Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 Fleeting Glimpses

Shenzhen – Five Years Later

The boardroom had fallen into an unusual quiet. The Philippine executives had stepped away briefly to discuss internal matters, leaving Ben Wang, who is about to exit.

His eyes flicked to the side of the room—and for a heartbeat, he thought he saw her.

Alessandra.

She had been there. He was certain of it—the tilt of her head, the way she observed silently, the aura of someone invisible yet entirely present. But before he could move, two executives returned, documents in hand.

"CEO Wang," one said briskly, "we need to review the latest amendments before the final signatures."

Ben blinked. When he looked again, she was gone.

Gone as suddenly and quietly as she had appeared five years ago.

Had he imagined it? His pulse quickened. Every instinct screamed she had been there, but the space was now empty, silent.

He shook his head subtly, forcing his focus back to the executives, but his mind was elsewhere.

The negotiation concluded flawlessly. The Philippine delegation had executed every detail with precision, unaware of the invisible hand that guided them. Yet Ben's thoughts remained stubbornly occupied.

Later, he suggested something unusual.

"Gentlemen," he said, voice low and smooth, "you've done exceptional work today. Let's celebrate."

After a brief hesitation, the executives agreed. Ben invited them to a nearby lounge.

Alessandra, however, remained absent. Another client, another trial looming—she could not attend. Her presence would have been impossible. She stayed in her hotel, reviewing documents, her mind only half on her work, the other half lingering on the fleeting memory of the boardroom.

At the lounge, Ben poured amber liquid into a glass, lifting it slightly.

"To your negotiation skills," he said. "I must admit, I am impressed."

The executives chuckled, returning the compliment. Then one added casually:

"You know, the real ace behind today's smooth negotiation? Our adviser—Alessandra Hernandez."

Ben froze. Glass halfway to his lips.

"Alessandra?" he repeated, voice low, as if speaking it aloud might conjure her.

"Yes," another executive said. "She's brilliant. Always precise, never misses a technical detail. Honestly, if she weren't monitoring us through the earpiece, we would have missed several key points. She's… remarkable."

Ben set his glass down slowly, heart racing, mind spinning.

He remembered the quick glimpse in the boardroom—the woman who had once called herself Ale. Could it have been her? Could it actually be her?

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips. "Remarkable," he murmured.

The executives relaxed, sipping their drinks, unaware of the storm swirling through Ben Wang's mind.

Alessandra… Ale…

The recognition, the admiration, the brilliance—the woman before him, invisible and untouchable, was the same who had called him Ben. Yet she had transformed. Independent, commanding, unstoppable. And still, somehow, entirely familiar.

Back at her hotel, Alessandra closed her files and leaned back, exhausted but exhilarated. The Shenzhen skyline glimmered in her thoughts—the negotiation, the city lights, that fleeting glimpse.

She did not know that Ben Wang had spoken her name aloud for the first time in years.

She did not know that somewhere across the city, he raised his glass silently in her honor, the unspoken connection stretching between Shenzhen and Manila.

A soft chime broke her reverie. A message. Unknown sender.

"Meet me at the Ritz lobby. 9 PM. –B"

Her breath caught.

The game was no longer invisible.

The board had been set. And now… the pieces were moving.
