Chapter Title: 029

"No helping it. I just have to shoot 'em with a fucking silenced gun and take them out one by one..."

I also thought about a plan to use unlimited grenades. The idea was to pull aggro from afar using a decoy or a flashbang, and then toss grenades over there. I could probably wipe out a huge number of zombies that way.

The problem is that grenades are so fucking loud that all the zombies in the vicinity would swarm over here. I was in a position where I had to go outside. If I was just doing an infinite siege defense, I would've thrown them...

'That's just robbing Peter to pay Paul. Even if I kill them all here... zombies from the next street over will come rushing in after hearing the grenade.'

I pulled a crossbow out of my Subspace Storage. It's the quietest ranged weapon in Battlegrounds 2.

When I looted this, I thought, 'Should I even bother picking this up...?' But now that I have it, it's actually useful. I plan to use my quietest weapons first, starting on the zombies closest to me. That minimizes the chance of pulling aggro.

I detached a 4x scope from another gun and mounted it on the crossbow. It would've been nice to have a 6x or 8x scope, but unfortunately, I didn't have the luck to find any. I looted nine 4x scopes, so I guess I was just unlucky with the higher magnifications.

"After this, I'll use the VSS."

I moved quietly and positioned the crossbow on the window between the apartment stairs, like I was mounting it. Right now, I'm at the window between the 10th and 9th floors.

Looking through the 4x scope, I aimed at the zombies swarming around the flowerbeds and parking lot on the ground level. I took a deep breath, and when I was perfectly steady, I fired a crossbow bolt at a zombie target.

— Thwip! —

With a slightly dull sound, the crossbow bolt flew through the air. Unfortunately, the bolt drop was too steep, so the first shot missed the zombie.

— Thwip! —

Second attempt. This time, it barely missed. I just need to pay a bit more attention to the drop.

— Thwip! —

A zombie dropped.

"Good."

It went down with a direct hit to the head. Looking closely through the 4x scope, it seemed to have dug right into its right eyeball. I reloaded the crossbow, found my next target, and aimed.

— Thwip! — — Thwip! — — Thwip! — — Thwip! —

"Fuck."

Missed four times in a row. Hitting them isn't easy.

It was especially hard to hit the ones that were shambling around, groaning "Guuuhhh...". The steep bolt drop was one problem, but the slow travel speed meant I had to lead my shots if the target was moving. The zombies would walk, stop, then suddenly change direction—pulling moves that were hard for a human to predict. It was complete garbage.

On top of that, the wind, which hadn't been blowing earlier, started picking up. Because of all this, I was only landing about 1 in every 3 or 4 bolts.

'...It's better to just aim for the ones standing still, even if they're a bit further away.'

I changed my target selection. Originally, I aimed for the zombies closest to the entrance of my apartment building, but now I decided to kill the fuckers who were just standing around blankly. Of course, among the ones spacing out, the closest ones still took priority.

— Thwip! —

'Headshot.'

As expected, it's way easier to hit the bastards when they're standing still.

— Thwip! —

"Nice."

Once I started aiming for the stationary zombie fucks, I began hitting them with near-perfect accuracy. The only times I missed were when the wind suddenly gusted or changed direction.

When I looted the 5 crossbows, I also picked up 75 crossbow bolts. That's because in Battlegrounds 2, each crossbow usually comes with 15 bolts.

I used all 75 bolts. The number of zombies I killed with the crossbow was 25. Exactly one kill for every three bolts. I missed a lot early on because I hadn't gotten a feel for it or chose bad targets.

"Phew... now I'll put the crossbow away... and try shooting a gun... Heave-ho. Let's detach the 4x scope..."

I pulled out the subsonic sniper rifle called the VSS. The quietest gun in Battlegrounds 2. The game devs described it with the nickname 'Silent Assassin'. However, its damage was so weak that players nicknamed it the 'Binoculars that shoot bullets'. Other nicknames included 'BB gun' and 'Curveball shooter'.

The VSS comes with a built-in 4x scope, so I didn't need to attach the 4x scope I had looted. It also features a large, integrated suppressor.

I swapped out the magazine for an extended mag. The ammo capacity went from 10 rounds to 22. This gun doesn't originally use 9mm ammo... but it was one of those guns where the caliber was weirdly changed to fit the game.

"Huu... Huu..."

I rested the VSS against the lower window sill like I did with the crossbow, took a deep breath, and fired at my target. Once again, my targets were the stationary or slow-moving zombies.

— Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! —

All the zombies were headshot, collapsing with holes punched through their skulls.

"Wow... Fuck... Shooting a gun after using that crossbow feels like I can finally breathe... Ffuuuck..."

After struggling with that dog-shit crossbow, welcoming the advanced result of human scientific civilization known as a firearm made me feel incredibly refreshed. Fuck, if even a piece-of-shit VSS feels this good... shooting a better gun would've made me piss myself from the sheer difference in the experience threshold.

I focused back on the scope, took a deep breath, and pulled the trigger.

— Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! — — Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! — — Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! — — Thwip! Thwip! Click. —

I went through all 22 rounds and reloaded. I swapped in a pre-loaded magazine, firmly planted the stock against my shoulder for the next volley, pressed my eye against the scope, and took up my shooting stance again.

I had plenty of 9mm ammo. Because I had an overflowing amount, at some point I started prioritizing speed over accuracy. Rather than focusing and taking single shots, it seemed more efficient to just fire quickly, even if my accuracy dropped a bit.

— Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! — — Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! Thwip! — — Thwip! Thwip! Click. —

I was reloading again, fully intending to pop all the zombie bastards' heads, when...

— Flash. Flash. —

"...Hm? ...What's that?"

Suddenly, sunlight reflected toward me, slightly blinding me. Looking at the direction, I saw a light flashing from the apartment building opposite mine.

"Is that Building 207? ...It's the top floor, the 20th, and... the unit must be either 2006 or 2005."

Judging by the direction of the light, it looked like someone was using a mirror to reflect sunlight and signal me.

'...Is it some kind of distress signal?'

— Flash. Flash. Flash. Flaaash. Flaaash. Flaaash. Flash. Flash. Flash. —

"...Feels like Morse code. But I don't know shit about that...?"

The same light reflection signal repeated.

— Flash. Flash. Flash. Flaaash. Flaaash. Flaaash. Flash. Flash. Flash. —

I didn't know the first thing about Morse code... but I roughly got the gist. It was probably an SOS signal or something. Anyway, I looked closely at the source of the light through the 4x scope attached to my gun. Some woman was sending the distress signal.

"Ooh...!"

But more importantly, the woman had her top off. Her tits were in full view.

"...She clearly knows how to send a proper distress signal. She's worth considering saving...!"

I observed the woman closely through the scope. First off, her breasts were almost as big as Hye-jeong's. Maybe just slightly smaller... That size is either an F-cup or an E-cup.

'Boobs, pass.'

I looked at her nipples. They were pink.

"Pink nips! Total pass! Bonus points!"

Next, I looked at her face... Hmm... Her face was kinda average. Maybe because she's suffered a lot in the apocalypse...? She looked a bit rough... Maybe it's just because she's grimy, and she'd look different if I washed her up and put makeup on her...

"Her face is average. Then the total score is... Hmm..."

The total score is important. Because if the total score is low, I won't bother going to save her. I began calculating her total score out of a maximum 100 points.

'First, plus 100 points for being a woman. Since she'll have a pussy. If it was a guy, I would've started at minus 10,000 points... Plus 500 points for big boobs. Another 500 points for pink nips. Her face is average, so 0 points. All together... 1100 points out of 100.'

The total score came out to 1100 out of 100. That makes her worth saving.

I was going to go inside my house, grab a mirror, and reflect some sunlight back to signal that I noticed her... but then I realized I had a laser sight attachment I looted from Battlegrounds 2.

While watching the woman through the 4x scope, I clicked the laser sight on and off to send a signal. Then I moved the laser sight very slightly in an 'OK' motion so the woman would understand.

Seeing my signal, the woman nodded vigorously and started frantically sending me more light signals...

"Ah... stop sending signals... I don't know Morse code... By the way, why does that bitch know Morse code when I don't?"

I ignored the light signals and went back to shooting. Maybe the woman had binoculars too, because once I started shooting, she stopped the signals and just quietly watched me.

I turned my scope to look at her for a moment, and saw her with her hands clasped tightly together, looking up at the sky, sobbing and praying.

'Is she praying to God, thanking Him for saving her...? Looking at her lips, it seems like she's saying she'll do anything if I just save her... Anyway... slurp... Hehe... She looks delicious... I'll have to wash her clean and fuck her...'
