I did not expect an apology.
Especially one that sounded so genuine it caught me off guard.
For a moment, I wasn't sure what to even do with it.
Maybelle stepped back from me and moved toward a chair near the corner of the room where the dome nearly bled into the wall. She lowered herself into it.
"Please." She gestured to the bed. "I believe you should still get some rest. Or I could bring another chair for you to sit in, if you prefer." She tilted her head toward the shimmering dome that nearly engulfed the whole chamber. "The barrier is here to protect you from Paloma. Or at least shield you."
I felt a wave of discomfort at the mention of that name, and the memory of those pink eyes pressed against the edges of my mind. I did not like how she had looked at me, but even that fear seemed oddly distant now. Muffled beneath the weight of everything else.
"Do you even know what she wants?" I quietly asked.
