We climbed the steps to the raised platform where the thrones sat, the massive seats looming beside us.
The door led to a narrow stairwell that spiralled upward. Our footsteps echoed against the stone as we climbed, and I noticed that no one else followed us.
The stairs were not long, but by the time we reached the top, the throne room felt very far away.
A single short corridor stretched before us, ending in a wide arched doorway. The old woman led us through it, and I stepped into a beautiful chamber that made me stop in my tracks.
It was startlingly bright. Moonlight filtered in through a window that fully encompassed the wall in front of us. Or rather, what should have been a wall was a glass pane that offered an unobstructed view of the world below.
The castle spread out in all directions, its towers and walls rendered small by our height. Beyond the castle walls, I could see the faint glow of the capital in the distance.
