Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: What Are You, Really?

The street did not return to normal, not immediately. Even after the sky sealed itself and the fracture disappeared as if it had never existed, the weight of what had just happened lingered in the air. People stood frozen where they were, some staring at the empty space where the entity had been, others looking toward Suho as if trying to confirm that what they had witnessed was real. No one spoke. No one moved. The world had paused, caught between disbelief and fear, struggling to process something that did not fit into the rules they understood.

Suho remained where he stood, his posture steady but his breathing slightly heavier than before. The energy that had surged through him during the fight had not fully settled, faint traces of it still clinging to the space around him like invisible pressure. He could feel the system stabilizing again, reasserting its control over the environment, but it was slower this time, less confident. That alone told him everything he needed to know. Whatever had just happened had pushed the system further than it was meant to go.

Behind him, Sera hadn't moved. Her hand still rested near her bow, but her grip had loosened, her focus no longer on combat. Instead, her eyes were locked onto Suho, searching, questioning, trying to reconcile the person she thought she knew with the one she had just seen. The gap between those two versions had widened beyond what she could ignore, and this time, there was no dungeon, no danger, no distraction to pull her attention away from it.

"…Suho."

Her voice broke through the silence, quieter than before but far more grounded. It wasn't uncertainty anymore. It was resolve.

He didn't turn immediately. For a brief moment, he simply stood there, as if deciding whether or not to respond. Then, slowly, he shifted, his gaze meeting hers without the usual detachment he carried. There was something different now, something that hadn't been there before. Not vulnerability, not quite, but awareness. He knew this moment couldn't be avoided.

"What are you?" she asked.

The question wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It carried enough weight on its own.

Suho didn't answer right away. Not because he didn't have one, but because none of the answers he could give would be enough. Not for her. Not for anyone. The truth wasn't something that could be explained in simple terms, not without consequences that reached far beyond just the two of them.

"A hunter," he said finally.

Sera's expression didn't change.

"No," she replied, her tone steady. "Don't do that again."

There was no frustration in her voice this time, no anger. Just certainty.

"I've seen hunters," she continued, taking a step closer. "I've fought with them, trained with them, watched them grow stronger, awaken new abilities, push past their limits." She paused briefly, her eyes narrowing slightly. "But what you did… that wasn't growth. That wasn't power."

Another step.

"That was control."

The word settled between them, sharp and undeniable.

"Over everything."

Suho held her gaze, saying nothing.

Because denying it now—

Would be pointless.

Sera exhaled slowly, her shoulders rising and falling as she steadied herself. This wasn't easy for her. He could see that. The way she stood, the way her voice held firm despite the uncertainty beneath it. She wasn't asking out of curiosity. She needed to understand.

"…Were you ever actually a C-Rank?" she asked.

That question—

Hit differently.

Suho looked away briefly, his gaze drifting toward the space where the rift had been. The memory of the entity, the way it had moved, the way it had responded to him—it all lingered in his mind, overlapping with something older, something buried deeper.

"…Right now," he said, "I am."

Sera frowned.

"That's not what I asked."

"I know."

Silence stretched between them again, but this time it wasn't empty. It was filled with everything that hadn't been said, everything that couldn't be said. Sera watched him carefully, waiting, giving him the chance to explain, to offer something more than vague answers and half-truths.

He didn't.

"…So that's it," she said after a moment. "You're just going to keep everything to yourself."

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

Sera let out a quiet breath, shaking her head slightly. For a second, it looked like she might walk away, like she might decide that whatever this was, it wasn't worth the uncertainty, the risk, the distance he insisted on maintaining.

But she didn't.

Instead, she stepped closer.

Close enough that the space between them disappeared completely.

"Then listen carefully," she said, her voice lowering slightly, not out of fear, but focus. "I don't care what you are."

Suho's eyes shifted back to hers.

"I don't care if you're hiding something dangerous, or if what you did today puts a target on your back," she continued. "Because the moment that thing came out of the rift, I was already involved."

Her words were steady, unwavering.

"You told me before that you don't trust anyone," she added. "That's fine. That's your choice."

A brief pause.

"But don't think that means I'll just stand by and pretend I didn't see anything."

Suho studied her quietly.

"…Why?" he asked.

It was a simple question.

But not an easy one.

Sera didn't answer immediately. For a moment, her expression softened, just slightly, the sharp edge of confrontation easing into something more honest.

"Because you saved me," she said.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

"And because," she continued, her voice quieter now, "whatever you're dealing with… it's not something you should handle alone."

The words lingered.

Not heavy.

But real.

Suho looked at her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. This wasn't the first time someone had offered something like this, some form of trust, of support. But it was the first time it felt… different. Not forced. Not naive. Just a choice made with full awareness of the risks involved.

"…You don't understand what you're stepping into," he said.

Sera nodded slightly.

"I don't," she admitted.

Then she met his gaze again.

"But I will."

That—

Was her answer.

Clear.

Unshaken.

Suho exhaled quietly, the tension in his shoulders easing just enough to signal a shift, however small. He didn't agree. He didn't accept her words fully. But he didn't reject them either.

And for now—

That was enough.

Around them, the world slowly began to move again. Hunters started talking, voices rising as confusion turned into speculation. Some pointed toward where the rift had been, others toward Suho, their expressions uncertain, cautious. It wouldn't take long for rumors to spread, for reports to be filed, for attention to shift in their direction.

Time—

Was running out.

"…We should leave," Sera said, glancing around briefly.

Suho nodded.

They turned together, moving away from the crowd, away from the center of attention, but not fast enough to escape it entirely. Eyes followed them, questions forming, whispers beginning to spread through the gathered hunters.

Something had changed.

Everyone could feel it.

And at the center of it—

Was him.

Suho's gaze sharpened slightly as the notification appeared.

"…As expected," he thought.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Beside him, Sera walked in silence for a few seconds before speaking again.

"…That thing," she said. "It wasn't like the dungeon monsters."

"No."

"What was it?"

Suho paused briefly.

Then—

"…Something that shouldn't be here."

Sera frowned slightly.

"And it came for you."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Her grip tightened slightly at her side.

"…Then next time," she said, her voice steady once more, "we'll be ready."

Suho didn't respond.

But he didn't disagree either.

Because deep down—

He knew.

This was only the beginning.
