Sakura sat beside a campfire.
The flames crackled softly.
Above her, the night sky stretched endlessly across the mountains.
The stars felt closer here.
Brighter.
As though the heavens itself had risen just to meet them.
Nearby, a handful of travelers slept beneath wagons and tents.
The road had grown busier during the past week.
More pilgrims.
More scholars.
More people heading toward the eastern mountains.
Toward the Sky Vault.
She still wasn't entirely sure why so many people traveled there.
Only that every road seemed to point toward it.
The fire shifted.
A shower of sparks drifted upward.
For a moment, Sakura simply watched them.
Quiet.
Thinking.
The journey had become strange lately.
Not harder.
The opposite.
Lighter.
The clues had stopped.
The desperate searching had stopped.
The constant uncertainty had stopped.
Instead, a different feeling had taken their place.
Expectation.
Not hope.
Expectation.
Like standing outside a door you knew was about to open.
The feeling was terrifying.
And wonderful.
The necklace around her neck moved slightly in the wind.
The empty pendant given to her by the Archivist rested against her chest.
She touched it absentmindedly.
A habit she'd developed unconsciously.
Then smiled.
Because another memory surfaced.
A ridiculous one.
A completely ordinary one.
---
Years ago,a couple days before their wedding. It was winter so they both were wearing jackets and cuddling with each other.
But..
Sakura had spent nearly thirty minutes searching the apartment.
Closets.
Shelves.
Drawers.
Under cushions.
Behind books.
Everywhere.
Haruto had eventually found her kneeling beside the couch.
Looking increasingly frustrated.
"What are you searching for?"
"My necklace."
"The silver one?"
"Yes."
Haruto frowned.
"You were wearing it this morning."
"I know."
"You checked your room?"
"Three times."
"The kitchen?"
"Twice."
"The bookshelf?"
"Why would it be in the bookshelf?"
A pause.
Then:
"...fair point."
Thirty minutes later they still hadn't found it.
One hour later they still hadn't found it.
Eventually Haruto began helping.
The search expanded.
The apartment suffered.
By evening it looked like a small tornado had visited.
Neither of them found the necklace.
Defeat seemed inevitable.
Then Sakura stood up.
Crossed the room.
And accidentally walked past a mirror.
Silence.
Haruto looked at the reflection.
Then at Sakura.
Then back at the reflection.
The necklace hung around her neck.
Exactly where it had always been.
Sakura froze.
Haruto froze.
The universe froze.
A full ten seconds passed.
Then Sakura covered her face with both hands.
"I want to move."
Haruto laughed so hard he nearly collapsed.
She didn't speak to him for the rest of the evening.
Mostly because every time she tried, he started laughing again.
---
The campfire crackling woke her up.
Sakura found herself smiling.
Not sadly.
Not painfully.
Just smiling.
Because the memory wasn't special.
There had been no grand declaration.
No life-changing moment.
Just two idiots looking for a necklace that had never been lost.
Yet somehow that ordinary afternoon remained perfectly preserved.
The realization warmed her chest.
For years she'd worried that time would steal those moments.
That distance would blur them.
That another world would eventually wash them away.
But it hadn't.
She still remembered.
Every ridiculous detail.
Every laugh.
Every smile.
Every tiny piece of the life they'd shared.
A voice interrupted her thoughts.
"You're smiling."
Sakura looked up.
A middle-aged bearded man traveler sat across the fire.
She hadn't noticed him arrive.
The man pointed toward her.
"That's the smile of somebody remembering someone."
Sakura groaned.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Painfully."
Wonderful.
Another one.
The mountains seemed filled with wise old people.
She suspected they reproduced through philosophy.
The traveler chuckled.
Then stared at the fire.
"I have a family at home."
He paused a bit.
"You?"
Sakura followed his gaze.
The flames danced gently.
A thousand answers came to mind.
Husband.
Friend.
Artist.
Partner.
Home.
Eventually she settled on the simplest.
"Yes."
The old man nodded.
No further questions.
No advice.
Just understanding.
For a while they sat in silence.
Watching the fire.
Watching the stars.
Sharing the comfortable quiet that only strangers could sometimes create.
Eventually the traveler spoke again.
Without looking at her.
"You know..."
The flames reflected in his eyes.
"The moon is funny."
Sakura blinked.
That wasn't where she expected the conversation to go.
The old man pointed upward.
The moon hung above the mountains.
Bright.
Beautiful.
Distant.
"No matter how far apart people are..."
He smiled.
"...they still end up looking at the same one."
Silence.
The words settled gently inside her.
Simple.
Ordinary.
Yet somehow perfect.
Sakura looked up.
Toward the moon.
Toward the sky.
Toward a horizon stretching far beyond her sight.
And for the first time—
she stopped wondering where Haruto was.
Because the answer no longer mattered.
Not tonight.
Tonight, it was enough to know they shared the same sky.
The same stars.
The same moon.
And for reasons neither could explain—
both found themselves smiling.
