Chapter 12 - The Story That Shouldn't Exist

Silence. Real silence. Not the awkward kind that followed one of Rin's terrible jokes.

Not the tense silence before two armies clashed. This silence... Felt wrong.

Like the world itself had stopped breathing. Rin stared at the empty space where the System window had disappeared.

"...System?"

Nothing.

"No sarcastic response?"

Silence.

"...No passive-aggressive achievement?"

Nothing.

"...No emotionally damaging notification?"

Still nothing. A chill crawled down his spine.

"...Okay."

He swallowed.

"That's actually worse."

Around the table, everyone noticed the sudden change in Rin's expression. Kaelith was the first to speak.

"What happened?"

Rin didn't answer immediately. He kept staring at the empty air.

"...It's gone."

Lucien frowned.

"What is?"

"The System."

"..."

"The annoying magical thing."

"It's..."

He hesitated.

"...Silent."

The room grew tense. Vorak slowly crossed his arms.

"You said it never stopped talking."

"It doesn't...normally."

Kaelith narrowed his eyes.

"What was the last thing it said?"

Rin looked at everyone gathered around the table. Then repeated every word exactly.

"Emergency Story Update."

"Hidden Main Villain has begun moving."

"The original story..."

"Has started to change."

When he finished... Nobody spoke.

Not because they didn't understand. Because they understood too well. Elder Veyron slowly stood from his chair.

His expression had completely lost its earlier amusement.

"...Tell me something."

Rin nodded.

"Okay."

"What is the original story?"

"..."

"..."

"...Uh..."

Rin blinked.

Then blinked again.

"Oh."

Everyone waited.

"Oh no."

Kaelith stood.

"...Rin."

"I..."

His face slowly turned pale.

"I completely forgot."

Lucien looked confused.

"Forgot what?"

"...I know this world."

Silence.

"I've... been here before."

Kaelith frowned.

"...Impossible."

"Not physically."

Rin quickly shook his head.

"I mean..."

His hands began moving wildly as he tried to explain.

"This world was a web novel."

Blank stares.

"...A..."

Lucien tilted his head.

"...What is a web?"

"...That's not important."

"And a novel?"

"A story."

Realization spread across the room.

"You are saying..."

Elder Veyron spoke slowly.

"...our world...is a story?"

Rin looked absolutely miserable.

"...I wasn't going to tell you."

Nobody laughed. Nobody called him insane.

Instead...Kaelith quietly asked,

"What kind of story?"

Rin wished he hadn't.

"...A tragedy."

The word hit the room like an explosion. Vorak's smile disappeared. Lucien slowly sat back down. Elder Veyron closed his eyes.

"...Continue."

Rin nodded weakly.

"I never finished it."

"You did not?"

"I..."

He looked guilty.

"I died."

"..."

"..."

"...Right."

Lucien rubbed his forehead.

"Sorry. I keep forgetting that."

"So do I."

Rin took a deep breath.

"The story followed Kaelith."

Three pairs of eyes immediately turned toward the Demon General. Kaelith remained perfectly still.

"...Me."

"Yeah."

"You were..."

Rin smiled awkwardly.

"...The protagonist."

Silence.

"..."

"...WHAT?!"

That shout came from Vorak.

"You?"

He looked delighted.

"I always knew you were dramatic enough!"

Kaelith pinched the bridge of his nose.

"I am not dramatic."

Rin, Lucien, Elder Veyron, and Vorak all looked at him.

Simultaneously.

"..."

"..."

"..."

Kaelith sighed.

"...Continue."

Rin nodded.

"You were called..."

He frowned slightly, trying to remember.

"'The Crimson Calamity.'"

Kaelith's expression didn't change.

"...Accurate."

"You destroyed kingdoms."

"Also accurate."

"You fought alone."

"..."

"You trusted no one."

"..."

"You..."

Rin's voice became quieter.

"...Ended the world."

The words echoed through the tent. Nobody moved. Kaelith looked at Rin.

"...Explain."

"You weren't evil."

"What?"

"You..."

Rin remembered the ending that had haunted him before his death.

"...You were broken. The Holy Kingdom killed someone important to you."

Lucien immediately stiffened.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"You never found out?"

"The story hadn't revealed it yet."

Kaelith remained silent. But something flickered in his golden eyes. Lucien slowly leaned back.

"...So according to this story...I become your enemy."

"You already are."

"...Fair enough."

"But..."

Lucien looked genuinely troubled.

"...I help destroy the world?"

Rin quickly shook his head.

"No. You tried to stop him."

"And failed?"

"..."

Rin nodded.

Nobody noticed... But outside the tent... Someone was listening. Hidden beneath an illusion spell.

A figure dressed entirely in black stood silently beyond the canvas walls.

Every word. Every revelation. They heard all of it. A slow smile spread beneath the hood.

"...Interesting. So the protagonist remembers."

The figure quietly disappeared.

Inside the tent... Elder Veyron spread a large map across the table.

"We now possess two problems."

He pointed at Kaelith.

"The future."

Then at the western mountains.

"The present. The monsters."

Lucien nodded.

"And perhaps..."

He looked at Rin.

"...they are connected."

Rin's brain immediately started working. Like debugging code.

Information. Patterns. Missing variables.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

"The System said..."

He frowned.

"'The original story has started to change.'"

"What if..."

His eyes widened.

"...What if it isn't changing?"

"What?"

"What if..."

He pointed at the map.

"...Someone is rewriting it."

Silence. The idea settled over the room.

Heavy. Impossible. Yet...

None of them could dismiss it. The flap of the tent opened again. Selara entered quickly.

"General."

"What is it?"

She looked unusually shaken.

"We captured one."

Kaelith frowned.

"One what?"

"...One of the monsters."

Ten minutes later... The entire group descended into the fortress prison. The deeper they walked...

The colder the air became. Chains rattled. Magic barriers shimmered across thick iron doors.

Finally... They stopped.

Rin looked through the bars.

"..."

"..."

"...That's not a monster."

Inside the cell sat... A young man. Maybe twenty years old. Messy black hair. Brown eyes. Simple clothes. He looked...

Human. Very human.

The prisoner looked up. The moment his eyes landed on Rin—

He froze.

"..."

"..."

"...No way."

Rin frowned.

"...Do I know you?"

The stranger slowly stood.

"You..."

His voice trembled.

"...You're speaking Korean."

Rin's heart stopped.

"..."

"...What?"

The prison cell became deathly silent.

The stranger laughed. A broken laugh. Half relief. Half disbelief.

"Oh..."

He covered his eyes.

"Thank God. There really is another one."

Rin slowly walked toward the bars. His hands were shaking.

"You..."

He switched languages instinctively.

"...You're from Earth?"

The stranger answered in fluent Korean.

"Seoul."

Rin forgot how to breathe.

"...I'm from Busan."

For several seconds... Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them cared that everyone else in the corridor couldn't understand a single word.

The stranger smiled weakly.

"I thought..."

He laughed again.

"I thought I was the only one."

Behind Rin... Kaelith stepped forward.

"What is he saying?"

Rin didn't answer immediately. His mind was racing. Too many questions. Too many possibilities.

Finally... He turned around. Slowly.

"He..."

His voice barely came out.

"...He's from my world."

Complete silence. The stranger looked at Kaelith. Then at Lucien. Then Vorak.

"..."

"...Wait."

He switched back to the common language.

"...You're..."

His eyes landed on Kaelith.

Recognition exploded across his face.

"...The Demon General."

Kaelith remained expressionless.

"I am."

The stranger's face became deathly pale.

He took three hurried steps backward.

"No... No, no, no..."

His breathing became ragged.

"You..."

He pointed at Kaelith with a trembling hand.

"...You're supposed to be dead."

Every person in the prison froze. Rin felt ice spread through his veins.

"..."

"...What?"

The stranger looked between Rin...

And Kaelith... Then whispered the words that shattered everything Rin thought he knew.

"...This isn't the first timeline."

The torches lining the prison corridor flickered violently.

Somewhere...

Far above the fortress...

Thunder rolled across a sky that had been perfectly clear only moments before.

And for the second time since arriving in this world...

Rin realized... He understood absolutely nothing.
