I gained a lot more strength after eating that morning.
The food had helped. It turned out I had just been weak and starving. Nothing so severe, and thankfully nothing to do with that force inside me.
My limbs no longer felt like they belonged to someone else, and the fog that had wrapped around my thoughts had thinned enough for me to think clearly again.
Becca and Edna moved around the room with the stiff efficiency of servants who desperately wanted to be somewhere else. Edna flinched whenever I looked at her directly. She also spoke in short, clipped sentences.
"Should I get you more food?"
"I have prepared a few options for you to choose from."
"Your bath water is ready."
"Do you need anything else?"
She said nothing beyond what duty required.
Becca said nothing at all.
