Chapter 26 - Chapter XXV: Mirage Springs

The morning sun rose over Alindor, its golden light spilling across the marble streets as the group gathered their belongings. The air was already warm, the promise of the desert's heat looming beyond the city walls. One by one, they bid farewell to Priscila, Arcs, Chee, and Dave at The Twins tavern.

Priscila hugged Isolde tightly. "Take care of yourself, sweetheart. And don't forget—you've got a home here whenever you need one."

Isolde smiled faintly. "I'll hold you to that."

Arcs crossed his arms, smirking. "Try not to blow anything up this time, Han."

Han chuckled. "No promises."

With laughter and heartfelt goodbyes, the group stepped beyond the gates of Alindor, the city's white towers fading behind them as they faced the endless horizon of the Desert of Solara.

The moment they crossed into the sands, the heat hit them like a wall. The air shimmered, the dunes stretching endlessly beneath the blazing sun. Sweat beaded on their foreheads, and the wind carried the dry scent of dust and salt.

Shin exhaled sharply, shielding his eyes. "Alright, everyone! Next stop—Mirage Springs!"

Chrome grinned, his tattoos glowing faintly as he summoned one of his spirit beasts—a massive, spectral camel-like creature with translucent fur that shimmered like glass. "Hop on! This beauty can handle the heat better than any horse."

Sam raised her hands, a cool mist forming around the group. "I'll keep the air cold for as long as I can," she said, her voice strained but determined.

Shin nodded approvingly. "Good work, Sam. Let's move."

The journey across the desert was grueling. The sun blazed mercilessly overhead, and the sand burned beneath their boots. Isolde had long since given up trying to stay awake, dozing off under the shade of the spirit beast's back. Chrome hummed a desert tune, while Han adjusted his mechanical arm, the metal glinting under the sun.

By midday, the heat became unbearable. Shin called for a halt. "We rest during the day and travel at night," he ordered. "Set up the tents before the sun cooks us alive."

Everyone agreed without protest. They pitched their tents in the shadow of a dune, the fabric flapping softly in the hot wind. Sam reinforced the camp with frost wards, cooling the air just enough for them to breathe comfortably.

As the sun reached its peak, the desert fell silent—no birds, no wind, only the faint hum of heat rising from the sand. The group slept through the day, conserving their strength for the night ahead.

When dusk arrived, the desert transformed. The heat faded, replaced by a cool breeze that whispered across the dunes. The stars emerged, countless and bright, painting the sky in silver light. The group packed up and continued their journey, their path illuminated by the moon.

By the third night, the faint glow of lanterns appeared on the horizon. The sound of rushing water reached their ears—a rare melody in the desert.

"Mirage Springs," Shin said softly, relief in his voice.

They entered the town just as dawn broke. Despite the heat, the streets were alive with activity. Merchants shouted from their stalls, waving colorful fabrics and exotic spices. The scent of roasted meat and sweet syrup filled the air. Children ran barefoot through the streets, laughing as they splashed in the shallow pools that gave the town its name.

Sam looked around in awe. "It's so lively... even in this heat."

Chrome stretched his arms. "That's Mirage Springs for you. The oasis that never sleeps."

Isolde yawned, rubbing her eyes. "As long as they've got cold drinks, I'm happy."

Shin smiled faintly, his gaze sweeping over the bustling town. "Let's restock our supplies and gather information. The desert's only going to get harsher from here."

Han nodded. "I'll check the blacksmiths for spare parts. My arm's been acting up."

Eva adjusted her cloak, her eyes scanning the crowd. "I'll visit the local chapel. Maybe they've heard news from the east."

Pixie and Ciara exchanged glances. "We'll handle the market," Pixie said. "Ciara's good at bargaining."

Ciara blushed. "I-I just don't like being overcharged..."

Shin chuckled. "Alright, everyone. Let's meet back here by sundown."

Later that day, Sam and Isolde went together with Shin, browsing through the bulletin board near the town square. The board was covered with parchment notices—bounties, missing persons, and merchant requests. One particular notice caught Shin's eye:

A large scorpion has been terrorizing the outskirts of Mirage Springs. Reward: 500 gold pieces.

Shin tore the note from the board. "A desert scorpion, huh? That's close by. We'll take it."

Isolde raised an eyebrow. "Just the three of us? You sure that's wise?"

Shin smirked. "If we can't handle it, we'll regroup. But I'd rather not drag everyone into this unless we have to."

Sam nodded. "Then let's do it. The sooner we deal with it, the safer the town will be."

They left the marketplace and headed toward the desert's edge. Shin turned to Isolde. "Can you track it?"

Isolde knelt, pressing her palm against the sand. Her eyes glowed faintly as she whispered, "Eagle Eye."

A faint shimmer spread across the ground, revealing traces of movement invisible to the naked eye. She pointed toward a cluster of dunes in the distance. "That way. The lair's not far."

Shin nodded. "Good. Let's move."

Meanwhile, Eva arrived at the dusty temple on the far side of town. The building was small and worn, its stone walls cracked from years of heat and sandstorms. Inside, a lone priest tended to the altar, his robes faded but his eyes kind.

"Welcome, traveler," he greeted softly. "What brings you to this humble temple?"

Eva bowed respectfully. "I'm Eva of the Order of Light. I bring news from the temple of Alindor."

The priest's expression darkened. "Then you've seen it too."

Eva nodded gravely. "Everyone there was dead. No signs of struggle. It's the same as what happened in Shangri-La."

The priest sighed heavily. "Yes... the same fate befell the temple there months ago. No word has come since. The corruption spreads faster than we can contain it."

He reached beneath the altar and retrieved a sealed letter, marked with the royal insignia of the Church. "You must go to the Cathedral in the main city of Solara. Deliver this to the Grand Meister. He must be informed before it's too late."

Eva accepted the letter, her hands trembling slightly. "I'll deliver it, I promise."

The priest placed a hand on her shoulder. "Dark tidings are coming, child. I can feel it in the air. If what I fear is true, then the light of the gods may soon fade. Make haste—there's no time to waste."

Eva bowed deeply. "May the Goddess guide us all."

As she turned to leave, a soft glow caught her attention. Near the altar, Ciara knelt in prayer, her eyes closed and her hands clasped tightly. A faint golden light surrounded her, and her eyes began to glow softly as divine energy flowed through her body. The air shimmered with warmth and serenity.

Eva paused, watching in awe as Ciara received the Blessing of Mei's Grace. When the light faded, Ciara opened her eyes and stood, her expression calm and radiant. Pixie stood nearby, smiling proudly.

Eva approached them, still amazed. "That was incredible. How's the pilgrimage going?"

Ciara smiled shyly. "It's going great. So far, I've managed to receive two blessings—thanks to all of you."

Eva's smile softened, but then she noticed a thin trail of blood running from Ciara's nose. "Ciara, you're bleeding!"

Ciara blinked in surprise, touching her nose. "Oh—! It's nothing, really. Just a little side effect. I'm fine."

Pixie frowned and handed her a small cloth. "You should still wipe it. Don't push yourself too hard."

Ciara nodded, dabbing the blood away with a faint smile. "I'll be fine. Mei's watching over me."

Eva looked at her with concern but said nothing more. She could feel something strange in the air—something divine, yet unsettling.

As she stepped out into the blinding sunlight, she looked down at the sealed letter in her hand. The wax shimmered faintly with divine energy. Whatever message it carried, it was urgent—and dangerous.

She whispered to herself, "I'll deliver it... no matter what."

At the same time, Shin and the others reached the cave of the great scorpion. The entrance loomed before them, half-buried in sand and shadow.

Isolde crouched low, scanning the ground. "That's where I last sensed it. Maybe it's inside."

Shin nodded. "Let's see how big this thing really is."

They moved quietly toward the entrance, the air thick with tension. Just as Shin stepped forward, something struck him hard across the cheek, sending him sprawling backward.

"Shin!" Sam cried out.

The sand behind them erupted as a massive tail burst from the ground, glistening with venom. The creature emerged—its body armored in thick, black carapace, its claws snapping with terrifying force. It was larger than anything they had ever seen, its tail alone the size of Chrome.

Shin wiped the blood from his lip and smirked. "So that's how it is, huh?"

He dashed forward, shadows swirling around his hands. "Shadow Binding!" Dark tendrils shot from the ground, wrapping around the scorpion's legs and tail, holding it in place.

Isolde raised her revolvers and fired, but the bullets ricocheted harmlessly off its armor. "Damn it! Too thick!"

"Sam!" Shin shouted. "Hit it with everything you've got!"

Sam nodded, her eyes glowing blue as she raised her hands. "Frost Convergence!"

Five shards of ice formed in the air, spinning rapidly before launching forward. They struck the scorpion's underbelly, piercing through the gaps in its armor. The creature screeched, thrashing violently before collapsing into the sand, lifeless.

The three of them stood still for a moment, breathing heavily. Then Isolde grinned. "Well, that was easier than I thought."

Shin chuckled. "Good teamwork. Let's head back and—"

He stopped mid-sentence as the ground began to tremble.

From the surrounding dunes, ten more scorpions erupted from the sand, their claws snapping, their eyes glowing faintly red. The noise of the battle had awakened the nest.

Sam's face paled. "Oh no..."

Shin drew his blade, his expression hardening. "Looks like round two just started."

Sam was crying, shouting, "It hurts!" as one of the scorpions' stingers grazed her arm, the venom burning through her skin. Shin quickly moved to shield her, his shadows flaring outward as the swarm closed in.

Back at camp, night had already fallen. The stars shimmered faintly above the dunes, and the cool desert wind carried the scent of stew simmering over the fire. Eva and the others were gathered around the campfire—Chrome was stirring a pot of thick stew, humming softly, while Pixie and Ciara chatted with Han about their travels.

The peaceful atmosphere was broken when footsteps approached from the darkness. Shin, Sam, and Isolde finally returned from their hunt. Isolde tossed a heavy bag of coins onto the table with a dull thud.

"Mission accomplished," she muttered.

Eva, eyes closed as she stirred her tea, smiled. "Welcome back. I trust everything went—" She opened her eyes mid-sentence and froze. Her expression twisted as she tried desperately to keep her composure. Her lips trembled, and she quickly turned away, covering her mouth to stop herself from laughing.

Han looked up next and nearly dropped his bowl. "What in the world happened to you three?!"

Pixie and Ciara turned to look—and immediately went silent, their eyes wide. Both of them pressed their hands over their mouths, their shoulders shaking as they tried to suppress their laughter.

Chrome blinked, confused by everyone's reaction. "What's going on? Why's everyone acting weird?"

Then he turned—and saw them.

Shin's face was swollen like a balloon, his lips puffed up and uneven. Sam's cheeks were red and bloated, her hair sticking out in every direction. Isolde's entire face was swollen, her eyes barely visible through the puffiness.

Chrome stared for a moment, then burst out laughing so hard he nearly fell over. "HAHAHAHAHA! What happened to you guys?! Oh gods—Isolde, I have to be honest, that's an improvement!"

Isolde glared—or tried to—but her swollen face made the expression look more like a pout. "Shut up, Chrome!" she mumbled through puffed lips.

Shin sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Apparently, those scorpions weren't poisonous... but their stings cause swelling. And since there were ten of them..."

Sam groaned, her voice muffled. "We got stung. A lot."

Chrome was still laughing uncontrollably, clutching his stomach. "You three look like overripe melons!"

Pixie finally lost control and started laughing too, while Ciara hid behind her hands, giggling softly. Even Han couldn't help but chuckle.

Eva tried to regain her composure, wiping a tear from her eye. "Alright, alright, that's enough. Let's get some ice on those stings before they swell any worse."

Shin sat down beside the fire, defeated. "Next time, remind me to bring anti-venom... or a flamethrower."

Isolde crossed her arms, puffing her cheeks even more. "Next time, you're fighting them alone."

The camp erupted in laughter again, the sound echoing across the quiet desert night. Despite their swollen faces and aching bodies, the warmth of companionship filled the air—proof that even in the harshest places, laughter could still find its way through.
