Chapter 1 - The Wedding Night She Wasn't Supposed to Have

The needle slid into Lina's vein with a precision that didn't belong to any hospital.

She felt the cold metal first then the fire. Her last memory was the screech of tires, the taste of blood on her tongue, and the blurry faces of students who'd watched her die without lifting a finger. But this wasn't heaven. This wasn't hell. This was a silk-draped bed in a penthouse that overlooked a city she'd only ever seen through bus windows.

And the man standing at the foot of her bed, loosening his tie with long, elegant fingers?

Ethan Hwang.

Her tormentor. Her high school nightmare. The boy who'd laughed when they poured glue into her locker, who'd watched as they carved "loser" into her desk, who'd once said to her face: "Someone like you? You'll never matter."

Now he was her husband.

The Charm System flickered to life in her vision a translucent gold interface only she could see.

She sat up slowly, her reflection catching in the floor-to-ceiling windows. This wasn't her face. High cheekbones. Full lips the color of crushed berries. Hair that fell in dark waves past her waist. The body of a woman who'd never been hungry, never been invisible, never been nothing.

Ethan's wife the real one had died three days ago in a "tragic accident." And Lina had been pulled from the ashes of her own death to wear this skin like a second chance.

Or a weapon.

"You're quiet," Ethan said, his voice a low rasp that didn't match the coldness in his eyes. He dropped the tie onto a nearby chair. "Most brides cry on their wedding night. You look like you're plotting murder."

Lina met his gaze. In her past life, she would have flinched. Would have looked down, made herself small, apologized for existing.

Not anymore.

"Maybe I am," she said softly.

Something flickered across his face surprise, then amusement, then a razor-thin smile that didn't reach his eyes. He walked toward her, each step deliberate, and stopped when his knees hit the edge of the mattress. Up close, he was devastating. Sharp jaw. Dark eyes that held secrets like locked vaults. The kind of handsome that made people dangerous because they knew exactly what they could get away with.

"Let me make something clear," he said, tilting her chin up with one finger. His touch was cold. "This marriage is a transaction. Your family's money saved my company. My name saves your family's reputation. There will be no love. No loyalty. And certainly no happy ending."

Lina didn't pull away. She let him touch her, let him think he was in control, and memorized every micro-expression on his face.

In her past life, he'd watched her suffer and done nothing.

Now he would watch her rise and beg to be part of it.

"I understand perfectly," she said, and the Charm System pinged.

Her blood went cold. He could read her mind? For three days?

As if sensing her sudden tension, Ethan tilted his head. "What are you thinking right now, Mrs. Hwang?"

She smiled the first real smile this new face had worn. Sweet. Empty. Perfect.

"I was thinking," she said, "that the view from up here is incredible."

He studied her for a long moment. Then he laughed, low and humorless, and released her chin.

"Get some sleep," he said, turning toward the door. "Tomorrow, you meet the board. Try not to embarrass me."

The door clicked shut behind him.

Lina waited ten seconds. Twenty. Then she pressed her palms to the silk sheets and let out a breath she'd been holding for two lifetimes.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

72-hour countdown begins now.

Current Charm Level: 5/100

Hidden Mission Discovered: Uncover the truth behind the original Lina Hwang's death.

Reward: Unknown.

She pulled her knees to her chest and stared at the city lights a galaxy of wealth and power that had once been a distant, glittering dream. Now it was her chessboard.

But if Ethan could read her thoughts, she had to move carefully. Had to build walls inside her own mind. Had to play the obedient wife while searching for the cracks in his armor.

And there was one more thing.

The system had called this body the "original Lina Hwang." Not a random stranger. Not a coincidence. Someone had killed the woman whose face she now wore and Lina had been dropped into her life like a seed into bloody soil.

Why?

She reached for her phone on the nightstand a sleek, unfamiliar device and nearly dropped it when she saw the lock screen.

A photo of Ethan and his "late" wife at their engagement gala. Both of them smiling. Both of them happy.

But Lina had watched Ethan Hwang for four years in high school. She knew his real smile rare, crooked, usually aimed at someone he was about to destroy.

This smile in the photo wasn't real either.

And neither, she suspected, was the accident that had killed the original Lina.

Lina's thumb hovered over [YES].

Outside, the city hummed with the quiet violence of the rich. Inside, a dead girl's phone buzzed with a single text message from an unknown number:

"She wasn't supposed to wake up."
