Chapter 9 - The Runt's Pact

The morning air in the Neutral Zone ruins tasted of ancient stone and the lingering, metallic tang of the previous night's storm. Nikolas moved through the tall, golden grass, his footsteps light and rhythmic, a stark contrast to the heavy, dragging gait he had displayed only an hour ago in the Salvatore courtyard.

[REMARK]: The High-Class eyes are off you. For now.

He reached the center of the ruins—a collapsed amphitheater where the "Runt Squad" had spent their childhood playing at being heroes. Today, there was no play.

Jax was already there, hunched over a stone slab. He was surrounded by a chaotic mess of copper wires, rusted gears, and a glowing blue crystal he had likely "liberated" from the Mage Manor's disposal bins. His fingers moved with a blurring, frantic speed, clicking pieces of scrap metal together into something that looked like a mechanical gauntlet.

Mina stood in the far corner, her back to the group. She was dressed in heavy, reinforced leather, her thick dragon-kin tail twitching with rhythmic tension. She was standing beneath a crumbling stone archway, repeatedly slamming her shoulder into the granite. Thud. Thud. Thud. Each impact sounded like a hammer hitting an anvil.

"You're late," Kael whispered, appearing from the shadow of a pillar. The vampire youth looked paler than usual, his eyes dark with the hunger he refused to sate. He wasn't drinking blood, and the effort to maintain his strength through sheer willpower was etched into the tight line of his jaw.

"Marcus stopped me," Nikolas said, leaning against a moss-covered wall. He checked his internal clock.

"Did he hit you again?" Sora asked, looking up from a thick, leather-bound book that looked older than the ruins themselves. Her "glitchy" magic was manifest today—tiny sparks of purple light occasionally leaped from her fingertips, scorching the edges of the parchment.

"He tried," Nikolas said, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. "He missed."

The group fell silent. They all knew what "missing" meant in the Salvatore family. It meant Nikolas had done the impossible.

"We saw what happened at the well," Toby said, stepping out from behind a pile of rubble. The beast-kin was carrying a heavy iron hammer, his arms corded with the muscles of a boy who spent eighteen hours a day at the forge. "We saw what that... thing... did to Leo. And we saw the guards lie about it."

Nikolas looked at his five friends. They were all outcasts. They were the "Low-Class" baggage of the great families, the ones meant to be servants or foot soldiers.

"They're going to recruit us," Nikolas said, his voice hard. "In a few weeks, the Knights will be here. They think they're going to take us to the Academy to turn us into weapons for their war. They think we're lucky to be chosen."

"I'm not going as a servant," Jax muttered, his mechanical gauntlet hissing as he tightened a screw. "I'm going as an Engineer. I'll build things that make their 'Noble Flow' look like a candle in a hurricane."

"I'm going to be the wall," Mina said, turning around. Her shoulder was bruised, the scales there dull and cracked, but her eyes were burning with a fierce, Draconic pride. "I don't need wings to drop a Shadow Demon."

Nikolas felt the [Alpha Buff] pulse in his chest—a warm, golden light that only he could see. It wasn't a command; it was a connection. He saw five flickering icons in the corner of his vision, representing his pack.

[PARTY STATUS: THE RUNT SQUAD]

• Jax: Level 3 (Human Engineer) - [CURRENT TASK: GEAR REFINEMENT]

• Mina: Level 4 (Dragon-Kin Monk) - [CURRENT TASK: IRON SKIN TRIAL]

• Kael: Level 3 (Vampire Stalker) - [CURRENT TASK: BLOODLESS FASTING]

• Sora: Level 2 (Chaos Witch) - [CURRENT TASK: ANCIENT SCRIPTURE]

• Toby: Level 3 (Beast-Kin Smith) - [CURRENT TASK: FORGE ENDURACE]

"We train here," Nikolas said, stepping into the center of the circle. "Every day. We don't share our methods with the families. We don't tell the teachers. We show up at that Recruitment as a pack, or we don't go at all."

"And what about you, Niko?" Kael asked, his eyes narrowing. "You're the only one left with the Salvatore blood. Are you going to be their 'perfect soldier'?"

Nikolas reached into his pocket and pulled out the small wooden wolf Leo had carved. He held it up for them all to see.

"I'm going to be the one who kills the things that took him," Nikolas said. "And I'm going to be the one who makes sure no one else has to lie about their friends' deaths."

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]:

[QUEST INITIALIZED: THE INDEPENDENT GRIND]

[OBJECTIVE]: Oversee the squad's training without revealing the System.

[REWARD]: Shared Experience Link (Rank 1).

For the next several hours, the ruins transformed into a secret war-room.

Nikolas watched them, his [Combat HUD] analyzing their movements. He saw the flaws in Jax's grip, the slight tremor in Kael's legs from the lack of blood, and the way Sora's magic was leaking from her core. He didn't have "system data" for their species, but his [Vanguard's Reflex] allowed him to see the rhythm of their struggle.

"Jax, the gear on the left—it's lagging," Nikolas said, pointing to the gauntlet. "If you adjust the tension by two millimeters, the mana-flow won't bottleneck."

Jax blinked, looking at the device. He took a measurement. "How did you... you're right. If I hadn't changed that, the whole thing would have exploded in three minutes."

Nikolas moved to Mina. "Don't just hit the stone, Mina. Let the impact travel through your heels. If you lock your knees, you're just breaking your own bones. You want the stone to break, not you."

Mina adjusted her stance, her tail lashing the ground. She struck the archway again. This time, the granite cracked. A look of pure, primal joy flashed across her face.

As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, Nikolas felt a strange sensation—a pull in his chest, as if a thread were being drawn from his heart and tied to each of them.

They didn't see the red boxes. They didn't hear the chimes. They just felt the presence of a boy who refused to stay down—a leader who saw them not as "runts," but as specialists.

"Same time tomorrow?" Toby asked, wiping sweat and soot from his brow as he packed his hammer into a leather wrap.

"Same time," Nikolas said.

As they dispersed, slipping back toward their respective estates and servant quarters, Nikolas stayed behind for a moment. He looked at the old well, now sealed with a heavy iron grate and stone slabs by the Salvatore guards.

He felt the [Lunar Cache] in his mind—an infinite, dark space waiting to be filled. He reached out and touched the iron grate.

[ITEM DETECTED: REINFORCED IRON GRATE]

[ACTION]: Store?

"No," Nikolas whispered. "Not yet."

He turned back toward the manor, his body tired but his mind a sharp, crystalline
