Chapter 90 - Chapter 90 : The Road Between

Sakura expected Lyra to disappear dramatically.

A flash of light.

A mysterious fog.

Something suitably annoying.

Instead, the girl simply walked away.

Down the ridge.

Across a path.

And eventually out of sight.

Which somehow felt even stranger.

For several minutes, Sakura remained where she was.

The valley below glowed with scattered lanterns.

The mountains stood dark against the night sky.

And Lyra's final words continued repeating in her mind.

**The clues are finished.**

Not *almost* finished.

Finished.

The difference felt important.

For years, Sakura's life had revolved around searching.

Following rumors.

Collecting fragments.

Trying to prove that Haruto existed somewhere beyond her memories.

Now someone had just told her the search was over.

The thought was unsettling.

Because if she wasn't searching anymore...

Then what was she doing?

The answer arrived slowly.

She was going to meet him.

Not today.

Not tomorrow.

But soon.

Soon enough that the possibility felt real.

And reality was far more frightening than hope.

That night she slept at a small village nestled at the foot of the mountains.

The inn was modest.

The food was average.

The bed was surprisingly comfortable.

For the first time in years, however, Sakura barely noticed any of it.

Her thoughts kept drifting elsewhere.

Toward Haruto.

Toward the future.

Toward a reunion she had imagined so many times that it almost felt impossible.

Eventually she pulled out the sketchbook.

Not the note.

Not the portrait.

The sketchbook.

She slowly turned the pages.

Landscape after landscape.

Place after place.

Moments preserved in charcoal and ink.

It felt like reading a travel journal written in Haruto's own language.

A language made of images instead of words.

Then she reached one of the final pages.

A mountain path.

Drawn with unusual care.

The details were precise.

Intentional.

Different from the other sketches.

Sakura stared at it.

Then reached for the map.

A few moments later, she froze.

The mountain path in the drawing matched the route ahead.

Not approximately.

Exactly.

A realization struck her.

Haruto hadn't drawn this after traveling through it.

He had drawn it before arriving.

Planning.

Preparing.

Following information.

Just like her.

For a long time, Sakura sat silently.

Then she laughed.

A quiet laugh.

Because after all these years, they were still doing the same thing.

Without realizing it.

Across the continent.

Across separate lives.

Still somehow moving in sync.

The next morning she left before sunrise.

The road climbed steadily into the mountains.

The desert slowly vanished behind her.

The air became cooler.

The landscape greener.

Streams appeared.

Forests returned.

Life returned.

It felt like entering a different world.

Several travelers passed her throughout the day.

A merchant caravan.

A group of pilgrims.

A shepherd guiding goats along a narrow trail.

For once, Sakura didn't stop any of them.

Didn't ask about artists.

Didn't ask about sketchbooks.

Didn't ask about strangers.

She simply kept walking.

Forward.

The road curved around a cliffside late in the afternoon.

And there, carved into the stone beside the path, she found something familiar.

A tiny drawing.

Easy to miss.

A small bird.

The exact same bird Haruto used to doodle whenever he was bored.

Sakura smiled.

Then kept walking.

She didn't stop to investigate.

Didn't search the area.

Didn't turn it into another clue.

Because Lyra had been right.

The clues were finished.

This wasn't a breadcrumb.

It was a greeting.

A sign left by someone moving in the same direction.

A simple message saying:

*You're on the right road.*

The realization warmed her chest.

The mountains stretched endlessly ahead.

Yet for the first time, the distance didn't feel overwhelming.

Because she could feel the story changing.

The chase was ending.

The reunion was beginning.

And somewhere beyond the peaks ahead—

another traveler was walking toward the same horizon.
