. Wildborn clan (35 strong) lounged: ibex roasted low, linen dried on rocks, children splashing. Senen's fellowship sprawled fireside—brands dimmed, laughter free. Echo silent for first time; Maat's breath held.

Peace wove slow, heartfelt bonds.

Khesef arm-wrestled Tamit—Sandstride cheating wind-pushes, Tamit Stonewhisper anchoring table (rock-cheat). "Yield, boulder-brain!" Laughter boomed. Merit Dustveil'd dates mid-air—prank-flying into Neferu's lap. "Thief!" Neferu yelped, Lightweave retaliating with tickling sun-rays. Senen watched smiling, Echo replaying not fights, but this: crew's joy pure.

Quiet moments deepened roots. Merit braided Senen's hair ("Priest needs style!"), sharing Delta lullabies—voice soft, no veil. Tamit carved stone pendants (crew sigils: sand-wave, veil-swirl, light-ray, echo-eye, rock-fist)—gifted silent, grips firm. Neferu taught "bad songs" (intentionally off-key hymns); Khesef drummed Sandstride rhythms on skins. Senen opened: Echo'd Joren's Sereth victory—crew awed, then cheered: "To wild-cards!"

Clan kids crowned Senen "Echo Uncle"—chased Lightweave birds giggling. Elders shared Kush tales (Tamit's kin), Merit veiled games invisible. Night fell star-thick; group sprawled backs-up, tracing constellations. "That Ra's chariot?" Neferu pointed. "Nah—our path," Khesef grinned. Senen felt it: family, not fellowship. Fractures forgotten, if brief.

Games turned traditions. Tamit Stonewhisper'd story-tablets (crew etched backstories permanent). Merit "veiled secrets" game—whispered truths passed circle (Khesef's lost barge dreams; Neferu's priest-father regret). Senen shared Garden stone—passed hand-to-hand reverent. Laughter peaked: Neferu's "Sokar Dance" (rusty robot)—crew collapsed howling.

Peace peaked at dawn swim. Nile cooled sweat; kids splashed, adults floated. Khesef raced Senen (no brands—raw swim). Merit dunked Tamit ("Rock sinks!"). Neferu Lightweave'd rainbow fish. Senen floated center, Echo quiet bliss. "This... Maat."

Until desert horns wailed distant—evils stirred.

Thebes, Karnak Temple—Pharaoh's madness consumed.

Amenhotep III raged alone in Amun's sanctum, Solar Crown cracked from Memphis backlash—veins blackening serpent-Whisper. Abydos fractured, Heliopolis eclipsed, Memphis plagued. "Lies! Gods betray?" Priests fled his aura; viziers cowered. Echo priest's words gnawed: "Serpent spawn."

Whisper coiled dream-realm deeper: "Fractures from weakness. Sacrifice all*—your life, Nile Flux, Crown max. Release last two: Nehebkau rebellion-serpent, Taueret greed-swarm. Rule as death-god eternal."*

Madness snapped. Crown overdrive—sun-fire imploded inward, Flux hemorrhaging. Amenhotep seized twin Karnak slabs (Nehebkau/ Taueret seals), life-blood pouring amplifiers. "Maat ends! Chaos eternal!"

Dual seals shattered.

Nehebkau uncoiled first—priest-toppler serpent, scales rebellion-red. Brand: Mutiny Coil—turns loyalties (30m, allies betray 70%). "Pharaoh falls." Priests turned blades on guards (50 dead).

Taueret swarmed second—greed-locust plague, gold-veins pulsing. Brand: Hoard Swarm—corrupts riches to swarm (20m, tribute animates killer-insects). Temple gold animated—devoured 30 elites.

Pharaoh laughed final—Solar Crown nova consumed him, life sacrificed fueling duo. Corpse-king puppet, shambling: "Serve... chaos." Thebes plunged rebellion—priests vs. guards, gold-swarms feasting.

Egypt's heart fractured terminal.

Oasis peace shattered—Echo screamed visions.

Senen bolted from water: Pharaoh's suicide-rift, Nehebkau/ Taueret free, Thebes burning. Crew surfaced grim: "Last two?" Khesef gripped spear. Merit veiled fear. Tamit stones hardened. Neferu light dimmed resolute.

"Karnak. Now." Senen led—friendship's calm fueled war's end. "For Maat. For us."

Crew charged Thebes-ward—final seals called.
